Stars

Stars frontman Torquil Campbell stopped by The Zone Afternoon Show on Friday.  The band was in town for a sold out show at Alix Goolden.

Stars are a band that I love and their 2004 record Set Yourself on Fire is a perfect album.

Torquil had been tweeting some interesting thoughts…could this be the last Stars tour?  Is Our Band Could Be Your Life the greatest book?

Torquil Campbell on The Zone @ 91-3

I was DJing at Veneto Friday night and missed the show…but after the concert, some friends popped by for a cocktail.  They were all glowing about the concert.

It got me all nostalgic for Set Yourself on Fire.  This record used to be one of my favourites.  I remember taking some classes at Camosun.  I walked to class in the snow, or rain, or cherry blossoms… jamming my discman.  And this record in particular.

Your Ex-Lover is Dead” is the first song.  Such a powerful and beautiful cut.  Saturday’s errands and a park visit with Madelyn called for Stars as the soundtrack.

Go with yourself.

Hannah Georgas is pretty much perfect.

A new music video is out now for her single “Somebody.”  It was worth my time.

Distraction Cover Web Resolution

Victoria band Leisure Suit sent me their latest single “Distraction.”  Oliver Brooks got in contact with me form the Czech Republic where I guess he is adventuring to say that “Distraction” is produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Dan Mangan, A.C. Newman) and mastered by Noah Mintz (Broken Social Scene, Stars).

References check out, we better hit play on this.

Very smokey.  Underhanded.  I like it.

straight from hell
Plucking through my old CDs, I couldn’t find any Joel albums.  That’s a real shame.  The other day CHEK News came down to the radio factory to record Boitano talking about getting a song played on the radio.  An artist from Vancouver named Jay came by to play a song and create a relationship to hopefully get a song considered for radio.

The dude flailed around on his acoustic guitar jamming this wild song.  I flashed back to a performer I remember named Joel.  He had this feral acoustic style that was mighty fun.  I sometimes remember his music and want to listen (always at weird times) and then I think… those records must be buried in storage or lost to time.

I do have one song… a track I blogged about a couple years ago.

This song, “Straight From Hell” I don’t know too much about.  It was recorded when Paul was still doing the Morning After Show with me on CiTR. So 2000? 2001?  Doesn’t matter I guess.

Savage. Go with yourself.

45 case

Spin has a great article today about the White Stripes’ 2003 album, Elephant.

On April 1st, it turned 10.

I remember when this record came out, I was new at The Zone.  We had “Seven Nation Army” on all the time.

That summer, me and my then girlfriend Alex, took a trip to Bob’s cabin at Christina Lake, and we had Elephant going in Dodge Colt’s Compact Disc player.

The Spin article begins with high praise for The White Stripes longest song, “Ball and Biscuit.”

“It begins and ends with “Ball and Biscuit,” and by “it,” I mean “Western civilization.” The 21st century’s most astounding, most wryly pornographic, most brain-meltingly electrifying blues song. Did the electric guitar even exist prior to “Ball and Biscuit”? Did distortion? Did hype? Did critical praise? Did the colors red and white? Did outlandishly oversize declarations of virility? Has there been a single memorable guitar solo performed anywhere, by anyone, in the decade since its release?” (that Spin article is pretty cool, worth your time if you have a fond memory for The Stripes)

We better listen to that one!

thirst

Dallas Green’s new record, The Hurry and The Harm, is coming out on June 4th.  The artist who brands as City and Colour will be in Victoria to headline Rock The Shores on July 13th.

Let’s have a listen to the first radio feature song… “Thirst.”

Sounds like an upbeat-ish City and Colour song to me!  What do you think?

According to legend (wikipedia), the Nightingale Floor was designed as a security measure against the ninja.  We all know about squeaky floors… maybe in an old house or wooden stairways.  The Nightingale Floor was designed to chirp!  Neat.

Indie rockers Rogue Wave will release their fifth record, Nightingale Floors, on June 4th.

Always a great band… looking forward to hearing the new disc.

Here is a wonderfully strange one.  Trolling one of my favourite music blogs Hilly Dilly… they featured the UK group Tunng.

Its some weirdo-folky-pop?  Spin calls is “Pastoral pop.”  Good description.

Let’s have a listen.  The record is out on June 17th and will be called Turbines.

These guys used to compose musical scores for soft-core porn?  Now I am really interested in watching a porn that doesn’t go all the way… you know, for the music.

John Denver

So, this is a thing.

I don’t know about you, but growing up my old man rocked a lot John Denver.  I can still sing-a-long word-for-word to so many of his songs.  Most all my family holiday memories recall a John Denver mixtape in the Voyager cassette deck.

Today ATO Records released, The Music Is You: A tribute to John Denver.

A pretty wonderful collection of contemporary artists putting their shine on a John Denver classic… except sadly, “Grandma’s Feather Bed.”

fangisland_cover

I made a Sasquatch 2013 playlist the other day.  Digging through some songs I had for some bands to check out.  One cut that has been burrowing into my head is Fang Island‘s “Daisy.”

The song isn’t new, it came out a few years ago.  So catchy and fun.  This beautiful weather we’ve been enjoying in the Rain Forest Kingdom has inspired me to walk EVERYWHERE. That means playlists and headphones.  This track puts a bounce in my step.
