Neon Steve Goldstream
Capital Rock City time…some sounds out of Victoria. Neon Steve is local producer/DJ who spends his hours crafting new beats or travelling the world performing.  I’ve had the chance to meet him once, quality dude.  For those of you outside the Capital Region, Goldstream is a park.

On Saturday, Vancouver’s Dear Rouge took the boat over to perform at Lucky Bar.  The husband/wife team and Peak Performance winners (2012) currently have the #5 song on modern Rock Radio in Canada. Neat.  They hung out with Jon Williams on Saturday afternoon and recorded their hit “I Heard I Had.”

Tomorrow I hope to have some live Kim Churchill for you.  Wednesday will feature The Zolas.

Bonus cut not from Victoria… just showed up on my Soundcloud feed and I dug it.  Bipolar Sunshine is from manchester, England.

Jesse Roper and The Roper Show will be performing tonight (Happy Birthday Tindy!) at Upstairs Cabaret. If you’re planning on hitting the concert, tickets are selling like hot cakes. Red hot hot cakes. So go get ’em before it sells out.

Yesterday he stopped by the radio show to perform a couple songs live.  Both new ones.

The support act for the show tonight is a group called Band of Rascals.

Marty
When I first moved to Victoria back in 2003…there was a popular local band we used to play on The Zone called Grace Nocturnal. The lead singer was a dude named Marty Zylstra.  The band would eventually dissolve and the members would move on to other projects.

Marty ended up in Vancouver where he fronted a band called Sweetheart.  I remember hearing their cut “See You On the Weekend” on an old Starbucks compilation.

He is now operating as a solo performer.  His new single is called “Brighton.”

here is what he writes on a press release:

Carl Davis (the Left, the Pompadoors) produced this new three song EP in an old school and almost Nashville style studio session where the songs were finished on the studio floor with only the best Vancouver based studio musicians.

Mixed by Mr. Davis and mastered by Sean McGee (the Beatles, John Lennon) at Abbey Road Studios this initial offering shows three sides of Marty’s personality which includes an affinity for British culture, lyrical themes of a vision of past life lessons and future domestic bliss, and a sheer twisted humour.

junior legend
I got an email last week from my man Dave Roche sending my attention to his new project Junior Legend.  I have known Dave for years but I hadn’t heard from him in a long time.  He used to be in a band called The Vendors.   He is now making music with another ex-Vendor and Matt from Kincaide (another old but not forgotten Victoria band form the 00s).

Dave said more music is gunna come, but for now they have a song called “Mr. Right” for us.  If you’re familiar with The Vendors or Kincaide, this won’t sound anything like that.

They’ll have a show at The Copper Owl in April.

kandle
Island artist Kandle Osborne took the trip east and settled in Montreal to work on her career as a performer.  Her bluesy, garage, dark swamp pop record In Flames came out yesterday.  Check out the second single “Control Me.”

The record was recorded with the help of Neil Osborne of 54-40 fame (her dad) and she was able to rope in Sam Goldberg on guitar.  He has done work with Broken Social Scene and Bionic.

The Montreal Gazette calls her “an old witch for a young generation.”

That’s weird.

She talks in the interview, “I sort of get into character when I sing. I can become a bit of a creep (…) I like to get a bit spooky or dramatic at times. Singing a song straight is all right, but why do that when you can do something cooler?”

jon
Thursday, Jon Williams and I got spoiled at the Radio Factory.  We had our Zone Band of the Month Geoff Lundstrom in to perform his single “Wash The Dirt Off.”  But then the dude stuck around and recorded a cover of Lorde‘s Much Mega Hit, “Royals.”  His trio consisted of himself with Amy and Chris on keys.  Amy let Jon hold her 1948 Martin D 28 acoustic guitar!

Earlier, we had Victoria’s Zerbin in studio.  The boys dropped a beautiful take on The National‘s  “I Need My Girl.”

Maybe you’ll be able to get behind one of these covers and you’ll share it with your friends.

The Morning After Show in on Facebook?  Believe the hype and throw me a “like.”

L
ots of local stuff to have a listen to today.

Lets start with RADco or Red Arrow Drilling Company.  They’ll be playing a show in support of Igor and the Red Elvises at Lucky Bar on Sunday.  Doors at 8PM.

NEXT!  The group is called Magnetic.

Here’s the bio… Magnetic is an electro-indie rock duo from Victoria, BC, Canada. “My Heart Is Very Nearly Pure” is our new EP.

Mark Weiler is an ambient/electronic artist who has quietly pumped out 9 albums worth of sweeping longing instrumental indie/electronica over the past eleven years as Magnetic. For this release he’s joined by multi-instrumentalist Shane Sparks (Faith, My Atheist Love) on vocals and various bits and bobs. The result is narrative electro-indie rock that combines new wave, electronica, and brooding orchestral sounds.

“trust fund girls don’t stay long on the scene.”  Oy vey!

Robbie Aylesworth is a Victoria singer-songwriter recording a new record right now at Hooge Studio.  This Friday he will be performing at the Hope for Hannah benefit concert at the Alix Goolden Hall.  He popped by The Radio Factory for live performance.

And finally…

Me and Razer went to the Cambie a couple weeks ago to see a band called War Baby.  We had to peace before local band Secondhand Habit took the stage.  So missed out on this cut…

speak slow
Ciele sent me her latest project.  Idle Mind from Calgary produced a nice chill track featuring Ciele’s vocals and Paul Francis‘ guitar.

Not a bad chill track.  Ciele vocals, as always, are very pretty.
