boyhood

Back from an amazing weekend in Victoria. It was my birthday on Saturday. I turned 35! Huzzah!

The family and I went out for a nice brunch and then I took Madelyn to see Annie. Much singing.

Before getting into the season premier of Girls (I love it. I know, I’m the worst), my wife had the Golden Globes on. Oh my, I heard Family of the Year‘s “Hero” 8,000 times!

A couple years ago the band was in Victoria. They stopped by my radio show and recorded a couple acoustic songs for us. One of those songs? “Hero.”

When I see an article start with “emo sucks now but” I want to read it.

Floridian? band You Blew It! have a new record and a tour. Nice. Now Vancouver date (or even Seattle). Not Nice.

I have their 2014 record, Keep Doing What You’re Doing. Solid disc. I’m looking forward to hearing more new stuff from these guys.

Happy Friday music blog reading gangster. Wrapping my first week in Vancouver on CFOX. After the show I am racing to the ferry to get home to my babies and baby.

I’ll post one last one this week and get back to you probably on Monday.

San Francisco’s Waters did a cover of the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight Tonight.”

Growing up I used to love the Smashing Pumpkins. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness came out when I was 15. I rocked that double album hard. Plus we were living in the era of music videos on the actual TV. The Pumpkins had more than one Much Mega Hit off that disc including the journey to the moon video for this cut.

The San Fran band Waters does a noble job of plugging into that 90s alt-rock vibe that I still like to hear. Their singles (and ep in general) are favourites on my playlists at home. I won’t be able to make the trip to Seattle for their February 10th show. Maybe one day they’ll venture further north or play the Emerald City on a weekend that works for me.

And since we’re loving the cover songs…. we’ll go a back a few months. Waters covering the Cranberries.

Happy Friday! Thank you for reading and sending emails and generally being a groovy music loving person.

Go with yourself.

THURSDAY! One more sleep and I’ll be back on the boat to Victoria to see my family. It has been exceptionally exciting starting a new job in Vancouver. But without the kids being terrors around me, its just too quiet.

I was reading a music blog post from Breaking More Waves. Basically a music blog post about music blog posts. Good times. The writer was talking about music blogs all posting the same tunes (or maybe the perception that they [we] do?).

In the end, the conclusion, that reaching some sort of consensus was ultimately good for artists and music fans. I’d agree. Personally I just post what I’m feeling at the moment. Sometimes #1 on Hype Machine. Sometimes its charting on the radio. Sometimes its a older cut and sometimes its a discovery. I think the only people that read a bunch of music blogs are music bloggers.

I do want to start today with the #1 on Hype Machine because it’s pretty good.

LostBoyCrow is Chris. The LA based singer/writer/producer rounded out the sound by teaming up with Flor.

The music is has a modern LA dark-pop or alt-pop vibe. LBC is working on a record and starting to book with a showcase in April. Rad.

The radio station I work at play Tom Petty. I love Tom Petty. Check out this beauty cover from Benjamin Francis Leftwich. Like, wow.

Oh.ma.gawd. The dude does a cover of “Swim Until You Can’t See Land.” I’m in love.

I think Leftwich is on Vagrant Records? Trolling their page I came across a London band Letts. Let’s check out “Matches” from their upcoming record Hold Fast.

Party ends with producer Stan Rapoport. He performs as Black Coast. The NYC based producer teamed up with singer/poet M. Maggie. Here we go.

CFOX
First show today on Vancouver’s CFOX. I am pretty excited! Also crazy nervous.

Listening to some new tunes today getting ready for the show. Will start with Jagjaguwar band out of Calgary, Viet Cong.

My blog isn’t cool enough to embed their cut “Silhouettes” so you get this one.

The song is called “Continental Shelf.”

Whattya call this? Post-punk? Love it. Reminds me of Vancouver’s Elizabeth if you remember those guys.

New record is self-titled and out on January 20th. No Vancouver show, but you can truck down the I-5 to Seattle for a show in March.

This song came on right after on my Soundcloud feed. I actually really like it too… Parts & Labor.

Alterna-Pop out of Quebec. Duo is called Fjord.

Nice, big yet soft sound.

Reporting for duty. First day in Vancouver. Woke up to some serious rain. My Dad dropped me at the Skytrain and after 40 minutes-ish…I was downtown. Here is a picture from Granville and Georgia. My new radio job is way up on the 21st floor of the black tower on the left of this pic. Neat.

