CRC 91 begins with some new music.  A punky one from a band called Class of ’84 then Dan Politano sent a new recording over as well.  The second half of the show features a couple BC bands taking part in the Sasquatch! Music Festival in Washington State.  Vancouver’s fuzzy hyper-blogged about Japandroids and Victoria’s  ice cool and atmospheric Jets Overhead.  Neat-O gang.  Thank you for downloading my podcast.

Dan Politano, its been awhile friendo.  After the punk, we calm it down for another alt-lite from the Sidney, VI rocker (are you from Sidney Dan?).

Today (or I guess yesterday) the Ear Candy blogged leaked the Sasquatch festival line-up.  Today it was official so I thought I’d include a couple CRC darlings to end the podcast.

Japandroids are Terminal Rock City’s fuzz heroes and one of THE MOST BLOGGED ABOUT BANDS!  Whoa, I iz helper them.

They *might* also be talking about the village in Alberta… which would be mighty, but doubtful.  (hmmm, now I kinda want to go there.)

This tight little podcast ends with Victoria journeymen (and women) group, Jets Overhead.  Jets rocked the Bonnaroo last year, Coachella later and now Sasquatch in May!  Our growing little army of Island invaders will all need to make a date to converge at whatever stage they are at when they play and burn one down for them.  So great.

Sasquatch! returns to The Gorge in Quincy, WA May 29-31 (Memorial Day Weekend) following early sellouts and rave reviews the past several years. Festival marks its ninth year at The Gorge, a concert venue built in the Columbia River Gorge and offering spectacular views of the river canyon. Pablo’s Heart // Opal’s Toy

bah, I’m so stupid.  I totally flaked on the fact that one of my favourite bands of 2009, The Rural Alberta Advantage, is coming to Victoria tomorrow.  AND its now sold out.

Oh I am a sad panda bear.  sad emoticon, go! 😦

But in positive news (unless of course its sold out), Four Tet will be in Vancouver on February 24th and I’ll be in Coquitlam celebrating Madelyn’s second year of life and the 2010 Olympics.  If it can be done and I can be on a ferry early enough Thursday morning, I *might* try and go.  I say might because the logistics  could be more hassle than the value.

But I read a great interview with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) that just re-ignited my love for his style of electronic beats. (and the dude went to high school with the man that is Burial?  SWA?)

Pitchfork: On the new album, there’s a track called “Pablo’s Heart”, which is 11 seconds of a swooshing, pulsing beat. Is that title to be taken literally?

Four Tet: It is Pablo’s heartbeat. Pablo is my godson. His father recorded the heartbeat on his mobile phone at the doctor’s office and sent me the recording. His parents were coming to see a live show I was doing, so I took that sound and played it through the sound system. It was really loud and sounded like a mad modular synth when the bass was pumped up. It was this really crazy scene. His heart at the time was probably the size of a pea and I was using it to make this immense sound. He’s not very old, so he won’t understand when he sees the record. I put it on as a little present to him.

Pitchfork: It’s your Herbert moment. Does that have any relation to the end of the track “Plastic People”, when it sounds like there’s a kid hitting some bells or percussion? Is that Pablo as well?

Four Tet: I was working on music while staying with some friends of mine, and their little girl Opal was playing this little toy piano and I recorded it. If I listen back to my old record, Rounds or something, an album I made over a period of a year or so, it’s almost like a diary for me. I don’t think I listen to it like anybody else would. For me, it’s about all the memories from that time, how I made each song, where I was and what was going on. I always put little references to my life in the music I’ve made. It’s no different with this record, I’ve just done a couple of things more explicit this time, like calling the track “Pablo’s Heart”.

In the past it would have been buried and I wouldn’t have told anyone about it. I wanted him to have a little gift almost, a sound off the record. There aren’t lyrics or anything in my music. I don’t have any explicit thing for people to read into, so I like putting a lot of personal touches in the music. If I bare my soul in bits and make it personal, I think people can sense that when they hear it. I don’t know what it is. People read into the music. I have a feeling that they can believe that I’m trying to put some emotion forward. It’s not just some technical exercise.

