AV Club wrote a fun article taking us back to indie rock circa 2004. They focused on Pinback‘s album Summer in Abaddon. Also…they had a little shoutout to Hype Machine. Nice.

I used to love that album and still listen to it quite a bit today. I ended up down the musical rabbit hole today while at the radio factory and re-discovered a beauty off the previous record, Blue Screen Life. A song called “Concrete Seconds.”

I love that line, “Anything I say to you is gunna come out wrong anyway.”  Beautiful.

An interesting slice of daily drama for some guy unfolds during this 4 minutes and 8 seconds. I wonderer if he ever figured it out? What did the woman’s t-shirt say?

This “world bacon shortage” makes for an adorable headline because every meat eater (and few vegetarians) I know, sing its praises.  At our home, Coral and I like to make up a nice breakfast on at least one weekend day with Mads… and bacon tends to be part of it.  The other day I went into the grocery store and noticed that all the mainstream brands were floating around $7.50/500 grams.  YIKES!

There may not be a shortage, but meat prices are expected to raise a bit.  The price was a powerful motivator to once again think about food.  At $7.50, the factory meat just doesn’t make sense.  I traditionally buy it because its cheap, but $7.50?  might as well get some delicious locally produced stuff.  Same price, infinity better product.

Also got me to think about an article that came out in MacLean’s back in September.

Charcuterie is the meat of the matter.

Article also features my buddy Alex Harford.  Rad.  AND its about making your own bacon…. hmmmm… need a smoker and maybe this book >> Charcuterie

Some of my faves spinning on the home hard drive according my Last FM page.

The new Dudes song “Pretty Lies” is so darn good, it has inspired me to fire up anything Dudes that I have at home, anytime I am at home.  The only reason I don’t listen to the dudes right now, is if I have Vancouver fuzz masters Japanadroids going, or “1901” from Phoenix.

Ringtones are dumbest (or maybe greatest?) invention.

Now, I value my money.  When I am walking down Douglas Street and some man puts out his hand to ask for money, I say, “sorry man, I value my money.”  You’d never catch me… maybe… lighting money on fire.  Wouldn’t happen.  Coral wanted to buy some jars today to put the coffee in to keep it fresh, they cost like, $3 or $4 bux maybe? maybe?  I was all, “no, I value my money.”  And after all that… the Airborne Toxic Event battles through my strong defense and I download “Sometime Around Midnight.”  The charge?  Three dollars and fifty cents.  What do I get?  15 seconds of the intro!  WTF?  I can download the song, all of it, in stunning MP3 quality for a buck!

Burned… I had to download another ringtone… so yeah, now when you phone, 15 seconds of “Panic Switch” blares at me and I’m $7 poorer.  And hopefully wiser.  RINGTONE!

I think, when I’m hanging out with the Airborne Toxic Event at the Sasquatch Music fesitval next weekend, I’ll mention something to them.

The Replacements are a band I play when I am sad.  I was sad after the Canucks lost to Chicago last week.

My cousin Monica is getting married!  whoa!  to a cop!  whoa.  Chris (the cop) is a good man, he showed me how to make a grown man cry with a simple maneuver to the nose.  Seriously, he made me cry, it works.  On their wedding website I A: RSVP’d (I’ll be rocking the stuffed chicken) and B: listened to some Peter Gabriel.  They have one of my favourite songs, “In Your Eyes” streaming.

James Taylor?  SWA?  I like him… but I don’t know why I played so much last week.  weird.

Phoenix is so hawt right now on The Zone @ 91-3.  Sometimes I bring my work home with me.  The video is that Youtube clip waiting for you at the top, great view… so if you skipped it because you think your time is more valuable than that three minute gem, your wrong, its not, click the video already.

The Rev came on after something else I was listening to, and I kept that party going.

Flo Rida.  Yeah. What?  I like him.

and I end my playlist with some Pinback, because…

I WAS in love with iTunes Genius… and I do still sorta like Genius, but sometimes it makes me go WTF?

I wanted to base a playlist on Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.”  Brilliant song.  I did get a wonderous song from Rogue Wave called “Eyes” which is special and a song that made me sad in Pinback’s “Fortress.”

But then a whole bunch of other crud… mind you, all this “crud” is on MY hard-drive… but still, Genius was down-right  well… genius with yesterday’s “Pennyroyal Tea” playlist.  I guess I just expected genius everytime.

Coral and I just finished watching Grey’s Anatomy and I am not liking the lack of nurses on the show.  Nurses are a big part of getting healed and they are never anywhere to be found… it is always some crying, over-sexed doctor saving the day.  I haven’t had too many encounters with the health care system (ouch wood) but I pretty big one was the birth of Madelyn.  And it was nurses that were the for the whole ordeal and it was nurses that make you feel better.  Sure, doctors swoop in from time to time, but it was nurses who did all the work.  There should be more nurses on Grey’s Anatomy.

A couple stories in the news today that had me looking cock-eyed at the computer and wondering, “wow, this my community.”

Times-Colonist: Felon Steals Again Minutes After Being Released By Police

A 33-year-old man, already out on probation for breaking into a house, was picked up two weeks ago and taken to Victoria police headquarters for allegedly stealing a camera from a car. He was processed and released back onto Caledonia Avenue, outside headquarters. Undercover officers watched in amusement as he walked half a block away and, barely out of the shadow of the police station, returned to old habits.

“Within five minutes he breaks into another two cars,” said Sgt. Grant Hamilton, police spokesman.

Neat.  Imagine if that was your car and you had to pay the $300 deductible.  grrrr.

The police are cool about it, god bless ’em.
Both Hamilton and Bown were reluctant to criticize the justice system for its role in handing out sentences that appear to do little to deter career criminals. They said police simply focus on doing their jobs, which is only one part of the law-enforcement process.

“It is definitely a concern of ours that these people come and go from jail, but it’s a bigger social issue of what to do with these people,” said Bown.

“We can’t put everybody in jail. There’s just not enough room.”

I get that, can’t throw every criminal in jail… but you know what?  I bet we could find a cot or something to roll out for this guy, I mean he really wants to be in jail.
