Aquilo is the super chill duo from the super chill village of Silverdale, which looks to my ignorant eyes…as a town in a park in England? Must be nice.
Today is a perfect one in Vancouver. I went to Storm Crow Alehouse on Broadway to tape an episode of their podcast. My walk into the city after was glorious.
I’ll let you know when the podcast goes live and maybe you’ll throw it a listen for me? We yap some Dungeons and Dragons, Stranger Things, James Corden, Pokemon, beer.
The Morning After music blog is coming to you from scenic Vancouver. The city sits on a fjord/inlet and at the base of the some mountains. My daughter has been bugging me to take her up into the snow ( she wants to ski but doesn’t know how yet) so I thought we’d try some snowshoeing.
We went to Grouse last weekend to play in the snow but that place is crazy busy and expensive, so I took her to the less insane Mount Seymour (the other local mountain is Cypress where they had some 2010 Olympic events…and Whistler is about an hour and half north).
During our hike I rolled tape…you know for 7, she was a trooper and it was a great afternoon.
Our soundtrack for the drive from the ‘burbs up to the mountain… that Aquilo ep Painting Pictures of a War.
Hey music blog reader…sorry it’s been some time since I hit the MAS blog…before Halloween? Nuts. I’ll need to try to stay up on it…I don’t have many readers, but I do enjoy trolling for new music. And I have some DJ gigs coming up, it gives me an excuse to listen to lots of stuff.
Here is a song I heard today, it’s pretty chill. Very beautiful. Performer is called Cigarettes After Sex, song is “Affection.”

And since we’re jamming pretty ones, how about Aquilo. I love this guy(s).
Spring time on the west coast is magical. Though I guess so is summer and fall? Winter ain’t terrible either. It’s a good place to live.
We did Fake Mothers’ Day last weekend because that is when I could get a reservation into the Oak Bay Marina Restaurant. Their Sunday buffet is a marvel. Then we went exploring for some obsidian. My daughter did not find any, but she did find TWO rocks that looked like hearts, a chunk of cement? and some quartz. All in all, it was a good haul by her standards. Yet she must continue to seek the elusive obsidian.
Came home to lots of emails from bands. I’ll try to hammer out a few songs that caught my ear for you.
It must begin with British duo Aquilo because I love them.
Pleasure Beach are from Belfast, Northern Ireland (what is Northern Ireland, a country or Province? or like a region?).
I did learn that Pleasure Beach is the UK’s number one theme park! So that’s neat. But it is located in the ominous sounding town of Blackpool. Scary…sounds like that type of place where you’d set your horror story or a boring BBC period drama that gets popular in Canada a few years later and people who pretend to be sophisticated force themselves to watch it like fictional kale for your mind.
Did you ever read the book The Chrysalids? Fringers man… fringers.
The party ends with Australia’s king of commercial radio, Mr. Vance Joy. The dude is poised for complete and total world domination when he hops on the Taylor Swift Tour.He released a cover of her 1989 (I do like that record shhhhhhh) song “I know Places.”
The British duo is from the north-west region of the UK. A little village north of Lancashire. The pair have been tapped as a rising artist this summer showing up where they need to; Guardian, BBC, Glastonbury. Their ep “Human” came out on December 8th. They also have a music video for “I Gave it All.” That song is straight up perfect.
The music video is split into two parts and I have a feeling part 2 will be exceptionally heartbreaking. Oh man…I’ll need a helmet to watch it.

So we already know and love Aquilo…but the new discovery from Site of Sound was this cut from a group called Girl Friend. They rip a page out of music marketing 2014; hip graphics, a link to their manager, band photo and NO BIO INFO.
Much mysterio!

This one is pretty cool… from Chubby Beavers…. FMLYBND‘s cover of the Pixies’ classic “Where Is My Mind.”
Feeling worn out today. Maybe its a bit of a cold I inherited from my wife/son?….maybe training too hard? ….part of it could be a bout of the ol’ depression?
Probably all three…but the saddest songs always sound the best when I am in my moods.
The artist is Aquilo. The British duo is from an area called the Lake District? I thought England had paved over all their lakes by 1720 and that’s why they had to colonize Canada?

This song is a couple years old…but new to me today. London’s Khushi.
