Band is called Palmedo. Fun sound for sure. They seem pretty new to the scene…just a handful of followers on twitter and couple thousand plays on soundcloud. The band says their style might remind you of BROODS? Sure..I think they sound a little brighter. Not bad…I’ll hit play on this.

Finally found a few moments to jam out a blog on a Tuesday. I don’t know about you, but I go through pretty much everyday in a state of overwhelmededness. Wake up, strap in, and ride that pony till bedtime. Repeat.

I took a couple days off at the end of this week to hit the Tall Tree Festival…so I do have my eye on that prize.

Earlier today I was trolling the charts of some modern rock radio stations in the States. Here are a few songs that caught my ear. In no order.

We’ll starts with a couple bros from Columbus, Ohio (Go Blue Jackets!) called Twenty One Pilots, and their emo tale of having their car radio stolen.  Poor little duders. Catchy jingle. I wanted to hate it, but kept hitting play on it.

The War on Drugs are starting to gain a little radio traction with their single “Red Eyes” off their 2014 record Lost in the Dream.

This one is from a guy named Max Frost. Reminds me of a slightly more eclectic Fitz and the Tantrums? maybe?

From Sydney, Australia… its Panama (the band…not the nation).

Australians are so hot right now…The GRISWOLDS singing about having the fun sucked out of them? sexual? or vampire?

Hozier gets all serious out at the end. “I was born sick but I love it.” Thanks Irish guy.

That’s what i got, go with yourself.

Came across this remix of Foster The People’s “Best Friend” by the producer/DJ person Dim Sum. They didn’t write too much in the email and their Facebook is pretty to the point. I guess we’ll just enjoy the tune and not worry Dim Sum as a person. I think he’s French?

Alt-J unleashed a new single today. The song is from their upcoming record This is All Yours (September 22nd). The song is called “Hunger in the Pine.” Features a sample of Miley Cyrus? Sure. Party in the UK!

I was reading Consequence of Sound who were listening to NPR and lifted this little bit a background from keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton, “composed entirely of new and spontaneous ideas that arose during writing sessions for the second album. It was written very quickly using some guitar chords and sounds being layered on Ableton, and seemed to signal a bit of a new sound for us. The lyrics mainly suggest the idea that missing someone — pining — can be a physical pain much like hunger.

A few listens in, I like it.

The Tribe has returned from a great adventure to Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula. Their tourism board has partnered with The Zone to give away a trip. The promotion is called Get Off The Rock.

All week at 4:10 (2:10 on Friday)…I’ll be playing an excerpt from Madelyn’s Adventure Journal and then asking you an easy trivia question based on what you heard. Get it right, and you’re in the draw for a trip to the North West.

lake crescentThe prize will be like the trip my family took (but the value will be based on a trip for 2).

Our adventure began at the Black Ball Ferry in Victoria’s harbour. We drove the car on and took the boat across. We arrived in PA and hit the Safeway for provisions (when you’re out in the Olympic National Park you are far from a grocery store…) What? $7.99 for a 6-pack of Deschutes Mirror Ale? OK, better get two.

We had crepes at La Belle Creperie…right in the vortex of Port Angeles.

Then it was off to Lake Crescent and an easy hike up to Marymere Falls. My wife Coral and I had no problem wrangling our 6-year-old and a baby along the trail. A bit of a climb right at the end, but some cardio is good and there is a waterfall at the end. If you got the time…spend some time at the lake. The water is turquoise! We didn’t get a chance to eat at the Lodge at Storm King, but all the locals talked about a new chef and the greatly improved menu with a focus on local.

The we cut hard across the peninsula to end up at Kalaloch Lodge. Wow.

kalaloch
Huge sandy beach that stretches for miles. Intertidal marine life. Rain forest. Beach fires. Good times.

We checked in to a cabin that overlooked the ocean. Dinner was at the lodge. Good food, great beer selection.

The next morning was exploration on the beach and then breakfast at the lodge before making our way to Hoh Rain Forest.

hoh rain forestHoh Rain Forest will remind many of us Islanders of the forest in our neighbourhood…just more medieval. It rains a bunch there…so pack your gumboots.

We found some coffees on the road into the forest at the Hard Rain Cafe. Also an excellent selection of stickers.

After our rain forest hike we took the family into Forks for lunch. Madelyn and I hit the Logger Museum. She had a great time looking at all the olden days stuff. Then we headed west to La Push.

Our resort in La Push was similar to Kalaloch. A cabin by the sea.  The place is called Quileute Oceanside Resort. It is a collection of cabins right along first beach. Our standard cabin had a couple bedrooms, lots of space for my wife, the kids, and myself!

