Crobot

Pennsylvania groovy hard rockers Crobot have announced a new single and an arena tour with Volbeat and Anthrax.

The new single off 2014’s debut record Something Supernatural is called “Full Moon Howl.”  Listening to this cut… I get a little bit of a desert boogy metal vibe. Think Fu Manchu or Corrosion of Conformity. The lead singer can start wailing like the dude in Wolfmother.

Staring near the end of April, Crobot will be in arenas with Volbeat and Anthrax. April 29th they’ll be at the WaMu Theatre in Seattle.

[New Rock Now] Former CFOX seeds winners Pigeon Park

2013 CFOX Seeds winner Pigeon Park have been working on new music with producer GGGarth Richardson. The song is the first listen off their ep Stripes. Look for it on June 16th.

The song is a tightly produced, high sheen rock anthem. With a guitar solo? Here we go rock & roll!

Tell your friends about their Canadian tour.  I sees no Vancouver show. Sad taco emoticon.

the_carlines

Tonight, Victoria’s Carlines made the trip to Vancouver to play a show at The Roxy on Granville.  It was all part of some sort of Nimbus Recording contest. Sjoerd tried to explain it to me, but it was loud in the club.

Not a bad crowd. Didn’t seem like all music fans which maybe is a good thing for a touring band trying to make new friends. Lots of party people out on a beautiful April evening in Vancouver.  The DJ that fired up after Carlines played wedding jammers. But the party people seemed to get down on it. I wish people at actual weddings partied that hard to wedding classics. I should drop a resume off at The Roxy…I’m a pretty good wedding DJ!

The Carlines sounded amazing (as they do). Sjoerd and the boys flip between acoustic down-tempo, folk inspired tunes about napping by the lake and plugged in, electric foot stompers. Their single “Heart” set them apart.

The band before them was this group from the Tri-Cities in Washington State. Night Argent.

Good haircuts, V-neck t-shirts, smoke machines, and a deep appreciation for Imagine Dragon‘s Night Visions highlighted their set. Big sounds. The bass player produced this sinister wuuuuuuuuu wuuuuuuuuu waaaaaahhhhhhh wuuuuuuuuu sound. The band projected and controlled the space.

I missed GOODWOODATOMS….but Sjoerd assured me they were the group of the night.  Stupid Jets game delayed me at Romers. He said, “Do you like Local Natives? You’ll like these guys.”

Yeah they are good. Like really good.

The first band up tonight was called Lovecoast. I only had the chance to check them out briefly before I ran off to eat a burger and watch some puck. Bright, jangly guitars, uplifting female vocals.

Good night at The Roxy on Granville. Fun folks out to dance and enjoy a couple Vancouver bands and couple touring groups from Victoria and Washington State.

As for Romers in Yaletown…well Yaletown ain’t my scene, but that Port-braised onion and Stilton burger,…jeezus. I’ll dream about it tonight.

Canucks win Friday night and Jets in 6.

Blitzen Trapper have released a song off their upcoming record, Live Harvest. The album is destined for Record Store Day on April 18th. Live Harvest is a cover record where the band preforms Neil Young’s Harvest, front-to-back.

The record was recorded live at Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge.

“I think we all knew the record before we even tried to play it,” says frontman Eric Earley. “It’s one of those records that takes us to that place of comfort and nostalgia like the Dukes of Hazzard or a Chevy Impala.  It just feels good to play it.”

If you’re a fan of Neil Young, Blitzen Trapper, or cover songs in general…have a listen on Stereogum.

Hawk and Steel

Victoria’s Hawk and Steel released their new single “David and Katie.” The song is from their upcoming record Anywhere But Here which comes out on June 23rd. The song tells the morose alt-country fable of…. David and Katie. neat.

It is the studio cut from a song we first heard close to a year ago when I was on The Zone.

And if I may share a clip from my radio show on CFOX in Vancouver…this is a call I got the other day from Jose. Jose survived an insane motorcycle accident.

Twisted fingers and happy hearts… Mike Edel released a new song on his soundcloud the other day called “Blue Above The Green.” He says the song is about spring time.

Mike Edel’s new record is called India, Seattle. The Victoria folkster is hitting the road with fellow Island squad Towers & Trees. We’ll get a chance to see Mike Edel on April 9th in Vancouver at The Biltmore and the following nights in Victoria at The Roxy.

And let’s check in with Towers and Trees. Check out this beauty cover of Lana Del Rey’s “West Coast” recorded on The Zone with my best English mate Jon Williams.

April 9th? Is that a Thursday? Maybe I could go to that?