I love it, so much exciting stuff to try and pull out of the music.  But its also interesting for me to read about the things that are real, that this artist is pouring into his music.  It was a very good interview if you care… read it.

I’ve been blogging about music lots lately.  I think that is a good thing.  I don’t quite get as many hits on my music posts generally.  But at the same time, my biggest days have been music posts and my catalog posts seem to be the ones that still get discovered.  That is kinda neat.  I’ve always had a challenge with that.  I like music and talking about music, but it doesn’t generate too much emotion in most people that find my blog.  Oh well… its my blog.

The other thing I’ve been trying to feel is some zen.  Getting tired of fighting with people about shit all the time.  Twitter turns the hyper engine on overdrive.  I’ve been catching myself a few times and not posting stuff I want to say because I weigh out whether its worth the debate and drama.

Focus is good.  There are some other things I want to start working on too, but it will have to wait… always waiting.

A couple things I am waiting for, Vancouver this weekend and Sasquatch in May.  They announce the line-up tomorrow.   Can’t wait.

awww, its about the servers?  really… how about you pay them a living wage if you valued their work.  Then the tip would be just that, a tip.  After the Olympics, put them back down to $8/hour…

I’ll be downtown next weekend for the Olympics and if it comes time to enjoy a pint or a bite and there is an automatic gratuity I’ll be pushing off to the next restaurant or packing a lunch.  I guess that is freedom.  You can gouge tourists and I can eat elsewhere.

I have a mad man crush for the Japandroids.

The Vancouver band will be releasing five limited press vinyl singles this year because they won’t be able to manufacture the time to record a follow up for Post Nothing (2009).

I’ve been streaming the first single “Art Czars” all afternoon.  I am not allowed to play with my credit card right now, or I so would have pre-ordered the 7 inch single.  Wait?  I gotta fix my record player first… THEN I’ll pre-order the single.  Pay day is what, the 15th?  OK, remember to fix the record player.

I reckon to hear the news that the Japandroids will be playing the festival.  They were supposed to play last year but for some reason had to cancel.  I do know of at least one Victoria band playing… but I better not spoil the surprise.

“Buying Records in Record Stores is Cool.”  aww, thank you Spoon, you’re cool too.

Spoon’s new one, Transference, is out today and I’m holding the 33 in my hot little hand right now (oh, I mean I’m typing, its beside me).  Funny, I am not listening to the record, I got it going on electronically because Coral is watching TV, so I got to enjoy this music best with headphones on.

No problem, the record is spooky good.  Lots of sounds.  Lots of sounds?  Swa?  Its a record, it better have sounds.  But what I mean is, its weird and mystical sounding in that jangly Spoon “ga ga ga ga ga” kinda way.  Headphones works.

I was excited to get this record today.  I didn’t have time before my radio show to swing by Ditch, so I had to get on my horse after the program to race down to Johnson and sneak in just before the bell.

Holy moly, how many records has this Austin, Texas band put out since the early/mid 90s?  7 LPs and a bunch of eps?  I have only the most recent three, Transference, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, and Gimme Fiction.  Plus the eps Got Nuffin and Don’t Cha Evah.  One of the reasons I was excited for Transference was because I have so extensively enjoyed previous work.  I was hard not to reckon that anything new would be great.

First listen in, and sure enough… its a good Spoon record.  On the Zone, you might have heard Dave feature “Got Nuffin” and now he is trying out “Written in Reverse.”  If you’re thinking of downloading a couple you might want to start there.  I am also jiving on “Out Go The Lights” which is a bit more ballady for a Spoon cut.  “Mystery Zone” is a good one too.

