Old Towns
One of my favourite folks to talk rock & roll with at the radio factory is Dan Ball.  Quality guy that is always talking about his latest vinyl purchase or rad band he recently discovered.

Dan spent some time living in Edmonton working at Filthy McNasty’s (I think?)…he’s the reason their steak sandwich is so good.  While spending some quality time in the City of Champions, Dan crashed in the basement of a band house.  The band attached to the house?  Old Towns.

The band is on tour and will be in Victoria for a show on April 19th.  An all-ager at the Oaklands Community Center with On Call Heroes.

future Islands
Finally got around to a few things yesterday.  I finished The Orenda (FUCKED UP!) and I downloaded Future Islands’ Singles.

Future Islands are picking up a good head of steam with a celebrated Letterman performance, SXSW showcase, sold out shows (including Vancouver on April 4th at the Rickshaw SOLD OUT) and the record was just shy of a Best New Music on Pitchfork.

There is a lot of enjoy about this Baltimore synth-pop trio.  I am addicted to the single “Season (Waiting on You).”

One more sleep till Cloud Nothings!

Go with yourself. (howdy, like the blog? maybe you “like” like it on Facebook)

roper
Jesse Roper and The Roper Show will be performing tonight (Happy Birthday Tindy!) at Upstairs Cabaret. If you’re planning on hitting the concert, tickets are selling like hot cakes. Red hot hot cakes. So go get ’em before it sells out.

Yesterday he stopped by the radio show to perform a couple songs live.  Both new ones.

The support act for the show tonight is a group called Band of Rascals.

Marty
When I first moved to Victoria back in 2003…there was a popular local band we used to play on The Zone called Grace Nocturnal. The lead singer was a dude named Marty Zylstra.  The band would eventually dissolve and the members would move on to other projects.

Marty ended up in Vancouver where he fronted a band called Sweetheart.  I remember hearing their cut “See You On the Weekend” on an old Starbucks compilation.

He is now operating as a solo performer.  His new single is called “Brighton.”

here is what he writes on a press release:

Carl Davis (the Left, the Pompadoors) produced this new three song EP in an old school and almost Nashville style studio session where the songs were finished on the studio floor with only the best Vancouver based studio musicians.

Mixed by Mr. Davis and mastered by Sean McGee (the Beatles, John Lennon) at Abbey Road Studios this initial offering shows three sides of Marty’s personality which includes an affinity for British culture, lyrical themes of a vision of past life lessons and future domestic bliss, and a sheer twisted humour.

Stephanie
Stephanie Raye sent me an email hoping we’d have a listen to her début ep, Melodies of Life.  The Staten Island singer showed up on Wu-Tang Clan Inspectah Deck’s mixtape “Druglord Skillionaire.”

cope
I wasn’t really expecting to like the new Manchester Orchestra record Cope, as much as I do.  The band posted the record in entirety on Youtube. Right away, I gravitated to the song “Girl Harbor.”  The record is out on April 1st from Loma Vista.

The first single is “Top Notch.”

So April 1st will be new Cloud Nothings AND Manchester Orchestra.  Dig it.

We so excited for rock & roll.

Go with yourself.  OI! and like the Morning After on Facebook pretty please.

Islands are coming to Victoria for a show on April 1st at Lucky Bar.

I *think* I saw The Unicorns years ago (and maybe The Islands too?)… I’d be into seeing these guys again. In fact, i better as I can’t really remember if I’ve seen them before.

also THIS! Nicholas Thorburn trips out the WORLD1

The Zolas will also be checking out the Pacific Buffet and floating across the Salish Sea to Victoria for a show on April 16th at Club 9one9.  I HAVE seen these guys a few times before and even remember it.

This song is MEGA on the radio right now.

And I will leave you with magic that is Buttercream.  I had a chance to yap with D’Arcy, the owner of Sugarboy Bakery.  He shared with me his recipe for Espresso Mocha buttercream icing.

Tycho
My man Drex posted this song the other day from San Francisco ambient electronic artist Tycho.  The song is “Awake.”  Such a beautiful, chill song.

This mysterio cut came from an email.  Wade sent over a song from the artist Zhu.  Zhu is based out of LA…maybe its the sunshine, but California music always seems to be so chill and/or hazy.

Here is what Wade says of the mysterious Zhu: “His name is ZHU, and since launching 6 weeks ago has been supported by Pete Tong, added to regular rotation on Triple J, and amassed over 1 million plays online. He is the singer/ songwriter/ producer on all of his records who believes that music is faceless.”

Numark NS7ii
Picked up a new controller this weekend.  Looking forward to learning the ins-and-outs of the Numark NS7ii.  I had a chance to play with it on Saturday night at a gig.  Its like DJing on a dream.

Now, I just need to book some gigs so I can pay for the thing. (oh and then buy the new Yorkville powered speakers.  Those things pound).

Go with yourself. (Hiya friends, please “like” The Morning After on Facebook)

Feels good to be home right now. Kids are sleeping, wife is in bed.  Last night my oldest had a stomach flu, she was up throughout the night barfing away…this morning it spread to Coral.  It was a long day.

Then there was the shenanigans at the radio factory!  Three bands stopped by for live performances.

Pol Plastino featured Jay Malinowski and the Deadcoast.  Jay performed in the group Bedouin Soundclash…but with his solo music, its darker, there are strings, and I think he described it as “colonial classical.”

“Something that feels like the past, that is going to a new world. (…) very distant, you don’t sound that good, pretty rough around the edges, but you used to be some place civilized.”

Later in the afternoon, Mounties popped in for a spacey breakdown of their new single “Tokyo Summer” from the record Thrash Rock Legacy (which is GREAT!).

Finally… Vancouver’s Japanese Girls made their live debut in Victoria.  They stopped by the factory and performed their single “Smalls.”

Huge day.  Took a cast of thousands to produce… OK maybe not thousands, but Pol, Jon and Boitano were all able to help get ‘er done and sounding half decent on the radio.

Go with yourself. (hey!  The Morning After Show is on Facebook, maybe you are too?)

shut up and take my like

encore, encore!  Our 2013 song of the summer in Victoria.
