northcote1

One of my favourites from Victoria… Northcote has a new record in the pipe. His third album will be titledHope is Made of Steel, and is due out on September 25th (Black Box Records).

We have our first single to listen to today called “Hope Is Made of Steel.”

Dave Genn produced the record (Matthew Good Band, 54:40) here in Vancouver.

“There is a clarity to the songs that I think I may have struggled with in the past.” (Matt) Goud said in a statement. “I remember playing at the Horseshoe in Toronto last summer and a friend asked me what a particular song of mine meant to me, and I didn’t haven’t a very clear answer. I feel on this record, I have written a batch of songs that are more direct and feel less safe. I challenged myself to be more lyrically direct on this album, and I believe I have accomplished that.”

Here’s the first single featuring Hannah Georgas on backing vocals.

Northcote is touring in the early fall with The Glorious Sons. Here are the BC dates.

10/20 Cranbrook, BC – Key City Theatre
10/21 Kelowna, BC – Flashback’s
10/22 Kamloops, BC – Cactus Jack’s
10/23 Vancouver, BC – The Venue
10/24 Victoria, BC – Distrikt

Twisted fingers and happy hearts… Mike Edel released a new song on his soundcloud the other day called “Blue Above The Green.” He says the song is about spring time.

Mike Edel’s new record is called India, Seattle. The Victoria folkster is hitting the road with fellow Island squad Towers & Trees. We’ll get a chance to see Mike Edel on April 9th in Vancouver at The Biltmore and the following nights in Victoria at The Roxy.

And let’s check in with Towers and Trees. Check out this beauty cover of Lana Del Rey’s “West Coast” recorded on The Zone with my best English mate Jon Williams.

April 9th? Is that a Thursday? Maybe I could go to that?

[New Rock Now] Northcote sounded amazing opening for The Gaslight Anthem

Last night was stellar. The Gaslight Anthem performed a sold out show at the Commodore Ballroom.

The place was packed, the energy was high and the music was top shelf.

The band that performed before Gaslight was a group based out of Victoria called Northcote. I’ve known Matt for years as he brought the project into focus. A couple years ago he released his debut self-titled record.

Since then, he has criss-crossed the continent, the UK and Europe performing in the growing folk-punk thing happening right now. He has been out there with Dave Hause, Frank Turner, Chuck Ragan, Billy Pettinger, and The Gaslight Anthem.

And from my radio show the other day….

It is becoming a thing in the NHL this week. Goalies and food stuffs.

Vancouver Canucks’s goaltender, Eddie Lack, is known for his love of the mighty taco. And in Vancouver, there are infinity places to get an amazing taco.

The Vancouver Canucks tweeted that Eddie Lack wouldn’t mind if fans threw tacos on the ice after a game. But that doesn’t sound right…. or is it? Let’s call the Canucks to find up what is real.

I’ve been waking up bright (well dark) and early every morning for a couple weeks now. Training for a charity boxing match on November 22nd. The times are generally good…getting punched in the head sucks, but I guess that’s the point. (I’m the dude in the Expos tank)

Here is one from Washington DC’s Skyline Hotel. Jon and Jeff Lee are brothers…they create dainty pop songs. “Oh My Dear” sounds like a song where the woman says, “it’s not you, it’s me.” And you’re like, “ok.”

Smalltown DJs teamed up with Victoria’s Neon Steve and Shad for a cut called “Bad.” What amazing groove on this cut. And a free download? C’mon!

Kandle
Kandle and The Krooks made the trip over to Victoria for Rifflandia. I couldn’t make the set at the Alix Goolden Hall on Saturday which is a real shame. By trusted accounts, I missed a heck of a show.

Kandle grew up in Victoria before taking off to the bright lights and big city of Montreal. Her record is called In Flames and the current single is “Not Up To Me.”

Find out about Kandle from the Vancouver Sun then hit play on this!

ROCOCODE 2014 by Lynol Lui

Laura Smith is another Victorian who peaced to pursue music…but Laura only took a ferry an hour-and-half East to Vancouver. There she partnered up with Andrew to create music as Rococode. We’ve been following the band for years on The Zone and they return home to visit often for festivals, shows, and sometimes just for Mom’s home-cooking.

Rococode just wrapped Rifflandia and now they are off to Germany for a festival date. Then BACK to Canada for a series of shows.

September 30     Calgary          The Gateway
October 1            Edmonton      The Artery
October 2            Regina           O’Hanlons
October 3            Saskatoon     The Capitolm Music Club
October 4            Altona            Krahn Barn

The current single is called “Banks.”

Last week, both Geoff Lundstrom and Johnny Galactic stopped by The Zone (and Michael Wood Band) for live performances.

Geoff put down a nice cover of The Killers “When You Were Young.”

Before Johnny Galactic performed a song, Jon told this insane story of his girlfriend and the jungles of Brazil.