Today was a big day for all the indie rocking hipsters.  It was the day that the tight panted gods wearing their godly ironic fluorescent yellow sunglasses announced the line-up for this years Coachella Music Festival.  Now really, how many of will be taking off to the desert of California for a weekend in April?  I wish (and fingers crossed some sort of miracle will happen). But this is a great bellwether for the festival circuit as a whole.  These are the bands that want to be active this summer, in front of you, melting your face with sweet licks.  And Spoon is on the list.  SO!  Will Spoon be at Sasquatch this year?  Oh god I hope so… and I hope a lot of other things.  Frightened Rabbit?  SWA?  They are my favourite band of the NOW and they’ll be at Coachella.  Sasquatch is only a month later so I hope that means they could be there too.

Sasquatch is smaller, so all these bands won’t be there.  But some will.  Some is good.  Frightened Rabbit and Spoon?  best!  Last year I died when I experienced Explosions in the Sky.  It would be the cherry on my life sundae to witness a few more all-time faves.

This talk of Sasquatch reminds me that I should book the days off.  Last weekend of May.  The plan on paper has me trying to finagle some media passes.  Coral and I walk on the ferry over to Vancouver.  That is a considerable savings… which we plow into a tank of gas for my old man’s RV and south along the I5 we go… a good full day in advance of the festival.  Some fine cheap US shopping in Bellingham to fill our stocks and then through Seattle.  Maybe a pause to be tourists for a bit, then south-east to Ellensburg then the Gorge.

God smiles, and its sunny and hot like last year.

Coral and I are having a bit of a debate about whether we bring Madelyn of not.  She’ll be over two which is good.  She will be strong like ox.  RV will really help.  There were many kids last year at Sasquatch and when I am away from Madelyn for a few days, regardless of how drunk I am, when I see the families… I think, aw that would be fun.  Coral thought we could get a little inflatable pool for the camp.  Then I thought?  What about bringing a pool into the venue?  Could you imagine?  Madelyn would make a lot of hippy friends if the temperature is in the 90s like last year.

Jury is out on Madelyn.  Nana or Grandma might want to take advantage of a weekend with her, so then we’ll leave her.  maybe they won’t.  We bring her.  I talk a mean game about getting drunk, but the truth is I might enjoy my weekend more if I keep it under control.  So staying sober won’t be a big deal if my baby comes.  And I think she’ll get a kick outta the carnival atmosphere, plus huge savings if I lay off the $9 US Daddy Pops.  Anyways, its cool either way.  We’ll see who wants to be part of the adventure and see what everyone thinks, cuz as they say… it takes a village to raise a kid and if it’ll be more buzz kill than cute attack I’ll beg Nana to have a sleepover for the weekend.

The other thought is pack down my DJ rig and some speakers and generator and fire up a dance party in the camp?  That is an ambitious thought, but would be hugely popular after a day of rock & roll.  The music is king but camp is like… not the king, but really good and with boobs.  Queen?  sure.

I better get off the computer now, Coral wants to play and she’s not supposed to use her cell phone to cruise the net!  Silly Bell and their overage charges.

Looking forward to the Sasquatch Festival this weekend.  A couple bands that I will be seeking.

Grizzly Bear

The new song is called “Two Weeks” and in the couple days I’ve had it on the laptop I have developed a minor obsession.  The Fred Falke remix will get some love tonight at The Clubhouse.  I don’t really know how to explain the song, probably best if you just click the link above and listen.  Indie rock?  I guess that’s what it is all called these days.  I like the remix a better.

Passion Pit

Maybe a little on the bizarre, but there is something about this guy’s style that captivates.  “Sleepyhead” so far has been the stand-out off his recentish ep Chunk of Change.

The Avett Brothers

hmmm, someone told me I’d like this alt country duo, but I can’t remember who… so if it was you, thank you.  I do like them.

The Airborne Toxic Event

Pitchfork hates this band, I love them.  I missed ATE at Pemberton because they were on some side stage early in the day and I didn’t get over to the stage very often (or maybe they were mainstage, or late, or…).  I was weighed down with my baby in tow and it was hard to move about from stage-to-stage all day and still keep the baby Rampage saited.

Sasquatch, Corj and I are leaving Mads with Nana and I’ll be bringing my walking shoes and thermos of Vodka/red bulls.

Speaking of the baby Rampage… she awakens and I must go.
