Paper-Towns-Quad

Coral and I fired up Paper Towns last night. Movie was alright…straight white male/female fantasy goobly gook. Super dorks land the hot girls because they see their inner beauty. There’s a road trip…and Ron from the Walking Dead is less annoying as Ron from Orlando.

Soundtrack was fun. Coral and I loved the “Lady in Red” elevator music when model and main dork went up a tower to get a view of the city and shared a moment.

The end of the film featured Twin Shadow.

Does that song not sound like it was written to be in a John Green film?

The film was fine. It was cute and served as a great Monday night watch for us. After listening to Twin Shadow, what I really craved was Volcano Choir. So I dusted off Repave, and put “Byegone” on repeat.

My god that song is so good.

Foster the people
Foster the People shared a new song today…and it’s a FREE download…back with the cut “Ruby.”

The song is called “The Unforeseeable Fate of Mr. Jones.”  Sadly, not a cover of Counting Crows “Mr. Jones.” Drat. Next time right Mark?

The single is backed with “Ruby.” An old b-side from a record store day 7-inch from a few years ago. Pretty song.

And you can help Foster the People battle teen bullying in Japan if you’re into it.

Krisp

Consequence of Sound featured a new chillwave song and I had to check it out.

The band is from Miami and they are called Krisp.

The song is mellow, light boogy, tropically tinged chillwaver.

Their new record is called Sonic Monarch and comes out in January.

Thinking of holidays in Vancouver between the winter rain storms. Nice.

I was reflecting on the year that was in music and put together a couple mixes. The first one is some of favourite songs and records of 2015.

2015 was a year of change for my family. We moved from Victoria to Vancouver. And for the first part of the year I lived in the city by myself, commuting back to the Island on weekends. I spent a lot of time listening to records commuting on the skytrain or on the ferry. When I was with the family, we always had something playing on the car stereo on our adventures and road trips.

Not sure what record I listened to the most…. Kurt Vile, FIDLAR, Beach Slang (and weirdly Waters) were all played a ton. Catfish too come to think of it.

This list is mostly stuff I listened to between headphones. I think I should make another list of what got blasted in the car, it would sound a little different (more Imagine Dragons and Modest Mouse and Ryan Adams).

And then I wanted to reflect on some of favourite songs I cranked at CFOX after a year at the station. It was a fun year. Hit some great shows, festivals, adventures with my family, and getting back into the grind of living in a bigger city. Plus the challenge of trying to elevate my radio performance in a competitive market. Great times. Here’s the soundtrack.

Assistant Program Director Dustin Collins called the set, “Delicious & Rich.”

metz

METZ have a video for their song “Spit You Out” from their 2015 record II.

The thrilling, frenetic video, directed by the band and edited by Scott Cudmore (“The Swimmer,” “Wasted,” “Wet Blanket”), features effects-laden live footage and presents a visceral representation of the band’s sound and deft power in performance.

Looks pretty good and sounds great.

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen the Toronto punkers live…but I do remember that live show being the experience that demanded I pay attention to the hype. So great.

pais focus
“I wanna be razor sharp. I wanna be crystal clear.”

P’aris taps Willa to lend some vocals to the pop jam “Focus.”

P’aris in the email about the song.

Focus’ is a song about two people experiencing the loss of a pregnancy. There’s a very particular type of gentle empathy that both partners must offer each other when going through a miscarriage. It’s a strange type of loss, especially from a pragmatic standpoint – you haven’t so much lost something as you have lost the idea of something. So in a way you’re mourning the loss of control over your own future, control over your body, your biology. And you’re also faced with the fact that you have failed at the one thing humans exist on earth to do. ‘Focus’ is about making sure the relationship doesn’t suffer while you’re each processing things in your own way.

And the last time we talked about Willa on MAS.

Last Gang

Astrocolor is a musical collective from Victoria who have come together for a nice Christmas vibe this year. Their debut record from Last Gang is called Lit Up…and it is the perfect dubbed out easy listen to throw on the turntable with a mulled wine and your indoor electrical fireplace “crackling.”

The bio reads like an all-star team of Victoria musicians.

Lit Up was co-produced by Astrocolor and Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Dan Mangan, Ladyhawk, AC Newman). While primarily instrumental, it also features choice vocal moments from a collection of the band’s friends – Kandle, Rykka, Antonia Freybe-Smith, and Abi Rose.

Based in Victoria, BC, Astrocolor is Andrew Poirier (guitar), Anand Greenwell (saxophone), Chris Mackenzie (drums), William Farrant (bass), and Piers Henwood (guitar). With additional programming and instrumentation by Matt Lyall, the Righteous Rainbows of Togetherness, and Jason Cook.

This cut features Antonia who we know from so many great bands in Victoria. Most notalby Jets Overhead.

And they have some beauty instrumentals…..

Getting some good reviews too!

This sounds nice. Bryce Dessner of The National composed a song for the Leonardo DiCaprio film The Revenant.  The movie that may or may not feature a Bear Rape scene comes out on Christmas day.

Vancouver in November

Late November in Vancouver? Not bad…not bad.

I got a cover song for you today. Atlas Genius covering The Weeknd’s friend-zone anthem, “The Hills.”

David-Bowie-Blackstar

The new David Bowie song “Blackstar” is a 10 minute jazz-tronica adventure. The lead single from Bowie’s 25th record comes out on January 8th, 2016. His 69th birthday.

Legend says that back in 2014 David Bowie was invited to a little jazz lounge in New York City’s West Village. A place called the 55 Bar. Bowie went there in 2014 to check out Donny McCaslin’s quartet of exploratory jazz. He sat near the stage, enjoyed the performance and ghosted without a word to anyone. 10 days later he asked for Donny and the drummer to join him in the studio and away they went on what would be “Blackstar.”

The almost 69-year-old artist was inspired by a diverse range of folks for this record. Kendrick Lamar, Death Grips, Board of Canada…and even features percussion from LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.

Yesterday on Drex Live, I was talking to Drex about the new music and we both agreed that the work is challenging. But then a listener form LA named Isaac called up to say that song is a “masterpiece” threaded with imagery that talks about theology, good, evil, and the anti-Christ.

First off….the whole concept of the five-pointed star is important.

He then specifically mentions how interesting the three crucified scarecrows are to the music video.

scarcrows

He says the whole concept of the video talks about god and the anti-Christ.

Whoa….what is the village of Orman?

I have to watch this video again.