Maybe I should have a Vancouver band for you today, but I do not.

I have Victoria’s Band of Rascals.

Groovy. Bluesy. The feature song is called “Giv’her to the River.” Get your lighter out.

Check out Band of Rascals on January 23rd at Sugar Nightclub. They’ll be playing in support of Jesse Roper’s album release party.

Jack is one

Happy Holidays blog nation. Enjoyed a nice Christmas with my family in Coquitlam. Now the tribe is back on the Island for New Year’s and today is my son’s first birthday.

Happy Birthday Jack Baker. One year old today!

He is a funny little gremlin. Very active. Climbs up on and then off of everything. Remarkably happy by daylight hours. But get him wet or feed him after midnight, and look out.

His hobbies include watching sports played on natural grass, Madelyn’s toys, eating things off the floor (five second rule HOLLA!), going for hikes, and smashing the phone.

Happy Birthday!

Hmm, a song. I have been off the computer and I’m between radio jobs right now so to be honest, I haven’t been listening to too much. I fired up my sound cloud today and I noticed a new post from JP Maurice.

“That Day” is another cut from 2013’s The Arborist. Bright guitars, breezy vibes.

I am moving to Vancouver in 2015. I’ll be presenting a radio show on CFOX. As it stands, my first show will be January 7th. Make a date with your radio!

I wanted to share one of my favourite radio memories. This is a clip of a story I shared on the Zone back in the fall of 2008 when my daughter Madelyn was just a wee bee-bee. I always liked it.

Looking forward to getting back in the new music exploration business with you in 2015. Thank you for checking out my blog.

seattle

Back to the grind for a couple more days. I’ll be jamming my final two radio shows on The Zone @ 91-3 this week. Then I am off to Vancouver to take on the Afternoon Show on CFOX!

This past weekend was spent in Redmond, Washington. My wife’s sister and her family moved to the Seattle suburb and it was our first chance to catch up with them since moving to the Pacific Northwest.

I always LOVE exploring Washington State. We took the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles and meandered east to a town called Kingston. We took a quick ferry across the Puget Sound to Edmonds and then criss-crossed northern Seattle to Redmond.

Our soundtrack pretty much the whole way there? Montreal based Ought and their record More Than Any Other Day.

I was reading Paste’s 20 Best New Bands list. (Ought was number 14)

I am now obsessed with their post-punky vibes that remind me of 80s alternative or even Modest Mouse.

We had this record on repeat for our cruise through the temperate rainforest.

street sweeper car
Site of Sound continues to show off a few beauties. Been jiving on that music blog today.

Aquilo is my new favourite slow jam artist.

The British duo is from the north-west region of the UK. A little village north of Lancashire. The pair have been tapped as a rising artist this summer showing up where they need to; Guardian, BBC, Glastonbury.  Their ep “Human” came out on December 8th. They also have a music video for “I Gave it All.” That song is straight up perfect.

The music video is split into two parts and I have a feeling part 2 will be exceptionally heartbreaking. Oh man…I’ll need a helmet to watch it.

***

So we already know and love Aquilo…but the new discovery from Site of Sound was this cut from a group called Girl Friend. They rip a page out of music marketing 2014; hip graphics, a link to their manager, band photo and NO BIO INFO.

Much mysterio!

***

This one is pretty cool… from Chubby Beavers…. FMLYBND‘s cover of the Pixies’ classic “Where Is My Mind.”

***

Turntable Kitchen’s Fall Mixtape features this gem.

BORNS is from LA.  The song is called “10,000 Emerald Pools.” I dig it.

BORNS ep was released in November and is called Candy. According to the internet, he wrote the ep while living in a treehouse? Neat.

I think Radiohead should update their 90’s tune to, “everyone can program a drum machine.”

panama stay forever

Another geographically named band from Australia. This is an older cut from Sydney’s Panama. But the song is new to me!

We previously enjoyed the minor modern rock hit “Always” on the blog earlier in the summer.

Panama released the wistful ode to suburban friendship in August as a free download. (actually I don’t know what they’re saying….I thought it said “Stay forever, friends, in the suburbs”…I’m an idiot.)

It took me a while to listen to this song, luckily an old Site of Sound blog post showed up on my feed.
