Busy weekend in the Garden City. I’ll be DJing a couple weddings, but before I head off to a hotel ball room, I’ll be taking my little tribe down to Rock The Shores.

I had to work yesterday, so I missed USS which sucks. I love those guys.  Today I am amped to see Jesse Roper and The Dudes before I have to take off and DJ.

Yesterday I had to work. During my show I talked to a writer at Pacific Standard named Ryan Jacobs…he used to be at The Atlantic. Last fall he wrote an article about Iceland and how the people there fiercely believe in elves.

Why So Many Icelanders Still Believe in Invisible Elves

Year After Year
Peter Gardner from Hawk and Steel came on my radio show yesterday to talk about his new song “Year After Year.”

I was sitting around the radio factory with DJ Boitano yesterday and he was talking about this funny break Dylan and Jason did on mammals and how long almost all of them take to urinate.

One thing led to another…and I’m in the washroom timing Boitano taking a piss.

How good was Band of Skulls on Thursday, May 29th? The British blues rockers came, saw, and conquered a sold out Sugar Nightclub in Victoria.

The set came out swinging with Himilayan giants “Asleep at the Wheel”  and the title cut from their third record. So many huge anthems and high energy sizzlers off the hop.  The settled in about two-thirds of the way before ultimately climaxing with modern rock radio banger “Hoochie Coochie.”

They came back out with an encore of “Sweet Sour,” “Light of the Morning,” and “Death By Diamonds and Pearls.” Massive.

20140529 - Band of Skulls (Civic)

Before the show, Dylan Willows picked up the band in The Zone’s Summer Civic and had cameras rolling (video coming soon) for a casual Q &A before handing them off to me back at the radio factory. Band of Skulls performed a could songs live on the radio.

Please note the picture of Russell and I being best friends.

Triple Word Score
Feels like a life time ago… back in the old CiTR days, the Morning After Show used to come on after a show called The Shit Mix hosted by a dude named Jamaal. Me and Jamaal got along all right and I looked up to him….generally because he was a pretty groovy Vancouverite. Always wore great pants.  We were both in bands and his band was called Triple Word Score.  They played a bratty style of punk which was popular at the time and they managed to get themselves signed to Long Beach Records!

We used to play shows together when we could sort it out.  Here is a radio spot I made to promote one of our shows.  I think this is for a March 2001 concert.

What do you thrash?  What do you got?

Starting to get the summer vibe on Vancouver Island.  The weekend was a huge one. It felt like the whole city was sitting on a patio, out on the trails, or riding a bike.

My weekend began at the USS show. The band performed a high school concert out at Stelly’s during their nooner and then they performed a 19+ show at Club 9one9.  The radio station tapped me to DJ the opening set which was a lot of fun.

Ash and Jason were exceptionally generous with their time and made sure that anyone looking for a picture or autograph were given an opportunity.  Both shows were packed rooms of passionate fans. If you have stumbled on this blog from outside of Canada and are wondering what’s up… USS are a Canadian group form Toronto.  They have at least a half-dozen modern rock singles that have been played radio across Canada for a few years now.  Man, when they launched into “Yin Yang” or “This Is The Best” the party went sub-atomic. Have a look at the pictures!

This exceptional weather calls for some bright summer music.  Lindsay is a record promoter from New York, and she sent over some fun nu-disco and house tunes.

Time to hit play on some radio hits that are resonating on modern rock radio in the USA but not so much north of the 49th parallel (or in my case, just south of the 49th… what are we, the 48th?).

Let’s start with a group called Wild Cub and their song “Thunder Clatter.”  The band is from Nashville, signed to Mom + Pop, and their record is called Youth.

***

Next up… the dark pop/soul of Somekindawonderful.  Band is originally from Cleveland but now centered out of Los Angeles. Getting played on the radio all over the place.

***

Off to New Jersey, band is called Brick + Mortar.  The song getting featured on the radio is called “Locked in a Cage.”

My favourite record of 2014 (so far) is Cloud NothingsHere and Nowhere Else.  I played it for my 6-year-old daughter Madelyn…and she was not into it as much.

Maybe you are feeling the same way about the new Cloud Nothings.  I know I don’t.  I AM a big fan.

I had a chance to chat with Bear Hands lead singer Dylan Rau.  We yapped about the band’s punk rock origins in Connecticut and New York City before trying to get to the bottom of the Much Mega Hit, “Giants.”

I heard it on the radio

tummy time
A collection of sounds I created or heard on the radio this past week.

We’ll start with my wife asking me to buy her flowers some time.  Seems simple enough, but I over think it… luckily there was a Zoner out there to set me strait using the mumbo jumbo of the 5 Love Languages.

Dylan and Jason from The Zone Morning Show were talking about shark attacks.  Dylan said, “sharks, older than trees.”  And went, “SWAAAAAAA?” Turns out he is on to something. I was able to track down a marine biologist at the University of Victoria with a specialty in sharks to explain.

Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters fame is forming up a new group, The Birds of Satan.  Jon Williams talks about it on The Zone Evening Show.

Finally, out of Edmonton… Ryder had a pretty huge April Fools prank. The Hot 107 morning show host told the fine people of Alberta that the Province of Saskatchewan had bought the Alberta town of Fort Saskatchewan.

I was thinking about more recent “one-hit-wonders” the other day. Some songs we used to play on The Zone all the time, but you don’t hear so much. It began when I was dreaming about the 2009 college party jammer “I Love College” by Asher Roth.  That song  was never a major hit on alternative radio. We spun it very occasionally 5 years ago.

I started exploring other cuts from 2009 and ended up trolling all Alternative charts from 2009 and back into 2008 and hit about Carolina Liar.  The American/Swedish group put out their debut record, Coming to Terms,  in May 2008. The record featured the song “I’m Not Over” which peaked out at #3 on the Billboard Alt. chart.

The band’s website appears to be in hibernation…but checking out lead singer Chad Wolf‘s twitter hints at some new recordings.

John Lenac of the internet says, “I still have “I’m Not Over” in Power Recurrent.”  Power Recurrent?  Good words.
