Frank Turner first showed up on Tea Time with Jon Williams… since then, the man branded as “Folk-Punk” has started gaining some traction on Canadian modern rock.

Jon said, after playing this song one time on his show, he received half-a-dozen emails from people wondering, “what was that?”

I can get behind that… he mines the folk style currently dominating popular rock and roll, but adds a little more brain power, and a light punk rock edge.  I hate myself for saying, “a light punk edge.”  But that’s the best way to explain it.

Turner’s fifth record, Tape Deck Heart is out on April 23rd…. if the single is any indication, it should be a fun record.

Frank Turner recently put out a short documentary called The Way I Tend To Be.  He talks a little bit about a British man of privilege who rejected that scene for punk rock.  He went to Eton College in the UK but fell in with hardcore.  He says in the documentary that maybe 3 kids knew what that was.

Here’s a guy that could be, I dunno… what do Eton kids go on to?  Rule Empires?  The dude decided to embrace the DIY scene and toured around earning 50£ a night if he was lucky.  Hard work, quality song craftsmanship, and timing and he’s on the radio on the other side of the world.  The sun doesn’t set on Frank Turner.

If you’re a fan of Frank Turner’s style, this documentary is worth 16 minutes of your life.

RI 7" 5mm spine lp cover
How good was last night’s Game of Thrones?  So much to like… There was a scene where the Brotherhood Without Banners were on the march singing a jovial tune.  The song is a classic slice of Westerosianna…. “The Bear and The Maiden Fair.”

During the credits a modern rendition is sung by The Hold Steady. Spin Magazine talks about show producers  David Benioff and Dan Weiss tapping the Hold Steady to record fantastical tune.

“[‘The Bear & the Maiden Fair’] is one of the most popular songs in Westeros, beloved by nobles and commoners alike, sung at taverns and feasts and etc,” Benioff and Weiss told Entertainment Weekly recently. “We wanted our rendition to be bawdy and a little sloppy — drunken musicians getting up on the table and jamming while the rowdy party continues around them.”

A bear, a BEAR!

Aidan
Victoria indie musician Aidan Knight is trying to raise some funds for a new tour van.  To help reach his goal he has created a new ep called Telecommunicate and an exclusive poster.

The story is interesting, from his website Aidan talks about his inspiration.

Telecommunicate is a new 4 song EP based on the true story of Robin Van Helsum. Nicknamed “Forest Boy” by international media, Van Helsum was a troubled runaway who convinced the world that he lived alone in the woods for 5 years. Just as quickly as his hoax was uncovered, Robin fled the authorities again. The father of a young child, estranged from his ailing father, and working for a telecommunications company – Forest Boy’s story is as nuanced and compelling as it is mystifying.

The entire proceeds of this EP (written, performed and recorded in 7 days) are destined for a new tour vehicle for Aidan Knight and company. Hence, yknow, the van.
Pre-order Telecommunicate via Bandcamp.

The actual story is just as crazy.

Mistsaken
Oh man, I am looking forward to seeing The National‘s Mistaken For Strangers…. tour documentary type thing.

Pitchfork describes it today and had this bit of interview from Matt Berninger.

My brother and I are totally different kinds of people. Similar in a lot of ways, but we have the same parents, and we have completely different demons.

It was a strange movie to make. At first when we went on tour, we decided we were making a mockumentary. We did a lot of that stuff for a while, then eventually there was a lot of tension between Tom and Brandon [Reid, tour manager], and Tom had wanted to put himself a little bit into the picture.

The band is two sets of brothers, I’m the guy without a brother in the band, and my mom would always be sending him links to articles about us, where it would say that all the time. We joked about it a little bit, but I think he had a little bit of a chip on his shoulder. He wanted the world to find out that there is another brother. Eventually, things kind of went south as far as his role as assistant tour manager. We crafted some of it to tell that story, and we’re not calling it a pure documentary, but it’s a very honest, personal narrative that we started chasing.

My wife, who’s really good at that, she was like, that’s a better movie than any kind of goofball mockumentary thing that you guys started out trying to do. She’s like, you guys are plenty funny, and Tom’s plenty funny, but the truthful awkward things were much more moving. His awkward questions [for the band]– he’s not faking those! That was the stuff that was the most interesting part of the movie.

He moved in with us, which was a whole toxic situation– he’s making a movie about himself and me, living with my wife and I and our daughter, and he was kind of acting as our nanny at the same time – and he still does, he lives with us still!

Ben Howard Keep Your HEad Up
My head hurts today.  Trying to keep all the balls in the air is a lot of work.

Last night, Coral sent me a recipe to make Quinoa Pizza Bites, that was a victory.