Make sure you spring the $5 for a fire permit! Nothing like s’mores on the beach while watching the surfers.

la push
We drove our car to the trailhead at Second Beach and wandered down. Lots of stairs, you’ll get the heart beat up for sure, but we managed with the kids.

Dinner was back in Forks for us. There is a little store, but not much in the way of a town. So pack in some food or drive the 20 minutes into Forks. We ate pizza at Pacific Pizza. Deschutes on tap? Yum.

On to day 3! We drove back across the peninsula to Port Angeles to Adventures Through Kayaking for a tour of Freshwater Bay.

Kayaking twoOur guide David was amazing with Madelyn. We saw all sorts of sea life including an otter! At one point…we beached the kayaks to explore the beach during low tide.

A highlight of the weekend for sure.

Then we were off to the small village of Joyce for a burger at the Blackberry Cafe, and maybe a slice of home-made pie. Finally a tour of their 103-year-old General Store and the town’s museum.

What a trip! While waiting in line for the ferry we hopped over to the Feiro Marine Life Center. It is right beside the Blackball Ferry Terminal in Port Angeles and a great way to wait for the boat. Madelyn loved exploring their pools of salt-water marine life.

If you are fortunate to win this trip from The Zone, you are in for one heck of an adventure. We’re already excited to head back.

Details of the contest are HERE.

I must apologise for the border around my Instagram of Jesse Roper…I read on the internet yesterday that that is not cool any more. Hey internet, I didn’t know! There really ought to be a guide on how to conduct yourself on the information superhighway.

Jesse Roper stopped by the show yesterday to talk some V.I.C. Fest, his new Indie GoGo campaign and to play us a couple songs. His Stevie Ray Vaughan cover is a good time.

No
Trolling some US alternative radio charts for a few radio gems. Here are a few that caught my year.

Let’s start with the band NO. The California group ended up at Rifflandia last year (pictured above when I tracked them down for an interview.)

“we make some noise in a room and call it art.”

I like it…big, brooding, dark, jangly indie rock. NO.

Coral heard this one on the Alt Nation on Sirius XM and really liked it. The band is Magic Man. The New England band have a record coming out in July called Before the Waves. We’ll file this under fun anthemic pop. They are looking forward to a tour with Youngblood Hawke, Panic at the Disco and Walk The Moon. That sounds like they’ll be in good company.

Florida’s Hot Water Music has new tunes? Neat.

HWM lead singer guy Chuck Ragan is part of the National Lampoon’s European Adventure with friends of the show Billy The Kid and Northcote. Also neat.

Folk-Punk is a thing now eh?

I’ll wrap today with some EDM form Dillon Francis.  His joint with Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs.

And his remix of Chromeo because Chromeo is so hot right now. Red hot.

All week I have V.I.C. Fest artists stopping by to talk about the festival going down this Saturday at St. Ann’s Academy Grounds.

Part of the event features a Song Writers Session where professional musicians critique songs from people who are brave enough to perform. One member of the panel is Kathryn Calder.

Kathryn performed for many years as part of Victoria’s Immaculate Machine before joining up with The New Pornographers. She has also released two solo records and is just wrapping up production on her third album. She stopped by the show yesterday to talk about the new New Pornos record Brill Bruisers and to perform a couple originals.

I love the sound of her new song “Song in C-Minor.”

And from her 2011 album Bright and Vivid, she performed the song “Turn a Light On.”

Year After Year
Yesterday on the show, Victoria alt-folky-countryish-indie rock band Hawk and Steel stopped by to perform a couple songs and talk about their set  at VIC Fest this Saturday, Day Stage at 3PM.

The boys performed a song they are currently working on as an upcoming 7-inch single called “Year After Year.” It just might be the best slow jam of 2014!

Hawk and Steel then performed a song called “David and Katie.” The song is the fictional tale of a couple who rob a bank to get the money they need to leave their small town life behind.  But is it a fictional tale? Lead singer Peter Gardner knew a kid in highschool who actually robbed a bank on Salt Spring Island.

rise against
Lots of new radio singles at the Factory today. New Spoon song called “Rent I Pay,” The New Pornographers are back with “Brill Bruisers” and Rise Against gives us the first taste of their upcoming album The Black Market.

Lead singer Tim McIlrath says in a press release about the new record, “Rise Against has always been a political band, but also a personal band, We’ve always had songs that have a foot in both worlds. This album is a lot more introspective to me.”

New Rise Against record The Black Market comes out on July 15th.
