Some thoughts that have been rattling around….

How Spotify Made Lorde a Pop Superstar (FORBES)

I was interested to read this story as I love music and technology. Basically the writer makes the case that Lorde gained the traction she needed to breakthrough because her song was added to an influential playlist on Spotify.

On April 2nd, Parker added Lorde’s single “Royals” to Hipster International, a move that would help propel the then unknown sixteen-year-old to international stardom. “The moment Lorde’s “Royals” was added to Sean Parker’s popular Hipster International playlist on Spotify, we saw an immediate reaction around the world,” Jason Flom, the head of Lava Records, who signed Lorde this spring, said in an email. “Six days later, “Royals” debuted on the Spotify Viral Chart. The plays just kept growing as word of the track spread across their network…It was the first spark that lit the blaze of attention and activity that culminated in Lorde’s incredible album debut.”

That’s a nice story.  But as I read this piece I had more questions than answers.  Working in radio for as long as I have I couldn’t help but wonder why something as seemingly influential as “Hipster International” has only launched a single international hit?  The truth is that the reason Lorde’s “Royals” is a Much Mega Hit is because Lorde’s “Royals” is a HIT.  Her marketing team just chose Spotify and then spent their money there to promote it.  I cruised the list and there are many great songs, but if word-of-mouth and a nod from Sean Parker equals success, then Pacific Air should be pretty huge too.

The song is good, nice pop song, and near the top of Sean Parker’s influential list.  But it is Lorde that dominates the conversation in music right now.

I have just about wrapped reading the book Blockbusters by Anita Elberse.  The book offers many insights into the sociology of why the collective we, like what we like.  You can read that book, then go back to this story and see that the same rules apply even if the url of the gatekeeper has changed.

kvelertak-Meir
No word of a lie… I read the Spin guy describe the cover art of Norway’s Kvelertak as “Hobbit-porn” and I was compelled to listen.

Leave it on the Ice

CMCT turned me on to a beauty hockey jam from 3 Inches of Blood.  This song needs to be part of The Hockey Guys show.  NEEDS.

And because we’re talking 3 Inches of Blood…. YES!

new sunset hotel2
From the West Coast Best Coast of…. Ireland? Doesn’t matter where you are, Best Coast is best.

The band is called New Sunset Hotel.  The Irish lads had a bit of a regional hit when their brand of folky indie emo showed up on BBC 2 and Today FM in Ireland.  The song “The Bitter End” also flirted with some hot chart action in Ireland as well.

It took some time and some growth to be able to follow up that initial success, but things have fallen into place for a song called “Love Revolution.”  Too be honest, I much prefer this new one to “The Bitter End.”

The band says RIYL The Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men, Kodaline.

I’d support that assertion.   Here we go!

Dispatch from Rome

JP in Europe
JP Maurice sent a dispatch from Rome…. his song “The Other One” is getting some love in Vancouver on The Peak, and he was hoping we’d check it out here in Victoria.

Matt Good Live!

matthewgood-arrowsofdesireaw
Matthew Good performed in Victoria last night at The Royal.  My friend Razer dragged me along for a night.  I hadn’t seen Matt Good in awhile so it was nice to hear some of the old songs.

The set was heavier on his new stuff form the record Arrows of Desire.  The new stuff didn’t do it for me personally with the exception of the singles “Arrows of Desire” and “Had it Coming” which really popped.  Being a fan from back in the beginning, I prefer the older song and I thought the energy of the whole room elevated when he busted into his more familiar music.  A few songs really stood out for me, I thought “Weapon” sounded bossanova.  He has not posted any live cuts from Victoria, but here is his performance 0f the song in Peterborough earlier in the tour.

I also enjoyed “Born Losers” from 2007’s Hospital Music.

The set sounded great in the theatre.  I might have added a few more “hits” to the mix, but I’m a radio DJ, not a rock star.  My personal favoruite is “Generation X-Wing.”  That song did not make the cut…but let’s relive the magic together on Youtube.

So good.

Birdy-Fire-Within
In a pre-Lorde world, there was a young lady named Birdy.  This UK singer put out a self-titled record consisting almost entirely of covers.  Like check out this cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love.”

I also really dug her take on Phoenix’s “1901.”

The second to last song that record was an original and the promise of more to come.

The 17-year-old has released that follow up, its called Fire Within.  The record is out in part of the world far more exotic than Canada, but a North American release is planned for 2014.

The single is called “Wings.”  Its a big polished pop ballad.  Popmatters does a pretty good job in their article breaking down the tracks.

Song kinda reminds me of Snow Patrol?  Little bit.

New We Hunt Buffalo

we-hunt
Say goodbye to history…. say hello to We Hunt Buffalo.  Everyone favourite Fraser Valley rockers who probably meant to say they hunt Bison, are bringing more of their sludgy fuzz rock on a new single called “Hometown.”

Their Victoria show was cancelled but Vancouver folks can hit a show on December 4th at The Commodore.

Hollerado
Toronto’s (or Ottawa’s) Hollerado were in Victoria last weekend.  Before the show they visited with Jon Williams… and they sang their interview!  WHAT? Believe it.  Then an acoustic version of “So It Goes.”

Hey remember that time “Juliette” was a hot slice of modern rock?  Yeah so do I.

Victoria’s Vince Vaccaro will release his ukulele record Koa next Tuesday, November 26th.

A very personal record, Vince dives into his own memories and life for the stories and themes that dominate the 10 tracks.   For the feature cut, “Here in My Place,” Vince worked with Victoria producer Dave Wallace for a video.  “Here in My Place” touches on many of the aspects of Vince Vaccaro’s life that people familiar with him will recognize.  You have VV at the beach, VV on stage, and VV in the shop.  You’ll watch this video and think, “oh man, Vancouver Island is really pretty….and Vince knows how to do wood work?”
