I have been working at the Zone the past few days on a new project called “Hockey! with Jeremy.” My challenge is to create a hockey feature to be broadcast on the radio during the intermission of Victoria Royal‘s hockey games. I have only made two so far (its a lot of work to produce spoken word radio… who knew?).

I have enjoyed the practice thus far… and look forward to trying to create compelling audio and improving my style as the season progresses.  Have a listen to the first two segments.

Mixcloud >> Hockey! with Jeremy – Hockey Sense

“Practice” was fun because I got actually sit on the bench and yap with the boys during a rest in practice.  Plus I had the chance to talk with Kevin Sundher and he is the Royal’s first line stud.

“Hockey Sense” I recorded this morning after practice and I had the chance to interview the boys (and a coach!) as they came off the ice.  I of course caught up with homeboys Jesse Pauls and Brenden Persley again.  But I missed my boy Timmy T who might be the most hilarious Royal I’ve talked with so far.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, November 8th), The Royals are at home against the Edmonton Oil Kings. The PR flaks from the Royals said I might get to sit in the suicide box at ice level and record the sounds of the game.  Nice.  Better bring my helmet.  I might also interview some kids about hockey… so if you’re bringing your kid to the game and see me, say hi so I can put your midget you on the radio.

Go with yourself.

New M83 record is out tomorrow… I hope the iTunes download goes hot tonight, I am going to buy it for sure.  Actually… if Ditch has the vinyl tomorrow… I’d really like that.  I wonder?

Initial reviews have been promising.  I adore the first single “Midnight City.”

Today I have been jamming out track one/side one, “Intro”  Easy right… first song should be called intro.

Pitchfork loves this cut… I’m a little more meh on it… I am sure, in the context of the whole double album, this song serves well.  As a stand alone single or song, it doesn’t have the payoff that I enjoy in a 5 minute ditty.

This is an epic, building, bright cut that you can imagine really crushes down for the next song…  have a listen.  It features vocals from Nika Roza Danilova of Zola Jesus.

Its alright, but not changing my world.  What I did enjoy… M83 remixes!

If I ever get my shit sorted and learn to make beats and samples… I’ll glitch out all night.

Finally made it to a Victoria Royals hockey game.

I brought Mads so I couldn’t stay the whole time… but I will say that Madelyn is finally getting to an age where she can enjoy the process.  She sits in her chair.  Loves to clap.  Pays attention enough to know that Victoria is the “Purple” team (the jersey is more blue-ish but shhhh). Yells “Go ‘Toria!” And loves her treats.

The Royals played the Kelowna Rockets (Grandpa Rob’s team) and gutted out an overtime win!

We also got to see super-stud #9 Kevin Sundher assist a Soudek goal.  He is tied for the top scorer in the WHL right now.  Nice.

I hope that I am fortunate enough to get another pair of tickets to take Madelyn again this season.

In other hockey news… Coral and I will be heading to Van for a game verse CBJ in November.  Fun attack!

It was an eventful weekend.  I kinda like not working my weekends away.  I get that whole mantra that to be successful you gotta be working and creating all.the.time… but I’ll save that Radio Stars of the world.  I’ll take some pleasure in a glorious Fall hike.

My brother CJ is turning into a true weekend warrior on the trail.  I had to miss out so much on the hikes because of work, but this weekend was about living Island Time and having fun.  CJ and Caitlin and I hit Gowlland Tod Park for an “easy” assent up to a lookout that offered an amazing picnic spot.  We spied the Saanich Inlet and Malahat Mountain.

I kinda want to do it again next weekend… but I think CJ already has designs on East Sooke.  Though, my bro will need a rain coat as we won’t always be so lucky to hike in the glorious sun in our temperate rain forest.

Do you have any favourite hiking spots that are an easy drive from the city?

Go with yourself.

So…. how about that Canucks game the other night?

Right, so it didn’t end the way Disney told me it would… and then the riots downtown.

But here I am, the day after hockey, and I feel pretty good.  Canucks had an amazing year, game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final… and come October, we do it again.

I woke up today after a terrible sleep to a wonderful day.  I thought, “oh right, its pretty much summer now.”

I watched TV shows about medieval cathedrals in France and a show where they renovate backyards and I glanced up form the TV for a moment and it was day time.  Fuck.  I managed to sleep for maybe 3 hours.  I’ll sleep well tonight. And I am thinking I am getting sick? Summer sick?  Lame.

Tomorrow I buy sound equipment for my wedding DJ company.  I wanted to head down to Long & McQuade and make sure its all moving forward, and while there… bought a ukulele.

I’ve now owned this beast for about 3 hours as of writing this blog, and I love it.  Ryan Awram told me that his friend took a 12 week ukulele course and she is loving it and can play it pretty good now.  I wonder….

That’s all I got.  Go with yourself.

Win or lose, we sure have had a fun and exciting Stanley Cup playoff run in British Columbia.

The boys have the historic opportunity tonight to win the Canucks’ first ever championship in franchise history. Its kind of a surreal feeling as I’ve cheered on the team for so many years and here we are.  A couple kicks at the can.

Maybe they win, maybe they don’t… but it will be one hell of night.

I created today’s audio-montage to celebrate all the series clinchers (Chicago, Nashville & San Jose) and game winners from the Boston Bruins series.  The song is called “O Fortuna” and you’ll recognize it as a classic.  I hope you enjoy.

Go with yourself.

Game 5

Its never easy being a Canucks fan. Game 4 was a challenge.  Its like the team can’t just be content with losing, there needs to be a complete collapse.  And because the rest of the world hate the Nucks, when they lose this bad, the vultures come out.

But all hope is not lost in this Canucks fan.  The Canucks have been rocked before, and they have prevailed!  To bring some inspiration I cobbled together these clips.

Yesterday I put my Canucks sweater on and made my way down to Soprano’s for the Canucks Fan Video shoot.

Alex, Chika and Jefe organized a bunch of Canucks fans to come together and make a video to put on Youtube.  It was good times standing on stage with other fans and cheers to their Canucks song.  A parody to the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s “Dani California.”  The video will be online tomorrow (in theory) before game 1 of the Canucks and Bruins Stanley Cup final.  Have a listen to the song below.

Can you believe it?  The Canucks aced the Sharks in the NHL Western Conference Final and will be heading to the Stanley Cup vs… ? Bruins? Lightning?

To celebrate I jammed out a little Canucks audio montage to relive the magic.  The song threaded throughout is Devotchka‘s “How It Ends.”

Best of 1

Looking forward to some hockey tonight.

Whenever the situation seems most dire, I like to turn to my man Coach Taylor for some inspiration.  I try to imagine AV says something sorta poetic before the Canucks step onto the ice.  But then if he did… would we be headed to game 7?
