megan

My friend Megan is the biggest U2 fan I know…when I read on her Facebook that she was up at 5:40AM to hit the first ferry from Victoria to line up for a U2 concert; I had to wander down to Rogers Arena to see what was up. I discovered a delightful and wonderful tailgate carnival of international U2 fans!

and a song? How about a couple covers?

Going to the show tonight? Save me a high five.

Hawk and Steel

Victoria’s Hawk and Steel released their new single “David and Katie.” The song is from their upcoming record Anywhere But Here which comes out on June 23rd. The song tells the morose alt-country fable of…. David and Katie. neat.

It is the studio cut from a song we first heard close to a year ago when I was on The Zone.

And if I may share a clip from my radio show on CFOX in Vancouver…this is a call I got the other day from Jose. Jose survived an insane motorcycle accident.

I read the stories last week of the young woman who was sexually assaulted on a Canada Line skytrain.

This story follows one that Vancity Buzz is tracking about a serial “pick-up artist” harassing women on Robson Street.

These two stories were playing out, unrelated to each other or to me personally, until yesterday when I read a Facebook post from my friend Christy who was fuming because she had just been groped on the 99-B line. I asked her to call into the show to share her story. She said, “No it’s ok. This shit needs to stop.”

I know this isn’t a music post, I hope I don’t kill your vibe on Hype machine too badly, but I feel this is an important story and some compelling audio.

Shindig_black_high_RGB

Shindig is CiTR’s annual battle-of-the bands adventure. Tonight is the semi-final at a club called Hindenburg.

One of the judges hurt her ankle, and so she asked if I’d judge. Super duper! I haven’t been to Shindig since the early 2000s. Hopefully that gets sorted out and I’ll see you tonight.

The bands tonight are:

Malk

Skim Milk

and Poles

Fun ATTACK!

See you out there.

seeker

Yelawolf‘s new record won’t be out till 2015…but his song “Till It’s Gone” showed up a couple weeks ago on Sons of Anarchy. Listening to the lyrics…it sure sounds like a song written to show up during a montage on SOA.

And I share my latest episode of Fact Checking The Morning Zone.

I appreciate you taking the time to check out my blog or hitting the songs on Hype Machine.

prettyflyvintage
Massive club banger remix of the Offspring modern rock hit “Pretty Fly (for a white guy).”

Matt Zanardo takes us all back to high-school. (Well, takes me back to that awkward time after high school but before I had found any direction in life.) The song has a big Las Vegas style of electro houseness to it.

Before I take off for the weekend…I’ll leave you with a clip from my radio show. The Morning Zone was beeking off about Mexican food while I was driving in to boxing for my morning workout. Jason implied that Mexican food makes you fart…. but it doesn’t make me gassy…huh. I better get some experts on the show to ask them about Mexican Food.

keegan
Wild Cub principle Keegan DeWitt took a pause in the rock & roll tour schedule to call into The Zone. Here are a couple clips from that chit-chat.

Keegan shares the origin story for their much mega hit, “Thunder Clatter.”  Keegan says the idea for the song happened the week he met the woman who would eventually become his wife!

Then I asked Keegan about the song “Colour” which also touches on relationships. But this song talks about those tumultuous partnerships we enjoy in our 20s.

We’ll get a chance to see Wild Cub when their tour with Bleachers rolls through Vancouver on November 8th. The concert will be at The Rio Theatre.

lemonade
I love this old picture from Nat Geo Found. The little dude is out hustling a few bucks selling some lemonade.

“A boy sells lemonade from his front yard stand on Main Street in Aspen, Colorado, 1973.PHOTOGRAPH BY DICK DURRANCE II, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CREATIVE”

Former Victorian and now Vancouverite, JP Maurice released a new single today… check out “Poison Heart.”

Its a melodramatic song that reminds me of this This American Life piece.

I was driving home from a wedding late on Sunday night listening to the CBC. There was a song playing. I like music, but generally when a song is playing on the CBC its a bit of a downer. I was gunna punch out, but then the weirdest voice popped out of the radio and I had to listen.

Turns out the Ceeb was re-airing an old segment about professionally awkward Starlee Kine and her depressing breakup. The segment ultimately was about her quest to write the perfect torch song.

It was so bizarre, but I was transfixed. It felt at first like an over-developed character piece, but as I listened, I loved her more and more. In the end I was cheering Starlee on her adventure to create this torch song. Then she shared it with Phil Collins! Yes.
Now I love her. You really ought to go back in time to 2007 and have a listen for yourself.

Her style reminds me of the program Wiretap (which I generally hate…but also oddly love) and it turns out she sometimes shows up on that show, so circles man.

In the end, she co-wrote a song called “Three of Us.

OK, I don’t know if “Poison Heart” is a TORCH song in the traditional sense…I just heard it then immediately thought of Starlee Kine, I dunno.
