Silversun

This is pretty cool, The Silversun Pickups are on their way to Victoria for a Zone Show tonight and included a picture on their twitter of the Ferry ride.

Yesterday, when I was on the ferry, back from our Kings of Leon concert adventure, we saw whales!  no rock stars, but man, there were so many whales out there on the water.

KOL was a fun shit show.  Coral, Alyx, Gord and I bee-lined downtown to this little pub called Dix.  Dix serves up its own micro-brew, Red Truck.  Why do we know and love Red Truck in Victoria?  Because that fine brewery sued our friend Matt Phillips and made him stop brewing his Blue Truck. (I mean calling it “Blue Truck,” he still brews it as Blue Buck).

What ever, I forgive and I order and you know what?  Good, no Blue Truck, but a quality micro-brew at a decent price consider we were in the tourist ghetto on Vancouver.  Prices were actually pretty decent at Dix.  James and Holly showed up with James’ brother and James let us know you can eat peanuts by the bucket in Dix and toss the shells on the floor Big Bad Johns style.  Fun.

Coral and I wobbled over to GM Place after the Whigs, a couple more beers and KOL hit the stage jamming out one of my fave tracks, “Be Somebody.”

Txts from that night:

me: they totally played sex is on fire!

james: I got crabs!

me: Hey remember that time holly gave me the aids?

James: Remeber that time they played sex is on fire and I got a total semi

They basically jammed out all the hits, good set, humble guys, loud crowd then back to Coquitlam for some John B. Pub.

My sister, her BF and my brother Matt joined us and we slammed back some dirt cheap Molson.  The cover band asked for requests and I said, “KING OF LEON, SEX ON FIRE!”

The band said, “only if you sing it!”

OK.  Um, my sister has the footage somewhere.

The next day was a sunny one and we headed to the water park in Port Moody which is one of the finest family parks I’ve ever seen.  I think I have a new mission from god, and its to build a water park in Esquimalt.

David Eleanor sent me this fine 13 questions with…  it brought the lolz.

1. What artist inspired you to create art?
People like Hendrix or greg ginn or Django Reinhardt. People like them don’t
try, they are. Can’t try to be cool…

2. What or who still inspires you to keep on keeping on?
Patrick Swazye, Michael Jackson, The Olsen Twins are cool. Gotta remember to look at the man in the mirror, dude. Don’t forget that, OK?

3.  What would you rather be doing right now?

Your silly facehole.

4.  Give us your best recipe? Let us have it.
No.

5. How old were you when you lost your virginity and how’d it go?

Just days after my 13th birthday & it was better than I hoped it could be. I
’ve been adickted to it ever since.

6. What makes you cringe?
Peter Setera, any form of mob, the kids, people who try to be weird (so they
can tell you they’re so weird), your problems, singing at parties, wearing
orange proudly & things having to do with teeth.

7. If you could pick one super power and it had to be either being able to fly or being able to time travel, which would you go with? And what would you do first with your new found super power? Would you rally on the side of good or evil?
I’d travel through time as captain common sense. I’d render the downtrodden impervious to these stooopid shit, fake rules that lawyers & other douche bags attempt to actualize into existence. We’d laugh more, jivetalk less, be able to shed bitterness faster & remain excited about not knowing it all.

The Good & Evil part I don’t bother with. I leave that to the people who
watch life from a safe enough distance to critique it.

8. Do you have hope for this new generation of kids who worship Lindsay Lohan, suck down TMZ, download music (and have never even owned one cd or lp) and fast food gobbling generation that is in their teenage years right now? Or are they a lost cause?
I just want them kids off ma lawn.

9. Tom Cruise… genius or psycho?
Penis Taco.

10. What in the world is affecting you right now?
Where did all the nooks & crannies go? I wanna hang out at that one place we
used to go to, but everytime I think I know where that is…. Turns out, it’s
just a Body Shop.

11. Tom Jones or Neil Diamond?
Jim Jones & Neil Hamburger.

12. What could you NOT live with out?
Laughter & popcicles.

13. Give the internet some words to live by….
Well…
1st off:  I’d like to say congratulations on inheriting Earth, meek.
2nd: The funeral services for the idea, the secret & the surprise, will be
held in yourtube & you’ll have the chance to twitz a broadband stream on my
face party & personally invade my space in real time because of all your
free time… & finally……….The internet stinks of lame more than the fart wind
of  hype it rode in on     .com’ on

Some favourite music this week according to my Last FM page.

reckoning

01) R.E.M.

One of my all-time favourite bands had a strong week in at home listening powered by a review I read on Pitchfork. Pitchfork reviewed the classic R.E.M. record ‘Reckoning.’  I don’t have that disc on my laptop but I do have a compilation of 80s era R.E.M. that has more than a couple ‘Reckoning’ cuts on it.  I love the tracks “7 Chinese Bros.” “So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry)” and “(Don’t Go Back to) Rockville.”

wilcothealbum

02) Wilco

Wilco has a new album out now, their 7th or 8th depending who you ask.  I downloaded this record because it turns out… I must have like 4 or 5 Wilco records.  I never really considered myself a fan till I started paying attention to what I listen to on my playlists and when I randomize a set.  If Wilco pops up, I have to stop to go check out who the band is.

Listening to new Wilco made me nostalgic for an old Wilco song I have from the Jim Carrey film, ‘Me, Myself, and Irene.’  The song is “Any Major Dude Will Tell You.”  That might be the first time I ever had to stop and go, “hey what was that?”

03) Interpol

I never get tired of their first album, ‘Turn on the Bright Lights.’  To me, every song is special but I truly love the opening cut, “Untitled.”

I will surprise you sometime
I’ll come around
When you’re down

simple lyrics (that is basically it), very moody, tense and sexual.

04) Lou Reed

My weekend guy… I suppose I blogged about him yesterday a bit.  Sometimes I get the song “Perfect Day” in my head so fiercly, I have to listen to Lou Reed like two or three times in a row before I can move on to the next song.  Isn’t that pathetic?

I haven’t felt very good the past couple days? weeks?  but today I woke feeling chipper!  I usually feel creatively bankrupt come Friday.  I hop in the studio to jam out the modern rock countdown and I also have usually a fairly good ‘to-do’ list of commercial projects.  By the time I go on the air at 3PM, the last thing I want to do is make a really good radio show.  On top of that, I read this book that at first was inspiring, but after a few days to settle in… I asked myself some honest questions and I didn’t like the answers… damn word in a book! damn you!

What tends to happen is either or both:

The request time at 6PM rips and it makes me happy for humanity again AND/or I go out to the pub in Langford and meet so many great Zoners.  Then all weekend, I can’t wait to hop on the radio again on Monday to repeat the cycle.

I was thinking about why I like making the countdown so much (which is a half truth because I also hate it).  I love making the countdown because it is created in the studio.  I can take some time with the breaks, add a soundtrack, find clips, use my best callers from the week.  The one thing I don’t like about the show is that its not live.  But live makes the show rushed.

I was thinking of trying some of the things that I like about the countdown and incorporating it into the live show.  It’ll require a little more focus, but maybe I’ll give it a try and see how it sounds.
