Back in Vancouver after another great weekend on the Island.
On the ferry over to Victoria on Friday night, I read this amazing story of a young man, diagnosed with terminal cancer, who made the journey from Mexico to Canada along the Pacific Crest Trail. Unreal.
I don’t think I’ll have have that wonderful trifecta of money, time, health to pull off this adventure. But I do enjoy reading the tales from the adventurers that can. I am thankful that Astro shared his story before his end.
Where my life is at right now, I can’t even put together 48 hours for a backpacking trip.
Monday begins with a new song Passion Pit. The new record will be called Kindred and it will be out on April 21st. You can preorder it tomorrow. The first single is “Lifted Up (1985).”
“Nineteen eighty-five was a good year!”
I still love “Take a Walk.”

Polyvinyl sent out an email today, talking about their annual Valentines Day sale…not in the space to buy any records today, but it did get me in the mood to listen to American Football. From their 1999 s/t record.
And here’s a Wampire cut because the song is called “Wizard Staff.”
Happy Friday! I hope you have a great Valentine’s Day weekend.

Enjoying the fine emo stylings You Blew It. New ep came, Pioneer of Nothing, came out at the end of January I think… Pitchfork got to it today.
The band is on tour, but nothing in the Pacific Northwest.

I was hanging out this morning at Propaganda, drinking a coffee and reading my book Sonic Boom.
The author talked about picking music for your brand, I loved this segment; “Don’t base your music choices on your gut instinct alone. When you just add music that you like and that you think makes the ad better – with no strategy – you’ll find yourself endlessly arguing with everyone in your company who has his or her own opinion about the music. There won’t be a clear goal or agreement on the values the music is trying to convey.”
Working in commercial radio….this quote really spoke to the challenges of programming a mainstream radio station.

Email today from This Will Destroy You. The atmospheric rockers are on tour and in Vancouver on March 25th at the Electric Owl.
The record is called Another Language and came out last September. They released a music video last week for side-one/ track-one.
Here is the first single, “Dustism.”

I do love San Francisco’s Waters. The band blends a 90s alternative sound with modern pop-rock production. They feel a little like Grouplove, but I pull a little more Kurt Cobain out of it compared to what passes for radio modern rock right now.
Waters shares another cut from their upcoming April 7th Vagrant release, What’s Real.
Have a great weekend! My family is coming to Vancouver this weekend to have a city Family Day long weekend. IO hope you find an adventure.

Still learning and exploring Vancouver. Last night I went on a journey after work. Walking around Gastown and Railtown in the rain. Found a great beer joint, the Alibi Room. Wanted to find Propaganda Coffee in Chinatown (it was closed) but made the promise to myself to hit it today.
Here we are.
Since moving to Vancouver, I’ve had y share of Starbucks and Tim Hortons, but I knew Vancouver was a coffee COFFEE town, so I decided to start making the effort to find a place. Propaganda on East Pender in Chinatown (just east of Main) was exactly what I was looking for. Chill, clean, simple space. The crew knew their coffee. I had a latte, and it was what I expected. And an important part of any groovy space is the soundtrack. I am a nerd for that so I spent some time trying to pick out the sounds…I liked the Nick Mulvey that popped up. They played “Alisa Craig.”
But that is just a sample cut…so I’ll also post the feature cut from the Londoner’s record First Mind.
So pretty.
Enjoy the subtropical rain storm. I am!
Oh and ratings came out at CFOX…my first book…and yeah they were really good. Thank you for supporting CFOX and listening to FM radio.

The Sasquatch Music Festival in Washington State will once again be amazing. I wish I could go, but sadly it is not in the cards for me. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy playing along and discovering new bands. Personally, I love listening to the small-print bands. Today lets hit play on Seattle chillwavers, Manatee Commune. Yes I searched them out 100% because of their band name.

I had to preorder the new Quarterbacks record yesterday. Well I guess I didn’t HAVE to preorder it. But I am feeling the quirky alterna-jangle of the New Paltz, New York’s Quarterbacks.
I fired up the preview on NPR the other day…and the 22-minutes sailed by. Reminds me of college radio music. And that tends to remind me of being young. And I like that feeling.
S/t is out on February 10th.
NPR brought up some similarities to Waxahatchee. Coral is less a fan of Waxahatchee. Says she reminds her of Lilith Fair music? Sure. I dig it…and new music from Waxahatchee is in the pipe! Neat.
Ivy Tripp is out on April 7th.
And then I traveled down the rabbit hole at Merge…discovered some new Mikal Cronin in the pipe. MCIII May 5th
Happy Tuesday! Hitting a Canucks game tonight. Fingers crossed for a good show from the boys in blue and green.
Oh, can I share a clip from my radio show? This is from Friday when I interviewed a guy on a downtown street corner yelling, “EBOLA is A PLAGUE FROM GOD!”
If radio clips are fucking with your vibe on HypeMachine, let me know in the comments….otherwise, I obviously like sharing my work.