This morning, I tried to donate blood, but they said I had no veins.  C’est dommage.

Today I am eating a tupperware full of plain quinoa… its not not delicious.

When I punched up Facebook, Vince Vaccaro posted a remix from a song that I am feeling.

Ben Howard’s posit-rock track “Keep Your Head Up.”

This song will be showing up in the set tonight at The Veneto Lounge!

Jake Bugg
Arrived at the radio factory feeling really refreshed today.  Beautiful along the Gorge Waterway, over the trestle bridge and through Rock Bay sipping on my first Icee of the year.  Slept like a baby last night.  I don’t want to want to brag, but in my dreams I bought Jay-Z’s share of the Brooklyn Nets and we totally bro’d down.  The times were good.  I think Bey brought us snacks… I can’t remember exactly, it was a dream after all.

Bossman Johnny shared a great performance with me.  Last night he saw 19-year-old Nottingham sensation Jake Bugg on Letterman last night.

Jake shreds a classic sounding 60’s invasion style of American blues rock.

His resume includes a #1 record in the UK, tours with Snow Patrol and Noel Gallagher, performances on Jools Holland and KCRW…. and so much more!

When I was 19… hmmmm? I think I worked over nights at CFUN.

This cut is a real fire cracker.

“Chances, people tell you not to take chances
When they tell you that there aren’t any answers
And I was starting to agree
But I awoke suddenly in the path of a lightning bolt”

I like how he is English so he says “Paff of a lightning bolt.” Adorable.

One of my favourites… Wake Owl are a folk group from Vancouver. Their ep, Wild Country, is outstanding.  But what is interesting is that their music, organic, beautiful, folky, lends itself so well to the remix.

Just before Christmas, we talked about the Noah Hyde remix of “Gold.” Now, Abbotsford chillwaver Teen Daze put his haze all over “Wild Country.”

Where as Noah Hyde laid a little boogy behind Wake Owl… Teen Daze reaches for a different goal.  His spin is an epic slow burn.  The DJ saving the slowest song for last.

Teen Daze recently posted a short 4 song ep called The House on The Mountain. An ode to Spring in the Fraser Valley.  He post-scripts, “All proceeds made off this record will go towards my wedding budget. Love you bean!”  CUTE ATTACK!

We are some lucky ducks in Victoria.  This summer, Rock The Shores bring Jimmy Eat World to the BEST island in the Dominion.  Saturday, July 13th in support of City and Colour.

This Arizona band is touring to support their 7th record, Damage.  We’ll get the record on June 11th.

The first single came down the internet tubes today for radio.  Let’s hit play on this….

Verse, chorus, verse.  Pre-hook, hook… sounds like a fun Jimmy Eat World song to me.  Commit it to memory and get ready to sing it back to the band in July!

Bell X1
Irish anthemic emotive rockers Bell X1 will be coming at us with their 6th studio record Chop Chop on June 28th.

Frontman Paul Noonan talks about the album title saying, “We returned to simpler times (…) when all around here (Connecticut)  was fields.  Shrink the palette, you know? Chop chop!”

The record was recorded at Peter Katis’ studio in Connecticut.  You know Peter Katis because he recorded and mixed Interpol’s classic Turn on The Bright Lights.  He has also produced every National record since 2002.  The album cover of their breakout album Boxer is a photograph of The National playing Peter’s wedding.

I first heard Bell X1 on Tea Time with Jon back in maybe 2011?  Of all the Tea Time songs I’ve heard from Jon… “Velcro” is probably the only one I still listen to, almost weekly and lives as a depth cut on my Veneto playlist.

Here is a live take of that song recorded in Dublin as part of their Field Recordings.

In Ireland, Bell X1 are a big deal. Headlining festivals and topping the charts with their blend of electronic and popular rock.  But for their new record Chop Chop, Peter Katis says the band dialed it back and simplified the process.

“I can’t remember the last time I was part of a record that was recorded, mixed and mastered in only two weeks (…) The guys came in really prepared song-wise and performance-wise. We had a ‘live’ setup of drums, bass and upright piano all in the same room—tracking to tape, going for full takes. It was a slightly old-fashioned approach, without the usual digital safety net, and I think that energy comes across in the music.”

Here is the single “Starlings Over Brighton Pier.”

the-national-demons
Blogging at night is probably bad for my SEO or hits or whatever, but here I am.  At the computer.  Jamming the new The National song “Demons.”

Like pretty much every National song I’ve ever been into save for “All The Wine,” this song requires patience and repeat listens…  Their music is soothing and healing.

The new record is called Trouble Will Find Me, and like a kid from the olden days, I’ll be lining up to buy it on May 21st.
