Here is a pretty but ultimately sad song from a duo originally from the small British town of Bridlington. They go by the brand Seafret.

Their acoustic song “Give Me Something” is the title track for their upcoming ep which will be out in September.

This song is an older cut, but it’s new to me. The group is from LA… they are called Best Coast, and this lo-fi retro sounding rock & rolla is an early single of their’s from 2009.

My friend Jenn went to Seattle to check out the Capital Hill Block Party last weekend. … sorry CAPITOL.

Lots of great pics on her social media from Emerald City and she got to see Philadelphia’s The War on Drugs.

The Hollywood Reporter posted their top records of 2014 (so far)…top of the list, The War on Drugs Lost in the Dream.

My friend James over at The Peak was talking about how red hot the single “Red Eyes” is on the radio in Vancouver right now…I had to pick up the record. Sunday was a lazy day. Coral and Maddy were at a birthday party and she left me with baby Jack to entertain for a few hours. I deceided we’d best use our time by heading heading downtown on a long walk, eating some Asian Street Food and buying records.

While downtown, we stopped at Foo Asian Street Food on Blanshard at Yates. Man, it was hot day, but they were all sold out of their watermelon & feta salad.

c’est dommage.

Oh wait… I can make that! I called the kitchen manager and asked him…and he gave me the recipe.

Foo’s Watermelon & Feta Salad

Pomegranate molasses & Chinese Black Vinegar dressing
Cubed watermelon
Chopped up cucumber
mint and cilantro
pepper mix (black and szechuan)
drizzle on some dressing
finish with crumbled feta

BOOM! It’s good.

New @FFEENNCCEESS, a hot drink on a hot day, and #Barkerville

Hello Bloglandia…back from a little holiday. Our little tribe headed to Quesnel for my cousin’s wedding. And when in Quesnel, you gotta hit Barkerville. An honest to goodness British frontier town. I don’t know how many young and hip music blog readers will find themselves in the wilderness of central British Columbia…but you’ll be surrounded in working beards, not fashionable beards. Its great.

Barkerville was an old gold mining town from the days of colonial British Columbia. Billy Barker found gold in William Creek in 1861, a town sprung up near his mine and that town is named after him.

Today it is preserved as a museum town. They have all sorts of stuff to do…my kid got a kick out of gold panning. And she loved all the horses pulling wagons around the town.

Fun fact.. Billy Barker is buried in Victoria. His grave is in the Ross Bay Cemetery. Neat.

Rolling hot at the radio factory, brand new song from Seattle indie rocker Fences showed up. Fences has many cool friends and they all came together on his new single “Arrows.”

Recorded by Death Cab For Cutie‘s Chris Walla, re-imagined by Ryan Lewis and featuring verse from Macklemore. Lyrically themes that get right to the point and there you have a posit-rock Much Mega hit.

Macklemore talks about Fences; “Fences is a good friend, he’s fucked up in the same way that I’m fucked up. Because of that, our lives relate beyond the music. I’ve always admired his talent for illustrating with words and evoking imagery. We’ve made a bunch of stuff together over the years and this here song about Arrows is my favorite one we’ve done.”

From the radio show yesterday…. Dylan & Jason were talking about regulating your body temperature on a hot day by drinking a hot beverage. is that true? I call Professor Frank Marino at Charles Sturt University in Australia and I talk to Professor Kathy Gaul at the University of Victoria to get the cold facts.

Rocking The Shores and The Elves of Iceland

Busy weekend in the Garden City. I’ll be DJing a couple weddings, but before I head off to a hotel ball room, I’ll be taking my little tribe down to Rock The Shores.

I had to work yesterday, so I missed USS which sucks. I love those guys. Today I am amped to see Jesse Roper and The Dudes before I have to take off and DJ.

Yesterday I had to work. During my show I talked to a writer at Pacific Standard named Ryan Jacobs…he used to be at The Atlantic. Last fall he wrote an article about Iceland and how the people there fiercely believe in elves.

I was sitting around the radio factory with DJ Boitano yesterday and he was talking about this funny break Dylan and Jason did on mammals and how long almost all of them take to urinate.

Listening to @HawkandSteel’s new slow jam, “Year After Year” on repeat.

I blogged about a month ago about Victoria band Hawk and Steel and their beautiful slow jam, “Year After Year.” They visited me at The Zone and we recorded the song live in studio. Peter Gardener talked about an upcoming 7-inch split single with the Toronto based band Snoqualmie that they were working on. Well he have a date, August 8th. And you can order the 7-inch by hitting Hawk and Steel’s band camp page.

The song “Year After Year” is about perseverance. Despite some ups and downs in the relationship…here you are. This song might not speak to all relationships, but I think for the love stories that it does speak to, it hits direct.

When I hear this song, I think about loyalty, dependability, support, warmth. Maybe you’ll love it as much as I do.

James Blake and The Leftovers

My wife and I hit that new HBO show yesterday, The Leftovers…not bad…after True Blood (which I can’t wrap my head around, but Coral loves it). There is a song they used in the trailer and also during Sunday’s pilot.

During one of the big climaxes of the episode, a cult comes to demonstrate during a “heroes day” memorial service. And as the tensions build toward what you feel will be showdown, James Blake’s “Retrograde” soundtracks the scene.

Powerful song, powerful scene. I’ve had the song firmly planted in my head since.

Tall Tree Music Festival

Made it back from the Tall Tree Music Festival. Festivals are a hot commodity….but I’ll tell ya, if you’re an urban type rocking this blog, you haven’t seen anything like Tall Tree.

Four days of rain, sun, ocean, mountains….bands and DJs. All up on the side of a mountain overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Getting there is just part of the adventure.

The festival is a pretty good balance of traditional rock bands and DJs. The afternoon is see-sawing back forth between EDM and bands. Then at night, DJs till dawn.

Somewhere in the mix you’re getting rained on and sloshing through the mud with a beer in your hand and green trees in your sights. Lots of high fives, lots of smiles. Quality people.

I was only up for a couple days of the festival before my carriage turned into a pumpkin and I had to go back to work. During those precious 48 hours I saw some shit maaaaaan.

Loved Victoria’s Neon Steve.

I got excited when he dropped Sylvan Esso into his Friday morning set.

BESTiE from Vancouver were there (I missed their set)…but I did see WMNSTUDIES…. and here’s a remix WMNSTUDIES did of their song “Asleep On The Bus.”

Australia’s Pete Murray was new to me…and I think the few brave souls that were vertical on Friday afternoon, but apparently he’s kind of a big deal back in Koalaland.

The people that were into him, were REALLY into him.

Tall Tree was pretty magical and I am already excited to go back. I’ll just need to sort out some childcare because I’ll need my girl Coral with me.

We birthed our party band, Stable Hands, at Tall Tree and I think we even hyped ourselves enough to get signed? At least a late night set at the Spirit Tree Tent.

New Mastodon record rips so good.

Downloaded the new Mastodon record today… Once More ‘Round The Sun. This guy over at Grantland said that Mastodon are Pop Metal..or the closest thing to it in the year 2014. I’ll believe that. It sure is a fun record!

The reviews over at Pitchfork and Rolling Stone were…alright.

The single “High Road” rips.

OK friends…I’m going dark side of the moon for a bit. Off to Tall Tree for a couple days, then DJing a wedding up in Duncan. See you on the the otherside.
