They hype is strong for the Cape Cod, Massachusetts trio Highly Suspect.

The rockers 2016 record, The Boy Who Died Wolf, continues to pile on the acclaim and their #NewRockNow’d song “My Name Is Human” is up for a Grammy.

The band is touring in the spring, but nothing in Canada (yet).

lost-kings

The workers at Match Pub in New West turn me onto new music all the time.

One of the servers, Irene, has been requesting the LA production duo Lost Kings. She loves the song “Phone Down.”

They posted a new song the other day…I’ll need to add it to rotation as well.

The new one is called “Quit You” and features Tinashe. The song is a modern pop jam that throws back on some vintage 80s sounds.

And here’s a sea of “Phone Down” remixes.

blame

Bastille‘s new single “Blame” fro the record Wild World has racked up the most new spins this week on US alternative radio.

***

I added Spoon’s “Hot Thoughts” to my Alternative to What? playlist. Coral and I jammed this on the freeway down to Seattle this week. The song came out of relative nowhere on US radio, and is the 9th most active jam climbing.

mona-the-band

My wife and I took a little trip to Seattle this week to see Toronto rockers July Talk. The band played Tuesday at a place called the Sunset Tavern.

The Ballard neighbourhood of Seattle is a hip place. Lots of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, record stores and all those little places you’d expect in a groovy part of town.

We wandered up to the sold out show to see the last couple songs of Toronto band Little Junior.

The next group up was Nashville’s Mona. The group was new to us, but there were quite a few people in the Seattle crowd to see them. They really impressed Coral and I. Maybe a cross between Kings of Leon and Gaslight Anthem (though after listening to ep on the drive back to Vancouver, we heard less Gaslight on the recorded EP).

Big rock & roll sound. The music really punched through in the small club.

Nothing like going to a show and coming home with a new favourite.

callme-grant

Direct from Ruth in Minnesota… she sent over Grant‘s remix of San Holo’s red hot jammer “Lights.”

Grant says this about the art of the remix: “I don’t believe remixes are meant to be seen as better or worse than each other, or the original. I really think remixes are just one artist’s interpretation of another artist’s piece of work. For me this felt just like writing an original piece of music, but with an already amazing vocal and hook melody. Creating a song means pouring a bit of yourself into a shareable entity. Interpreting and sharing what the piece of art says to you, well, that’s a remix.

This is my first remix in years, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Huge thank you to bitbird and SAN HOLO for letting me re-imagine this beautiful song!

German producer and friend-of-the-blog Koni has had tremendous success remixing and covering some of the biggest chart poppers. The dude has amassed millions of spins of his songs and feels now is the time to put it on the line with his first original house song.

The song leans on his signature style. Tropical tinged deep house.

After all those remixes this is kind of special for me as it is my first original track called ‘Mad About You’ and it is featuring singer/songwriter Danelle.”

ty-segall

Ty Segall’s self-titled record is coming out on the same days as Japandroids AND Cloud Nothings. Neat. Here’s a fuzzy ripper called “Break A Guitar.”

Cloud Nothings are the best.  Life Without Sound is out…also on the 27th. They perform at The Biltmore in Vancouver on February 16th (I got me tickets!) and they shared another song.

Arcade Fire have shared their first new recording since 2013’s Reflektor.

The song is called “I Give You Power” and features Mavis Staples.

It has been reported that the Arcade Fire have wrapped up the recording of a new record that is expected sometime this year. What is not known is if this song will be part of that album.

Proceeds from the song will be going to the American Civil Liberties Union.  Punch it up below.

David Lawson is the recent highschool grad that brands electronic beats as WRLD.

The Dutch producer’s new song went live today. The song is called is “Hideaway” and features Savoi.

“We managed to completely transform what I had into a whole new song with that retro 80s sound to create “Hideaway”…”

I did it! Signed up for the charity boxing event, Beer Wars 2…. this time, it’s personal.

mahalo

LA producer/DJ Mahalo gives us an atmospheric deep house spin of ZHU‘s “in The Morning.”

“Music is Faceless.

Let my music tell my story.” – alright, ZHU…let’s go.

I’ll need to add this jammer to my set at Match. Deep House isn’t for everyone, but on the slower nights, the workers seem to like the beats.

phonograph

Portuguese Youtube music channel Phonograph crafted a mixtape this week inspired by some songs they discovered on The Morning After music blog.  Have a listen!

Thanks guys! That was fun.
