New Offspring will be coming to the Zone on Friday (if it doesn’t leak sooner.)  The record and single are called “Days Go By.”

Offspring – “Days Go By” (clip)

Hard to say whether I love this new song or not based on 30 seconds… I mean, its Offspring.  I haven’t loved them as a band since I was 15… but I do have a fond nostalgia for being 15.  So its all good Offspring.

Smash was a monster record if you were into rock and roll in the 90s.  I mostly remember it being played in the dressing room before and after hockey games.  It sound tracked a lot of parties.  By Ixnay on the Hombre I was a fan and to this day, I consider “Gone Away” my favourite Offspring song.  It was the Ixnay tour when I first got a chance to see them live.

I’ll say I have guarded optimism for the new record.

This is a picture of the Quadra Village…starting to feel like summer.

I went for a baby hike on Saturday during some down time at Mount Doug.  It started to smell and when I rounded a corner… ewwww, swamp!

Whatever, I’m a man, I walked through mud.  NBD.

Go with yourself.

This is a picture of a fountain. I love fountains.  I went to Tuscany Village last night to meet a wedding couple at a Starbucks.  It was so busy I got my Chai, found a patio umbrella and sat in the rain by a fountain.  If/when I win lotto max… my home will have a fountain in a courtyard. You can come over any time.  We’ll drink Chai.

Today, no rain… Friday sunshine…then DJing at Veneto Lounge.  So I need a Friday lounge jam that says tropics, cocktails and friendship.  Pretty much the holy trinity of good times.  Low-and-behold… Vampire Weekend‘s Chris Baio fancies himself a beat monger and is releasing an ep under his DJ name, simply Baio.  And it is a big fat check mark in sharpie on all of the above.  Lets have a listen.

Baio – “Tanto”

I dig it. I can get down to this I think….pass the Cachaça.

My girl Delna moved to Vancouver a few years ago from Victoria.  I still cyber-stalk her on the intsagram and follow along on her life.  One thing I noticed her taking pictures of was motorcycles.  She always seems to be in the shop learning how to repair bikes (and maybe restoring her own too?).

I asked her about it and she told me about a Motorcycle Community Repair Shop called Motomethod.  You pay a fee to rent a bay and work on your own bike.  Sounds like the perfect solution for an urban hipster living in a apartment or condo.  Since we all can’t have giant garages out in the ‘burbs.

OK, so we need something street, something East Van…

We have been watching lots of Sons of Anarchy lately.  Coral and her sister are obsessed.  Alyx has all the seasons and got Coral into it, now its on at our house all the time.

I have been enjoying the show.  There are some silly bits like how their club is called ANARCHY but they vote on everything.  Opie keeps telling his wife that everything he does is for the family then proceeds to murder people and spend time in jail…not really Dad of the year type stuff. But the show is entertaining and filled with drama.

Also, for a motorcycle show, show more motorcycles!

We’re all broke but Coral and Alyx keep talking about getting motorcycles.  They want little sport bikes… I like the older motorcycles.  I blogged a few years ago about wanting a Harley Nightster which looks like a vintage motorcycle.

But my tastes have changed and now I think I’d actually want something vintage.

My first car was a 1969 Triumph Spitfire… and Triumph made motorcycles.  (Well different parent company, same brand…its a long British Industry story)

I’ll have to do more research… but Wikipedia says the 1969 Triumph was one of their best years for bikes!  That has to mean something right?  The pictures on the internet of both restored and modified Triumphs look cool.  So I dig it.

ANYWAYS…who cares about motorcycles… music.

Sons of Anarchy, like any modern TV show worth its airtime has an interesting soundtrack using both familiar, undiscovered and cover songs to help tell the story.  We’re still in season one, but this song the other night was great.  Subtle, but great.

Lyle Workman & The Forest Rangers – “Fortunate Son” (CCR cover)

Download MP3 >> Lyle Workman & The Forest Rangers – Fortunate Son

This song shows up in Season One, Episode 9; Hell Followed. The original of course… the classic 1969 Creedence Clearwater Revival jam off Willy and the Poor Boys. 1969?  Whoa….

“He asked me not to go so fast!” wails Brittany Howard, lead singer of Georgia’s Alabama Shakes.  When I first dropped the needle on the “Heavy Chevy” 45, I thought maybe I hit 78… the song is classic sounding rave-up that spins fast.

Alabama Shakes – “Heavy Chevy”

Flipping the record over reveals not one, but TWO b-sides.

Alabama Shakes – “Pocket Change”

“Pocket Change” slows it down… sounds like a cover to me, but that is because the whole Alabama Shakes schtick is retro…so I never know when they’re playing an original or covering some forgotten or classic 60s jam.

Alabama Shakes – “Mama”

We turn the energy back up for “Mama.”  I love the guitar tones off the top of this song.

