Rob Severyn from Sony Records stopped by the radio factory. He is in Victoria in support of the Brad Paisley tour…but before the country night at the arena, Rob wanted to talk alternative radio jammers from Sony.
One song Rob said we should check out is the new Walk The Moon single, “Shut Up and Dance.”
The Cincinnati band had one of the “songs of the summer” back in 2011. The sleeper hit “Anna Sun.”
Their new record is called Talking Is Hard and comes out in December.

Scottish rockers We Were Promised Jetpacks will have a new record called Unravelling released on October 6th.
The press release from FatCat speaks to the themes of the album. “Many of the lyrics within conjure the notion of a conflicted protagonist struggling to keep his life on course, while battling a creeping sense of uncertainty and impending doom.”

Wayward are from Leeds, UK and feature the vocals of Beth Aggett on this chill house song, “Belize.”
The song dances along on a beautiful piano hook. The keys are layered on top of a chill house beat. The song sounds like it is about a woman who loses her lover to wanderlust and travel. Too bad she could go too. I’d love to go to Belize.

“Every music bloggers favourite; VÉRITÉ …”
What of it Junkyard Music? I love Verite so much.
The latest from the NYC based singer is a stompy one called “Echo.”
And her first single is called “Strange Enough.”
The Scientists of Sound have some more Verite.
***
While trolling soundcloud a couple nice songs showed up on a “People Who Played ‘Strange Enough’ Also Played” list… Neat.
“I fucked her every Wednesday evening…” whoa.

The Rifflandia after party at Distrikt Nightclub featured an alterna-pop performer from Vancouver named Willa. She was captivating on stage. Huge sound, perfect voice.
Since that show…I’ve been seeing her name pop up more and more on my social media feeds as folks-in-know start to discover her sounds.
Willa is working with Ryan Guldemond, Nettwerk, The Agency Group…so basically all the heavyweights in the Canadian-Content Industry.
Willa is still working on that debut album and finding a US record label….while she’s on that, a song was posted!
And some shows (and ZOMG! That Vegas show is on my 5-year wedding anniversary..and me and the Mrs. got hitched in Vegas!)
10/05 Seattle, WA – Sunset Tavern
10/06 Portland, OR – Bossanova Ballroom
10/08 San Francisco, CA – Milk Bar
10/09 San Diego, CA – Bar Pink
10/10 Los Angeles, CA – Hotel Café
10/11 Las Vegas, NV – Beauty Bar

Yelawolf‘s new record won’t be out till 2015…but his song “Till It’s Gone” showed up a couple weeks ago on Sons of Anarchy. Listening to the lyrics…it sure sounds like a song written to show up during a montage on SOA.

And I share my latest episode of Fact Checking The Morning Zone.
I appreciate you taking the time to check out my blog or hitting the songs on Hype Machine.

Quick!!! How many songs about the the 1988 film Willow can you name?
Zero?
Well now you can claim to know one.
From Vancouver’s You Big Idiot comes this little slice of modern-classic-late-90s-sounding punk.
And one inspired by Hook.
“Happy thoughts are all I’ve got.”
Nice, nice, very nice.

Your friendly neighbourhood music blogger/DJ has signed up for a charity boxing event! I am taking part in Fight 4 The Cause. Studio 4 Athletics in Victoria takes 22 men & women who have never fought in a real boxing match and over eight weeks, whips them into fight condition. Then on November 22nd they throw a formal boxing gala at the Victoria Conference Center and we fight in our first sanctioned fight. The event will likely raise $20,000 to $30,000 for a host of local charities including the local Fire Fighters charitable organization and the food bank.
Watch this video. Whoa.
Now, I am a lifer DJ…so this is turning out to be quite the feat as I scrape 34 years of inactive plaque from my muscles, bones and joints. It has been a great time getting up at 6AM and getting punched. Basically most of my life has been listening to records and drinking beer specials at music clubs (and letting the bouncers deal with the fights).
Thank you to The Zone @ 91-3 in Victoria for sponsoring me! (where I work).
Now… I need you!
Before I enter the ring on November 22nd they show a little video (working on something that should be magical. Can’t wait to share with you)…. but I also need an entrance song.
Some ideas thrown around….
Interpol – “Twice As Hard” (RIGHT!?! THIS boxing video is my life right except picture a pear-shaped white nerd instead of these hard bodies)
Pantera – “Walk” (Maybe a little MMA bro for me…but 14-year-old Jeremy still has a heart of Pantera)
Fall out Boy? Oh gawd…
I need YOU! If you have a boxing entrance theme idea, please throw me a comment. I want to know what you think would be rad.
Something energetic, something hilarious, or I also like the idea of vibe or indie sounding dissonance.
Go with yourself.

Summertime is holding on here on Vancouver Island I am loving it. Fall is always a great time in Pacific North West…before the rains come.

Cold War Kids will release their 5th record, Hold My Home, on October 21st. The feature single on The Zone is called “All This Could Be Yours.” Quality song….but man oh man, I am feeling the song “First.”
“First you get hurt. Then you feel sorry.”
