OK…so what if New York City band Mainland stole one of my band names, I’m not bitter, I’ll still post their delightful breakup post-punky anthem.

From FADER: “There are a lot of people out there who will try to drag you down,” Topf explained in an email to The FADER. “‘Not As Cool As Me’ is about dating someone who treats you like dirt, and reflecting on all the reasons why you’re better off without them. I once had a relationship with a girl who was a mess and thought she controlled my life, this song is the sound of the door slamming behind me.”

Flintstones

Yesterday on the radio show…we yapped about that old roadside attraction/theme park on the #1 outside Chilliwack called Flintstones Bedrock City. Remember that place?

Huh.

Is that what the world needs? Father John Misty covering Ryan Adams’ cover of Taylor Swift…in the style of the Velvet Underground. Jeezus.

More from Consequence of Sound.

Skylar
My man Drex over at CKNW was telling me that Skylar Spence is coming to Fortune Sound Club on October 14th and that we should go. His record Prom King came out last week on Carpark Records.

Chill…I like that.

Happy Mondays! Go with yourself.

Toronto’s Young Empires performed last night in Vancouver at Fortune Sound Club. Today they stopped by CFOX on their way to the ferry to take part in the Rifflandia Festival in Victoria. I asked Matt about their song “Uncover Your Eyes.”

On the way out…they bumped into Tokyo Police Club…also in CFOX before their show tonight at The Imperial and then off to Rifflandia.

gryffin

I love Josef Salvat and this big, bright, house remix from Gryffin of his stellar song “Open Season” sounds good.

“I’m extremely excited to present my official remix of Josef Salvat’s “Open Season.” For this one I tried to switch things up a bit with different styles and influences. I’m very happy with the end result and I hope you enjoy the song!”

On.Repeat.

One of my favourite Vancouver bands, Bear Mountain, have a new indie-electro song called “Hopeful.”

I am amped for this song for a couple reasons. Number 1, NEW BEAR MOUNTAIN. That’s a celebration. Number 2, it is Rifflandia and I will always cherish the Bear Mountain set I saw all those nights ago in packed all ages studio space at 2:30AM.

The band will be releasing their second record sometime next year on Last Gang Records.

“This band, our music, Kenji’s artwork, and everything we do is really about unifying that relationship between technology and nature, analogue and digital,” says frontman Ian Bevis. “For us, there is something really stimulating about producing music and for the most part our songs are producer-based tracks. Where things get interesting is on stage when we translate those techniques into the live setting,” adds Kyle Statham. “When we’re up there we’re always rocking things out like a band usually would but we’re also bringing in this visual language and an element of storytelling, which takes shape in real time and in front of the audience.”

“This is our new song ‘Hopeful’. We made it thinking about the future, and being hopeful for what’s to come despite the past. We hope you like it!!”

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js*** lord-huron Lord Huron has released another single off his record Strange Trails. The song has a folky, blue collar rock vibe to it. And if you make it out to see the Robert Redford movie A Walk In The Woods, you might here a few Lord Huron tracks on the soundtrack.

1989

So Ryan Adams’ song-for-song reinterpretation of Taylor Swift’s 1989 is real. And we got out first listen today from Zane Lowe on Beats 1.

And you know what? I kinda really like it!

Tomorrow I’m looking forward to visits from Tokyo Police Club and Young Empires. I’ll try to get something posted up on here before I take off to Victoria for the weekend and Rifflandia!

Incredible story out of South Africa. In 2013, a treasure trove of bones were discovered deep in a cave from a group of people who lived 3 million to 4 million years ago. The bones point to a primitive person similar to humans but also retaining some ape like qualities.

The humanoids have been labeled the Homo naledi. Homo because they are connected to modern humans in some respects (but experts point out, not a direct connection) and naledi means “star” in the local Sesotho language. The remains were discovered near Johannesburg in the Rising Star cave system.

The bones show a human like person who may have stood 5 feet tall and weighed around 100 pounds. The brains were small, not much larger than a chimpanzee. Males and females had a similar body type.

What separates this find and these people from apes is that it appears that bones come from a burial chamber. Burying the dead is generally considered a uniquely human trait. Also the chamber is exceptionally dark and wild animals generally don’t travel into the dark.

The cave was down an exceptionally narrow cavern. Six scientists could fit down there and one of those was SFU PhD student Marina Elliott! (click this link to see some awesome pictures of Elliott in action!)

Bass Drum of Death

If you like loud, fuzzy, boogy, hard rock, you should be able to slip easily into this song, “Left For Dead.”

I hope your computer speakers can go to 11… Mississippi’s Bass Drum of Death sound stellar. OK, so this record, Rip This, is a year-old…never you mind.

I first say Bass Drum of Death in 2011, when they opened for Japandroids.  That show was life affirming. Today I read they are currently on tour with one of CFOX’s favourite bands, Royal Blood.

Royal Blood will be on The Late Late Show with James Corden on September 22nd. On their fourth late night TV appearance they’ll perform the Much Mega Hit “Figure It Out.”

And I’m not sure what I think about this remix, but here we are.

Whoa…I wish that BDOD and Royal Blood tour would drift north to the Terminal City.

Buntzen

Started the day today with a hike at Buntzen. Coral and I had Jack and he’s only 20 months, so I won’t say it was an arduous hike…but we also made it to the Viewpoint and Jack walked pretty much the whole there, and the entire way back. That’s impressive. He was attacked by exactly zero cougars. I’ll call that a win.

MUSIC!

Alison Mosshart, Jack White and Company have shared another song off their September 25th record Dodge And Burn.

We’ve already heard The Dead Weather’s “I Feel Love (Every Million Miles)” and now we have this barn burner. “Cop and Go.”

Muse covered CHVRCHES. I am not going to come on here and tell you I love this cover. But it is a thing.

I wanna end with this beauty remix of Panama.

Off to Foo Fighters tonight at Rogers Arena. Coral is going to drop our daughter Madelyn off with me and we’ll check that out together. Dustin at CFOX asked if I had ear protection for her and I said, “the Foo Fighters aren’t *that* loud.”

And he said, “get ear plugs you dummy, you’ve already wrecked your ears and so NO bands are loud to you.”

huh.
