Biega graphic
One more….ok two more.

I stayed on the SubPop soundcloud while working away, and this Doldrums song is banging hard and good.

And from the radio show yesterday, a song inspired by play of the new Vancouver Canucks d-man Alex Biega. His first game was Monday against the Wild and he scored his first goal! I wish I could sing like John Tillman.

Father Johns Cocktail
I’ve had the new Father John Misty record, I Love You, Honeybear, spinning on heavy rotation. It’s a beauty.

Coral and I spun his previous album hard in the old Civic during our California road trip a couple summers ago. This new one is easy to slide into.

I am not sure if FJM is making fun of 30-something white guys, is a 30-something white guy singing about the struggle, or is a 30-something white guy making fun of our “struggle.” Doesn’t matter, he has a nice voice.

The new METZ song posted by SubPop the other day is a flamethrower. Here we go, rock and roll music.

Propaganda 2

A couple more songs heard in a coffee shop for you.

Selecting the right vibe for your business’ playlist can be a challenge. No doubt. My general rule (other than “play the hits”) is…go to a place you love, or you wish your business was, listen, Shazam everything, and go from there.

Once you have the bones, filling in the blanks is work but you can do it. Always be open to adding and subtracting. It’s a living thing.

Likewise, if you’re in a business, and the music turns you off, don’t do that. Easy. Kinda.

Today a couple songs caught my ear while sipping a latte in Propaganda.

Treasureseason. London electro. Female vocals, video game beats. Pretty.

Their soundcloud had a bunch of songs. I liked this cover of “Mad World.”

Some weirdo indie group from Belgium called Hoquets… “a shock, a sudden interruption.” Good word.

Couldn’t find a ton on this group. The song was called “Chaud Boulet.” Here is an electro-pop remix which punches it up a bit.

Islands
I was thinking I want a boat (while on a boat) this morning. Nothing fancy…something to putt around and see the islands and fjords of British Columbia on my own time.

Here is a cover of Nirvana done by Father John Misty. Not bad. Chill. Sparse.

That reminds me, I really do need to track down his latest record…for Coral. For Coral.

New Braids song speaks to a truth that many women can relate to.

I’ll leave the commentary up to the knowledgeable bloggers and thinkers and share the song.

passion pit lifted up

Back in Vancouver after another great weekend on the Island.

On the ferry over to Victoria on Friday night, I read this amazing story of a young man, diagnosed with terminal cancer, who made the journey from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail. Unreal.

I don’t think I’ll have have that wonderful trifecta of money, time, health to pull off this adventure. But I do enjoy reading the tales from the adventurers that can. I am thankful that Astro shared his story before his end.

Where my life is at right now, I can’t even put together 48 hours for a backpacking trip.

Monday begins with a new song Passion Pit.  The new record will be called Kindred and it will be out on April 21st. You can preorder it tomorrow. The first single is “Lifted Up (1985).”

“Nineteen eighty-five was a good year!”

I still love “Take a Walk.”

Penn_State_Football_1900
Polyvinyl sent out an email today, talking about their annual Valentines Day sale…not in the space to buy any records today, but it did get me in the mood to listen to American Football. From their 1999 s/t record.

And here’s a Wampire cut because the song is called “Wizard Staff.”

Happy Friday! I hope you have a great Valentine’s Day weekend.

Chinatown
I was hanging out this morning at Propaganda, drinking a coffee and reading my book Sonic Boom.

The author talked about picking music for your brand, I loved this segment; “Don’t base your music choices on your gut instinct alone.  When you just add music that you like and that you think makes the ad better – with no strategy – you’ll find yourself endlessly arguing with everyone in your company who has his or her own opinion about the music. There won’t be a clear goal or agreement on the values the music is trying to convey.”

Working in commercial radio….this quote really spoke to the challenges of programming a mainstream radio station.

Email today from This Will Destroy You. The atmospheric rockers are on tour and in Vancouver on March 25th at the Electric Owl.

The record is called Another Language and came out last September. They released a music video last week for side-one/ track-one.

Here is the first single, “Dustism.”

I do love San Francisco’s Waters. The band blends a 90s alternative sound with modern pop-rock production. They feel a little like Grouplove, but I pull a little more Kurt Cobain out of it compared to what passes for radio modern rock right now.

Waters shares another cut from their upcoming April 7th Vagrant release, What’s Real.

Have a great weekend! My family is coming to Vancouver this weekend to have a city Family Day long weekend. IO hope you find an adventure.
