The other night, Coral went through her phone sharing with me some of her current favourite songs. A couple days ago, I did blog a couple of her picks. But there were so many! I had to make a mixtape of Coral’s picks.
European DJ/Producer Tall Sasha sent over this remake of the U2 classic, “With or Without You.” How do they describe this? A progressive house banger? I like it, smooth… Natalie Major is young lovely providing the vocals.
Tall Sasha – “With or Without You” (U2 cover)
I could see an opportunity to drop this on a dance floor, but only the most progressive of weddings.
Getting bogged down. Brain power is low, energy is low. So much work and projects that need attention. It didn’t help that sleep crept up on me last night and I crashed hard. Had to play catch up this morning. The one thing I really wanted to do was put together a mix of songs Coral found. We downloaded a bunch, but I fell asleep before I could craft a podcast. So… coming soon?
Did roll into the Zone to some fine music. Mumford & Sons… the band single handily responsible for bringing Depression chic back popped into the BBC 1 for a live performance. BBC shows always seem to showcase a cover which I love. Mumford & Sons tackle a jam from the British hipsters Alt J.
Cool song. I think they’re singing about a movie, but I get a Mexican Standoff vibe.

I got an email the other day from some mucky muck working for Ghostkick. The duo reworked the massive massive from Phoenix, “1901.” This song has good propulsive energy for your running, workout of dance floor mix.
VancityRockGirl just got back from Turks & Caicos and her next adventure is to ITALY! (the food looks pretty awesome). Huckdoll did the Disneyland thing….which is on Coral and my list of things to get done. But after reading Huck’s blog, we might wait till Madelyn is a bit older. Which means… I am pretty close to talking Coral into Hawaii. She said Hawaii or Mexico might be fine if we can rally some cash.
She hasn’t been to either… I haven’t been to Mexico since 2006 and Hawaii since 1998! The problem we’ll run into is saving money. We are bad at it.
But I want to go to a coffee plantation and do a beach holiday so bad (or both).
Ah, we’ll see. Money, debt, time, work. Blah. MUSIC! Huzzah!

Today I bring you a couple from Coral’s currents list.
Coral heard this track somewhere (maybe Sirius XMU… which has terrible presentation, but some decent tunes). The group is called How To Dress Well. Coral thought this song “&It Was U” might be pretty groovy during the lounge sets at Veneto.
Another jam getting some spins at home that Coral is digging is a song I first heard during Tea Time on The Zone (3PM Monday to Friday with #TeamJollyJon) is Django Django. This British group slow burns and swirls with some weirdo-pop.
It sure turned into fall quickly on the Island. The bravely battle on, but there is a sharpness to the air and a chill.
The march toward winter also mean Bear Week on the Zone, so there is that. And there is this…a little remix of the classic Mamas & Papas jam, “California Dreamin'” by Minnesota.
The Mamas and the Papas – “California Dreamin'” (Minnesota Remix)
New Band of Horses album Mirage Rock came out yesterday and I rushed out to buy it. I have always been a fan of the band and Coral I have the previous albums in our collection.
My first listen last night had me a little underwhelmed. I am hoping with repeat listens some songs will grow on me. I do love the first song and lead single “Knock Knock” so we can always have that BOH.
The reviews aren’t very good. Stereogum was a, “its alright.” Pitchfork was a bit more, “WTF?” The Wizard? She loved it!
After I listened to Mirage Rock last night I thought of the song “A Horse With No Name” and I also thought… I wanna listen to one of the older Band of Horses records. I don’t think that is good.
I pulled out my older albums, and I like the covers of every BOH record.
Not every song will be a hit… but four quality records with so many gems ain’t bad.
As seems to be MuchMusic’s bread-and-butter these days… they are airing another remake of a better British sitcom (because Canadians are soooooooooooo boring) that involves some dorky Brits trying to get laid and drinking…. hang on wait-a-minute…they sound JUST like Canadians.
The show is called The Inbetweeners. Good times, quality laughs. I mention the show because I *think* it was last night we heard the song “Sleep Alone” by Two Door Cinema Club during the commercials. Much still plays the odd video, or part of a video between shows. I think we heard the song then. Coral and I both bobbed along and went, “oh right, I like this band.”
What did Jon Williams say, “we made a lot of memories.” Rifflandia was something special. Team Zone was in full battle mode with our friends at Wolf/Sheep and Tectoria.(how is that for partners? an art collective and TECHNOLOGY!) Tindy and Allie worked with Wolf/Sheep to create the world of Zonelandia in the Royal Athletic Park… and I’ll tell ya, I have never seen a radio set up at an event anything like it, ever. It almost looked like an American theme park… we even had a RIDE! (or you know, a scissor lift). Thank you to Tindy and Allie for building the whole world of Zonelandia. The best country on the planet. And thank you to all the volunteers for helping to run Zonelandia and Rifflandia.
Laid a lot of high fives. Thank you to all the Zoners that made it down.
hmmmm…there must be more shout outs, perogy truck!, and…. right its time to get the music.

