Canadian west-coast roots/folk duo Jon and Roy perform tonight at the Alix Goolden Hall…. sold out.  In front of the concert, they stopped by The Zone @ 91-3 for a live performance.  They lay down “Vibrant Scene” from the album Let It Go.  Then they dive into a cover of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold The World.”

Archers

Middle class bad boys and Victoria’s favourite mandolin playing folksters The Archers are getting to work on their next record.  And they have a Indiegogo!

They are hoping to raise $7,000…whatever you can do would be super duper.

What can we expect?

and more videos starring Jon Williams?  Dare to dream is what I always say.

Man, I wish I wasn’t so broke… the guitar lessons package, or the house concert package would both be huge.

Go with yourself. I’d say buy a coupon book, but use the $25 on The Archers.

Towers and Trees

If you’re in a band from Vancouver Island and you don’t have trees on the album cover, you’re doing it wrong.

Towers and Trees make a sound that fans of The Lumineers or The Archers might be able to get behind.  Adrian Chalifour is the principle of the project.  He brought together a collection of some his favourite Victorian musicians for a pretty, fun, well produced, DIY style EP called Broken Record.

A couple songs that caught my ear are:

Your chance to see Towers and Trees will be on a Wednesday, Decembver 12th at…some venue I’ve never heard of…sounds sketchy.  Hit the Facebook page for details. They are collecting food for the Food Bank, so bring some grub to give.

Jon Middleton
Tag this one as Canadian Chill Folk or West Coast Chill Roots…. solo ep from Jon Middleton (Jon & Roy).  Jon’s solo stuff is very pretty and light.  If you took the foot off the gas even further from a typical Jon & Roy song you’d get a pretty good understanding of the ep called … I think its just called EP.

The music is very calm, relaxing and meditative.  If you live in the Rainy Forest Kingdom, or maybe just feel like sometimes you’d like to transport yourself to the world of storms, waves and trees, this is the record to do it.

I like a lot of songs on the EP from this Victorian singer-guitarist…but I like Jon best when he’s singing about nature, reflection, and reconciling that with modern urban living.

The Jon & Roy Holiday special is comingDecember 14th at the Alix Goolden.

Yay! Post 1,000! Thank you for reading.

The first time I met Kandle was back in maybe 2006.  I was at a party at Ryan Rae’s place out in Langford.  One of those backyard shindigs where there is a turkey being deep-fried and people are drinking out of those red solo cups like an American teenage comedy film.

A couple girls walk in and I’m like, “whoa, who are those smoke shows?”  My buddy Razer turns to me and says, “calm down pervert, that Is Coral who is like 16 and her LITTLE sister Kandle.”

“Who lets a 16-year-old come to a party with a bunch of you quasi-employed musicians and sexual predators?”

“They are Neil Osborne‘s kids.”

“oh.”  So that’s my Kandle story… Kandle and Coral have been bouncing around making music as long as I’ve known of them.  They had a band in Victoria called The Blue Violets.  At that point….nope still don’t think they were old enough to hit a club, but I saw them at Evolution for a show case once.  They have powers maaaaaaaaan.  When I was that I age, I had boogers and played D&D.

They grew up and moved away.  I think Coral is in Toronto now doing something with music or TV.  Working on the Stombo Show maybe?  And Kandle is in Montreal making music as…. Kandle.  She lives in Montreal. The blogs and press call her “Montreal.”  I get that, Montreal is neat, she calls it home now…but she is a West Coast kid to me.

Kandle does a cover of the Rolling Stones “Play With Fire” which is all kinds of super-duper.

I like her style…

Victoria’s Warbuck call their sound alternative ambient electronic indie pop.  Listening to their two songer Two (produced with help of Brandon DeLyzer…nice), and I really like the slow climber, sexy “We Can’t Be Touched.”

Warbuck is playing the Moustache Party at Lucky Bar tonight and a fundraiser for Movember (AND featuring a DJ set from me).

I talked on an earlier post about headliners Handsome Distraction….so lets have a listen to the other support band, Citizen Joy.  Groovy, bluesy, vocally driven, jazzy rock & roll.

Victoria’s Hawk and Steel are having a BIG Monday.  The folky, alt-country sounding group are releasing their new album Danger Road today…and playing a show with The Wooden Sky at Club 9one9.

Lots of very pretty and easy songs to listen to on this record.  I’ll start by posting a more upbeat or jaunty jingle.

I like this song as it reminded right away of the Rural Alberta Advantage.  The next song I have for you is a slower one, but to my ear, the slow dances are Hawk and Steel’s best songs.  They borrowed the violin talents of friend-of-the-show, Kiana Brasset.

Beautiful guitar tones build slowly into a big crescendo. Peter Gardner’s whisper-singing drives the narrative as the song builds and swirls.  He doesn’t lash out vocally, letting the bands crash it all down…the song locks into a meditative path of sound and noise in its second half. The song is a standout track to me.  As great as this song sounds on my computer, I can imagine a huge moment at the show tonight.

I am not sure what Jon Baglo‘s job in the band is (maschine industrial beats?) but that dude has been a hero to me on numerous occasions.

If you’re trekking downtown in the rain tonight to see The Wooden Sky, go early enough to make time for Hawk and Steel.

More local Victoria music for you.  Victoria’s Johnny Galactic have a new record out on November 26th called “Keep Off The Grass.”  Fricken hippies man.

Johnny Galactic lay down folky acoustic ballads….slow jams.  They have more than a couple that I like, but I think my favourite is “San Francisco Babe.”  Band features long time homeboy Adam Puritch (Armchair Cynics).

Simple, pretty music.

Capital Rock City is here to party with you… in the ears.  Please take a moment to listen and/or download.

Woke up this morning to a crazy frost. Very pretty in Victoria. And also Tuesday, so that means you can listen to this week’s Capital Rock City.

I play music from Mike Edel, a song I find very romantic and sweet. Also I chat with Ryan from Year of the Rat. Lola Parks shows up and we also hear from a band outta Washington State called Boss & Rand. Horrible album title… but the music is alright.

Looking ahead… I am working on a couple audio projects.

The Zone @ 91-3 is the broadcast best-friend of the Victoria Royals hockey team.  I would like to try and create some audio for the intermission.  Kinda feel out how that might sounds.  And punch up our broadcasts a bit between Marlon’s most excellent call.

November 11th is Remembrance Day and I’ll be on the radio.  I have been reading a book called Vimy by Pierre Berton.  For a non-fiction account of World War, its mighty!  Filled with fun facts of Trench Warfare.  That sounds like an oxymoron… but there are some stunning accounts of combat.  I want to take just one story and try to make it an audio adventure in time for November 11th.

Since I first got into radio in the late 90s, I’ve always wanted to do a history show and more specifically a World War One broadcast.  For some odd reason, I feel like this week is as good as any to get started.

Like so many project, less is more… I found a story that is exciting, short-ish and has a bit of a “huh…” factor that is based on truth.

Capital Rock City #100 is on the horizon, and I am feeling a best of… just playing some old favourite selections from over the years.  CRC began in September of 2005, so there is lots of music to draw from.

That’s all I got.

Thank you for listening. If you like the show, please share it with a friend.

Go with yourself.