This 45 showed up at the Zone today so I thought I’d share the sounds with you.

The title track to fun’s record Some Nights is an interesting song. There is a lot that goes on during this song which admittedly sometimes turns me off.  But other times, I really like the positive vibe and pounding drums.  Coral thinks it sounds like a marching band or drum line.

fun. – “Some Nights”

Nate Ruess messes around with the auto-tune at one point in the song. That is bizarre considering the rest of the harmonies are very pretty.  But then he starts wanking off with the auto-tune.  Whatever, he’s the rock star, and its a number 1 record so he must have it figured out.

Lyrically its a very uplifting song and for whatever reason makes me happy.

Bossman Johnny came to our music meeting at the Zone on Wednesday with an artist he was really fired up on.  It is hard to say wether a song and style like this will end up on The Zone… but man, I love it.

The artist is Ben Howard.  He is a 24-ish folky type from the UK that channels a whole lot of Damien Rice.  That was the first thread I pulled out of his style and it immediately  gave me a positive vibe toward him.

Trolling his wikipedia I read that his music has shown up on the TV show House (Johnny’s favourite, so now I know where he got idea to jam out some Ben Howard).  John said he was going to buy the record and I thought… on Johnny’s excitement, I’d do the same. John played for us the feature song “The Wolves.”

Ben Howard – “The Wolves”

The song is very pretty and emotional.  The perfect chill out record to throw on and drift away to.

The other song John played for us was “Only Love.”

Ben Howard – “Only Love”

This song has just a little more punch and reminds me a bit of maybe John Butler Trio.  The guitars turn up just a little and get a growl in them.  Lots of groove and maybe an ounce of swagger.

The record is very much an easy listening experience.  And Ben is not rewriting the world of folk.  But he is pretty good and the music just sounds nice.  Uplifting.

Another song I like is…

Ben Howard – “Keep Your Head Up”

Its schmaltzy… but whatever, I like the positive vibe.

Maybe you’ll find your new favourite singer-songwriter after sampling these songs.  I bought the record and so far… I am enjoying it.  Time will tell if I go back to this record when I am feeling like falling asleep to music or just settle back on Damien Rice’s 9…. or 0.

Today is National Grilled Cheese Day!  Wow.  Actually is Grilled Cheese Month… I am so thankful as a society we have our priorities set.

The grilled cheese sandwich is pretty much a basic staple of our North American culture… but did you know?  people have been eating bread and cheese since the olden tymes?

Its true! Like most things delicious (olives, Russel Crowe, sandals), the grilled cheese sandwich originated in ancient Rome.

The Grilled Cheese we enjoy came about in the good ole USA in the 1920 when two great innovations took place.

Cheap American cheese
and Sliced Bread

The grilled cheese is awesome and something I always play with at home.  I don’t normally hit a restaurant for it… but after watching Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, I have started to appreciate what can be done.  I remember one episode form a season or two ago when Guy hit Portland, Oregon and went to the Blueplate Lunch Counter.  They do up a fine grilled cheese and tomato soup!

Today, I went down to The Black Hat Bistro in downtown Victoria to talk to chef Sam Chalmers.  I asked him how to make the BEST grilled cheese sandwich. Please have a listen.

and if you like it, maybe you’ll share the link on your blog or facebook/twiiter thing…or like Pinterest?  sure. and thank you.

Always a fun list at the end of the music year is the “Worst Album Covers” list.  I think I have my first contender for 2012.

The artist is called Nash.  He is a one man band that plays all the instruments himself and tracks it.  I guess he also does his own graphic design?  Yikes.  I have to believe this is an inside joke that is hilarious to someone.  I like the arctic too man, and I love Polar Bears!  So we have that Nash, we have that.

Nash – “Taken Away”

The record company describes the suburban Montrealer as Spoon-esque.  I’ll believe it.  Its a jangly happy tune.

From Montreal we head west and cross the Ottawa River to Ottawatown to hear something kinda neat.  French modern rock.  The Balconies have a song called “Kill Count.”  They cut two versions… one en anglais and one en francais.

The french version is different in that well… most all the music we hear is in English.  I wonder how a familiar sound will come across in another language?

The Balconies – “Kill Count”

The beauty of this song is that when I play it in my little work cubicle people wander by and ask “what’s that?” in a positive tone.

Not like the time I played Trans Siberian Orchestra… the “WHAT’S THAT?!?” was less friendly.

Canucks in 5.

Zone copy writer and resident Canucks fan Caleb Kirby turned us on to a song from a California band called The Silent Comedy.

This DIY indie folk band had a song called “Bartholomew” featured in the 2011 video game Dark Souls.  It has that Americana turn-of-the-century chain gang vibe.  I read one comment on youtube where the listener thought they could hear the rail-spikes being driven in to the beat!  I don’t know if that’s true but I want to believe.
