Brisbaneese (but based out of Toronto?) indie folk band Hollow Coves have a beautiful remix by filous of their song “Heatwaves” topping the pops on Hype Machine right now.
And the original to compare.
filous is on tour with RAC and will be in Vancouver on November 26th for a show at the Commodore Ballroom.
Mike Chang at VancouverTrails.com shares his top 5 favourite late summer hikes near Vancouver.
Mike says the best thing about a late summer hike….no bugs.
01) Garibaldi Lake – Check out that stunning turquoise water.
02) Wedgemont Lake – Mike says this hike is a challenge, but the temperatures are forgiving this time of year. And a glacier? C’mon!
03) Goat Mountain – First off, great name. Second, pair it with Grouse Grind and feel the burn. I think they serve beer up there somewhere too. Hey UBC, I see you!
04) St. Mark’s Summit – You’re gunna get some prime-time Howe Sound views.
05) Mount Seymour – You’ll need to hit this one before the snows. Winter is Coming.
Do you have a favourite hike in the area? Perfect for late summer and early fall? Post it in the comments…I am always looking for new places to explore when I get a day off.
Neat. But while reading about them, I came across this most excellent cover of “Sympathy For The Devil” by Lemmy & Co.
I did this radio bit many moons ago where I pretended to pee in Jon Williams’ tea mug…and with pissing in mugs being red hot in the news right now I was trying to find it. I guess the signal was lost to the noise on the FM radio all those moons ago and I didn’t save it.
But my journeys reminded me of a couple great cover songs. I LOVE this Kings of Leon cover of Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own.”
And Jesse Roper’s Stevie Ray Vaughn is also super cool.
Finally…how about Titus Andronicus’ cover of The Weeknd? Dig it!
Happy Tuesday that feels like a Monday. Also first day of school. Took my daughter to her first day of grade two. I moved back to the city I grew up in…and my kid is going to the same elementary school I went to. What a trip.
Yesterday, Matthew Good stopped by my radio program and we got to talking about his new record, Chaotic Neutral. The title comes from a character alignment in Dungeons & Dragons. When you buy a physical copy of the album, you’ll get a print of his hand drawn fantasy map for a place called Scarrow Foregate.
Matt Good’s love of cartography was inspired by medieval cartographer John Speed and also Jeffrey Beebe.
We talk Dungeons & Dragons, map cartography, medieval typography, his scrapped record, finding inspiration and the changing tastes of Matt Good, touring and his challenges, his trip up North this summer, kids, Holly McNarland singing on Chaotic Neutral, Bones from Midnight Oil playing bass, and a 20th anniversary book of all his songs’ lyrics. Buy the new record Chaotic Neutral on September 25th.
New record is called Tape Loops…and as the title suggests, a tape based recording session where he loops some tapes and what not.
“I can’t change a closed, physical tape loop with a mouse-click or a keystroke, and that’s precisely the point,” Walla explains. “Digital recording and editing often feels like working in a spreadsheet—it’s not always a place for dreams.”

Toronto’s Young Empires are so hot right now. Their debut LP, The Gates, is out on Friday and the single by the same name is popular on modern rock radio.
The band channels that electronic/indie rock vibe to create a fun and vibrant sound. Their first ep came out in 2012 and had more of a house energy, for this record they wanted to grow their sound.
“We all knew that we wanted to make a record that was more mature,” says lead vocalist Matthew Vlahovich. ”We were 25 years old when we wrote our first one, now we’re in our thirties. We’ve all grown up on a lot of levels.”
The band is heading out on tour, here are our Pacific Northwest shows..
Sept 15 – Portland, OR – Analog Theater Sept 16 – Seattle, WA – Tractor Tavern
Sept 17 – Vancouver, BC – Fortune Sound Club
Sept 19 – Victoria, BC – Rifflandia
Not a new NEW song, but they’re trying to sell it to Canadian radio. I doubt you’ll hear this on a radio station like CFOX but maybe on a modern rock station.
Personally I love Borns. “You make my heart beat like the rain.”

Burger Records style garage rock from Together Pangea. I don’t know what it is with this lazy hazy rock and roll lately, but I loves it.
They say the rains are a comin’ to Vancouver this weekend. It might rain more in the next two days then it has rained all summer. And I’ll be taking a long weekend in Victoria while my wife is in Seattle. Ha. Ain’t that the way.
Decided I better get after THIS day as best I can with a Yolk’s food truck poached egg and seat with a view on the street.
FIDLAR released a brand new song yesterday called “Leave Me Alone.”
Stereogum had the premier where they say, “The new record doesn’t scrimp when it comes to giant hooks or appropriately buzzed-out guitars, but it does add an extra layer to finesse to the band’s reliably scrappy songs.”
Their new record Too is out on September 4th and I’ll be all over it next Friday for sure. God I love these guys.
FIDLAR is on tour in the fall…and typical US band, no Vancouver date. What gives?
10/22 – Wonder Ballroom – Portland, OR
10/23 – The Showbox – Seattle, WA
And I can’t believe this song is two years old now.

Hit the PNE the other day to film an episode of Sip and Spin and got to sample some food. I had heard rumblings of a mystical food called the “Fat Elvis” but sadly did not order one. I really should have. Wow.
