Another Bear Mountain post?  Yup.

I saw this song bouncing around the intertron today and immediately liked it.  Toronto producers Natural Animal put their pixie dust all over one my favourites off Vancouver based Bear Mountain’s XO record, “Faded.”

Young Galaxy will be in Victoria on Wednesday, September 25th for a show at Lucky Bar.  The band was up for a Polaris Music Prize but ultimately lost out to conscientious rockers Godspeed You! Black Emperor.  Who knows… maybe that’s for the best? I punched up Young Galaxy’s new single “Crying My Heart Out” on the radio and people called up all grouchy bemoaning how horrible this song is.  Weird…. I hear this song and I wanna make out.  When Catherine McCandless sings “and its hard, when I’m playing ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart'”… I melt.

I’m an old man. I have a parent/teacher talk at some weird hour Thursday morning…. but godspeed me! Imma try to be there tomorrow night.  haters goin’ hate.

CHYEA… I got a Tea Time jam for you.  Randomly stumbled on this band Vaults outta London Town.  This blog says MYSTERIES!

twin forks
Have you ever sat around your office punching up old music video’s from 2001 and thought “I wonder what happened to that chick in the ‘Screaming Infidelities‘ music video?”

Actually… what happened to Chris Carrabba?

Maybe he read that Mumford & Sons were going on hiatus and charged into the breach?

The Dashboard Confessional frontman has a new band called Twin Forks.  The Georgia Straight says the music has a celebratory feel.  Twin Forks will roll into Victoria on November 25th for a show at Club 9one9.

Now have a listen to this!

No the band
No the band, from Echo Park, Los Angeles, California came to Victoria.  Their first ever Canadian show was at 3PM on a Friday.  There were not too many people in attendance as the doors of Rifflandia had just opened.   For those of us that started our party early, we had a chance to see a pretty decent, moody, indie band.

No’s most popular song on soundcloud is called “Stay With Me.”  The song was featured on the TV show Suits the other day.

It would be pretty easy to draw a parallel to Brooklyn’s The National.  It has that gravity and atmosphere for sure.  Here is another song I liked off their ep.  This one reminds me of the Airborne Toxic Event, or even Atomic Tom.

live for the night
My second favourite sister-electronic act is coming to Victoria.  Chicago’s Yousaf sisters in conjunction with Kris Trindl perform as Krewella.

New record is called Get Wet and its out on September 24th.  The first single is “Live For the Night.”  Bang bang!

The “Get Wet Tour” will be in Victoria on October 1st at Club 9one9.  Then across the Salish Sea to Vancouver on the 2nd at Celebrities.

A school night?  Ahhhh… my kid can drive herself to school on Wednesday morning.

Bear Mountain
That’s a wrap on another glorious Rifflandia.

We shared some times, laid some high-fives and huddled under some umbrellas.

Saturday night took me out to Metchosin to DJ a wedding.  It was mostly a good night except I battled with some technical problems which threatened to take the whole night sideways.  I was stressed.  Sweating, the bad sweats…but fortunately the bride was gracious and the temperamental beast DJ controller settled down after a reset.

I wanted so badly to race back into Victoria to catch Bear Mountain.  Before Saturday I was hitting below the Mendoza Line for Night shows I wanted to see.  Saturday threatened to be another wash with me out working in Metchosin.  But then the rock & roll gods took over.

The wedding had a hard 12 midnight curfew and the families of the bride and groom went into clean beast-mode.  The bride’s father even helped me tear down.  they were so wonderfully efficient that the whole party was cleaned up and the lights turned off by 12:15AM!

hmm…I can get downtown in time for Bear Mountain.  I ride!

It didn’t take long for the Purple Minivan to saddle up to a parking spot right out front of the Copper Owl.  Only, there was a problem.  The Copper Owl was lined up out the door. FUCK!

In line I got a text from Razer saying that he heard that Bear Mountain were going to do an after party at Studio CMCT.  The dude in line with me said that Studio CMCT was a cross the parking lot AND some jovial band was in there right now….but go quick, it is also PACKED!

Thanks bro… I ride!

Not far, across the parking lot to Discovery Street and Studio CMCT is indeed packed.  I can’t see the band but I overhear from a couple bumbling down the road that it is Towers and Trees.  Amazing, I’ll join this party.

Drummer Jesse of Towers and Trees also shops at Urban Outfitters.

Adrian and his band of merry men (and women) rocked a glorious and uplifting set.  The word is that they’ll be the next thing outta Victoria and this party proved it.

