Victoria’s Warbuck call their sound alternative ambient electronic indie pop.  Listening to their two songer Two (produced with help of Brandon DeLyzer…nice), and I really like the slow climber, sexy “We Can’t Be Touched.”

Warbuck is playing the Moustache Party at Lucky Bar tonight and a fundraiser for Movember (AND featuring a DJ set from me).

I talked on an earlier post about headliners Handsome Distraction….so lets have a listen to the other support band, Citizen Joy.  Groovy, bluesy, vocally driven, jazzy rock & roll.

My goodness… Arkells just wrapped a tour and their “thank you” to us, the fans… a beauty free download of a song they cut with Lights (who they toured with?  weird… wonderful).  Check out this alternate take on “Book Club” from the album Michigan Left. Then fist pump your nearest bro… this song is good.

The other night I went to pick Coral up from work.  I had the radio punched up to 101.9 FM CFUV which sometimes…. is truly great.  They had a world music show on…all sorts of wonderful songs.  The host was jazzed to play some new Jimmy Cliff.  The legendary Jamaican reggae performer put out Rebirth earlier in the summer.  His first record in 8 years.  The album features Tim Armstrong of Rancid fame… The host played “One More” (which is what Coral shazzammed to let us know what we were grooving to) and a Clash cover of “Guns of Brixton.”

Coral and I downloaded a couple songs…but you know, I needed MORE reggae music in my life, so other day…had to get the record.  Pretty solid.  I really enjoyed the Rancid cover that makes the disc.  “Ruby Soho.”

Victorian, former Zone Band of the Month, Peak Performance Top 5 finishers, stud, Mike Edel is coming home.

Mike and his band have caravanned across this giant nation during some hard months.  He’ll be in Victoria for a show on Friday, November 30th at Lucky Bar.  The next night in Vancouver at the Media Club.

Then some sun!  He tours the Western USA… including Reno?  Yes, even Reno…the biggest little city in the WORLD!  let’s hit play on this jam and make out.

Canadian fun-rocker power poppers Hollerado are putting out a new record in February called White Paint.  The boys in Hollerado are giving us more of what made them popular with Record in a Bag… fun, upbeat, catchy modern rock.  Song has the positive rock vibe which permeates through modern rock… I guess with a Democrat in the White House, we get treated to four more years of happy jams.

Hollerado falls into that space of popular music that has a more traditional rock & roll vibe.  Song has some boogy, it’s propulsive, and its fun without the obvious reference to “Foster The People” (which seems to be a common touch-point for bands right now sending in tunes to compare themselves to).

Hollerado just wrapped a tour with Passion Pit…if you were lucky enough to see that live, then probably you can agree when I say that Hollerado is a good times show.

New Frightened Rabbit will be available in February.  The record is called Pedestrian Verse and you can pre-order by hitting the website.   The Scottish emotive types have a song for us to check out and a new video.   I follow Scott Hutchinson on Instagram (@owljon) he takes lots of pictures of crazy & vintage signs,  recording, and generally life on the road.   The music video seems to reflect that aesthetic.

Solid Frighten Rabbit single.  Might need some repeat listens to rise up in the pantheon of great FR songs.

Victoria’s Hawk and Steel are having a BIG Monday.  The folky, alt-country sounding group are releasing their new album Danger Road today…and playing a show with The Wooden Sky at Club 9one9.

Lots of very pretty and easy songs to listen to on this record.  I’ll start by posting a more upbeat or jaunty jingle.

I like this song as it reminded right away of the Rural Alberta Advantage.  The next song I have for you is a slower one, but to my ear, the slow dances are Hawk and Steel’s best songs.  They borrowed the violin talents of friend-of-the-show, Kiana Brasset.

Beautiful guitar tones build slowly into a big crescendo. Peter Gardner’s whisper-singing drives the narrative as the song builds and swirls.  He doesn’t lash out vocally, letting the bands crash it all down…the song locks into a meditative path of sound and noise in its second half. The song is a standout track to me.  As great as this song sounds on my computer, I can imagine a huge moment at the show tonight.

I am not sure what Jon Baglo‘s job in the band is (maschine industrial beats?) but that dude has been a hero to me on numerous occasions.

If you’re trekking downtown in the rain tonight to see The Wooden Sky, go early enough to make time for Hawk and Steel.

John O from Diamond Rings stopped by The Zone Afternoon Show for a LIVE studio performance in front of his show TONIGHT at Club 9one9 with Gold & Youth.

Good rockers don’t go away, they just change their band name.  Daniel Sioui was in the most excellent Vancouver post-punk band All State Champion.  That morphed into Carpenter with members of By A Thread, Speaking of Heroes, and Daggermouth.

Some fond Victoria memories are going to see All State and later Carpenter shows.  I remember seeing Carpenter at Logan’s a few times… going with my brother CJ, meeting up with Coral (BEFORE WE WERE MARRIED! SWA?) and hanging with Razer.

The other day I blogged about By A Thread playing a show in Chicago, and that night I dug through some old bins of compact discs and pulled out some favourites. This morning, driving my 4-year-old to pre-school she was meowing about wanting to hear songs (she just doesn’t get The Current yet) so I popped in my Carpenter Town and Country ep.  My kid, god bless her… knows music only from the radio, vinyl, or youtube so she thought the CDs were pretty bizarre. “Oh cool, you have mini records!”  That was a trip.

The brought me to the wormhole of the internet… searching for Carpenter to see if those guys are still operating.  and would you look at that, a post YESTERDAY on their Facebook.

Daniel has a new project called Precursor and it definitely scratches that Vancouver post-whatever itch.

Gosh darn… that’s good.

Bands send all sorts of stories over the email to get you to hit play on their streams.  Today’s was one of the weirder.

Meet Norwegian Arms.

Philadelphian Brendan Mulvihill traveled to Siberia with a mandolin and a Vampire Weekend record and hung out with the wolves for a year. (Brendan, the flights to Edmonton have to be cheaper than Siberia).

Came back to the States with a sea of Siberian gulag tales and hopped in the studio with Dr. Dog’s Eric Slick.  The result is a Vampire-ish Weekend sounding record where they sing about Soviet Russia instead of The Hamptons.  Neat.

Its a little off beat, rustic, weird, pretty, interesting. Songs about a time and a place and an adventure.
