After my radio show the other evening, I came across Samareh and her “Free Hugs” sign and I asked her what’s up…..
The hug was pretty good. Not like Holy Wayne from the Leftovers change you life…but a solid 7/10, would recommend.

Screwing around at the radio station…we’re all butt hurt that we aren’t lighting money on fire in the desert in California this weekend. Maybe you are too?
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats were in Vancouver last night for a sold out show at The Commodore Ballroom. It was an incredible night and demonstrated the quality of this band’s sound.
I had a hockey game last night and Coral was home with the kids buuuuuuuut, we loved LOVED their self-titled record this summer/fall. Coral and I front-to-backed that disc hard and felt like, we’re not dead yet, let’s rally and go!
Thankfully my folks agreed to watch the kids for a bit and we raced downtown
for the show.
Before the memorable night, he stopped by CFOX to perform a song off the self title album. The song is called “I Need Never Get Old.” One of my personal standouts from the record.
I also had a chance to chat with the boys for a bit before they had to run. We talked about their Much Mega Hit “S.O.B.” and he said the song was almost not included on the record! Nathaniel liked other songs on the record. Like what? I asked.
What a great day! Thank you Nathaniel and the band for hanging out yesterday and just generally being stand-up guys. Thank you Liz at Universal for the hook up with tickets for the LONG sold out show. Great night.
One of my favourite podcasts is Hrishikesh Hirway’s Song Exploder. The dude dives into songs with the creators to uncover some truth buried in the tracks and offer insight.
This week, he went back to one of my favourites, MGMT‘s “Time to Pretend” from 2007′sOracular Spectacular.
I also asked him about the stage name, “Vance Joy.” How did that come about? Vance was born James and used to play at a cafe during brunch. He’d perform a collection of covers (like Fuel’s “Shimmer”) and originals. Inspired by a character from the Peter Carey book Bliss, he branded his brunch set Vance Joy and here we are.
I feel like I kept it pretty cool. Too bad I can’t say the same for my colleague Meredith!
New record is called Tape Loops…and as the title suggests, a tape based recording session where he loops some tapes and what not.
“I can’t change a closed, physical tape loop with a mouse-click or a keystroke, and that’s precisely the point,” Walla explains. “Digital recording and editing often feels like working in a spreadsheet—it’s not always a place for dreams.”

Toronto’s Young Empires are so hot right now. Their debut LP, The Gates, is out on Friday and the single by the same name is popular on modern rock radio.
The band channels that electronic/indie rock vibe to create a fun and vibrant sound. Their first ep came out in 2012 and had more of a house energy, for this record they wanted to grow their sound.
“We all knew that we wanted to make a record that was more mature,” says lead vocalist Matthew Vlahovich. ”We were 25 years old when we wrote our first one, now we’re in our thirties. We’ve all grown up on a lot of levels.”
The band is heading out on tour, here are our Pacific Northwest shows..
Sept 15 – Portland, OR – Analog Theater Sept 16 – Seattle, WA – Tractor Tavern
Sept 17 – Vancouver, BC – Fortune Sound Club
Sept 19 – Victoria, BC – Rifflandia
FIDLAR released a brand new song yesterday called “Leave Me Alone.”
Stereogum had the premier where they say, “The new record doesn’t scrimp when it comes to giant hooks or appropriately buzzed-out guitars, but it does add an extra layer to finesse to the band’s reliably scrappy songs.”
Their new record Too is out on September 4th and I’ll be all over it next Friday for sure. God I love these guys.
FIDLAR is on tour in the fall…and typical US band, no Vancouver date. What gives?
10/22 – Wonder Ballroom – Portland, OR
10/23 – The Showbox – Seattle, WA
And I can’t believe this song is two years old now.

Hit the PNE the other day to film an episode of Sip and Spin and got to sample some food. I had heard rumblings of a mystical food called the “Fat Elvis” but sadly did not order one. I really should have. Wow.
Our second listen off the upcoming CHVRCHES record Every Eye Open is really good. “Never Ending Circle” is the name of the cut. Record is out September 25th.
Here is the previous CHVRCHES song.

We’re giving away a trip to Iceland here at CFOX.
I was talking about the classic teen comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High the other day on my radio show. I was surprised t learn the movie is based on a book that Cameron Crowe wrote. He went undercover at a highschool for a year to write it!
Going undercover for a year at a high school sounds like on of those hijinks that you could only do in the 80s….or a Drew Barrymore film.
From the soundtrack to the movie, check out The Ravyns‘ song “Raised on the Radio.”
OK, The Arcs don’t have BRAND NEW music…this song from the Dan Auerbach project came out like a month ago. But let’s reflect.

Here’s a little fun radio commercial we made at the radio factory today…. CFOX Radio Camp. If you think it is mildly funny I always appreciate a share.