My MP3 today comes from a Rifflandia discovery. I loved listening to Jinja Safari on Sunday. This Aussie band reminded me a whole lot like Vampire Weekend.
Its been awhile since I have blogged at home late at night. I’ve gotten in the habit of blogging at work during the day. probably this wasn’t the most interesting thing to start my post with… but whatever. I think my hit-counter on wordpress is broken. I get the same hits everyday it seems whether i blog or not… post a rad song for free download or not… or straight up not blog for a couple days. So to those trusty people that hit the blog for whatever random reason, thank you.
I got a lot of emails. Well, messages. I get chirped at a lot. I read what I can, respond as often as I can… do my part of internet citizenry. Sometimes I miss emails.
The other day was busy. I am running a couple contests at work through my work email (jeremy@thezone.fm what’s up?) so I was sorting through all the applications and sorting them out and replying when necessary when for whatever reason I went back a few days to see if I missed any… and would you look at that… an exceptionally rare communication from G7 Welcoming Committee. G7 is the Winnipeg based record label of Propagnadhi… well they are on Epitaph now, but G7 is their baby.
The email basically said, “hey dummy, new Propagandhi record.” Good enough for me… I clicked some links, found $20 on a not maxed out credit card (I know, I’m bad Blonde on a Budget) and ordered the vinyl of the new album Failed States.
I love Propgandhi. I wouldn’t say they inspired me to be a DJ… as I was a DJ when I discovered them… but they inspired me to live a life more rad.
And more than that… they are a magical example of a band that gets better and better with every record (to my ear at least).
Propagandhi’s album starts so huge….
Propagandhi – “Note to Self”
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. I am so jazzed to get into the the rest of the record after this song.

Okibi is playing Rifflandia this year. Thursday 9:30 Lucky Bar (Night Stage)
It’ll be a miracle of fates if I can get there in time (I am MCing a GREAT charity event Thursday night and will be late to the ragers.) And of course its at the same time as another homeboy, Northcote. Thursday 9:30 Metro Stage (Night Stage)
hmmm.
Then at 10:30 Thursday is it Wake Owl (Vic Event Center) or The Matinee (Wood Hall)?
OK… the point is, Okibi has a new mix tape for free download to get you amped. I downloaded it, the kid and wife went to bed, I cracked a beer (see above photo) and I listened to the whole thing.
As for 10:30, I might *try* the whole; half a set of one, half a set of the other… but I NEED to see Wake Owl I think.
Wake Owl – “Wild Country”
I love this song so much. I listen to the ep all the time… yeah, Matinee, I love you guys, but Wake Owl needs to happen.
I can’t believe its only two sleep till RIFFLANDIA!

I got some projects on the go. 1KM Beer Run? That’ll happen as a fundraiser for Madelyn’s preschool. Swimming lessons for Madelyn needs to happen when I get paid…aaaaaaaand, I think I want to launch a service like this in Victoria. But call it Shotgun Wedding. I’d also wedding plan unplanned weirdo weddings, the bizarre and interesting. All for the bride/groom on a budget in Victoria. We’ll see if this plan becomes a business or not. Its enough barely getting through my days as it is without another business plan that is seasonal in nature.