The room was packed.  Hot, sweaty, swirling, dripping.  It was a raw punk rock concert moment from an uplifting band known more for their West Coast-Current Swell-tinged popular rock.  What a time,

Adrian took some time to work his way across the mass of party people to the back with his ukulele…got the room to go quiet and changed the whole dynamic.  Everyone was quiet.  Things settled, until Adrian worked his way back to the front and the band finished strong launching into their local hit “Montreal.”  The room went sub-atomic!

Their set ended, Colin McT at Studio CMCT cleared the room and quickly got to work.  His crew snapped into action.  A quick sweep, cables, line tests, feedback, power. No time to put a roll of toilet paper by the one toilet in the back corner because it is showtime.

Bear Mountain crossed the parking lot and got right to work (again).  Their set started near 2:15 AM and they had little time to waste.  For 45 minutes the band named for a posh suburb of Victoria and now based out of Vancouver punched through their EP XO (Last gang Records).  The set included most the songs from the EP including popular jams “Two Step” and “Congo.”  The party turned savaged with the capacity space dancing and jumping then launching into claps and back into a room of jumping kids.

I think at some point lead singer Ian Bevis had us singing Tear for Fears “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”  Maybe I dreamed it?

After the show the, the L’Authentique Poutine & Burger was weirdly still open.  I got in line and scored a mega post show poutine.

I got home on a rock & roll high that I have not been on in many years.

Rifflandia exceeded my expectation this year. I hung out with quality people, having the best of times.  I am amped on Riff 7 in 2014!  And if you’re reading this blog for points beyond the best Island… you’d be wise to schedule you’re holiday in Victoria for the middle of September.

Pol and I were talking about the best laid plans, and how they easily go sideways.  The reality is that parties have a gravitational pull and I will fall into the orbit of the dominating one!

Stay hydrated, we’ll see out there.

I sometimes wish I kept more stuff…. that seems weird when people are always wanting to shed things…but back before I got a smartphone (and i was late bloomer) I didn’t take too many pictures. And I didn’t keep too many mementoes.  I was thinking about it today as I was trying to remember those first couple Rifflandias.  I still have my Rifflandia 1 ticket stub but can’t really recall the shows.  I just remember how it worked.  I barely remember Riff 2 except I DJ’d the Thursday night upstairs in the Clubhouse at the Strathcona.  I was able to go downstairs to see Said the Whale and Dan Mangan which was rad.  I remember Riff 2 had line-ups, or people complaining about them but I just wandered around to venues with no people and stumbled into Lucky Bar where there was hardly anyone.  The Laundronauts played and I think they had a bubble machine?  Finally I ended up at Element (which is now Club 9one9) and I was able to see Holy Fuck!

There were some issues at the radio factory because head-office wasn’t sure if The Zone should be associated with an event featuring a band called Holy Fuck!  Apparently someone had complained direct to head office about…I dunno, rock & roll…but things were patched and Riff 2 was gold.

Riff 3 I think was the year it rained a bunch and I met Melissa Auf der Maur in the Veneto.  Neat.

Right, Holy Fuck!

Their song “Lovely Allen”…yup still a favourite.  The show down in the basement on a drunken night so many moons ago was brilliant and it is one of my few memories still in my brain of Riff 2 (that and Dan Mangan’s beautiful eyes).

The Rifflandia Magazine for Riff 6 says that Holy Fuck have a new record in the works?  That’s cool, their Tumblr is light on the info and I think Pitchfork stopped caring about them in 2010.

This song is recent-ish….

So let’s party like its 2009 on Friday, September 13th.  12:30AM at Sugar Night Club.

Holy Fuck, what time is it?  I gotta wake up in 6 hours to take the kid to school.  Go with yourself.

We’ll be premiering the new Arcade Fire single “Reflektor” today at 9PM.

Their album, Reflektor, comes out on October 29th from Merge Records (I am going to visit that place one day).  Pitchfork claims they can hear some David Bowie in the mix.  neat.  Can’t wait for 9PM!

Here is a promotional trailer for the single.

Lorde-Royals-wild-boyz-remix-download
Lorde’s “Royals” is a Much Mega Hit right now.  The 16-year-old from New Zealand is on the cover Billboard Magazine and her album Pure Heroine is out on September 30th.

It’s Friday! So let’s lay down a remix from Wild Boyz (free download if you “like” their facebook page).  The band adds some “dub-step breakdowns.”  For the most part I dig this mix except the weird chipmunk moments.
