“Feels like there’s oceans between you and me.”

Ugh… sometimes a song comes up on the music stream that just nails it.

“I want you, from somewhere within.”

I heard the Seafrit song “Oceans” today…what a perfect song for a grey day living across the Salish Sea from Coral and the kids.

I know the Georgia Strait is not that great a distance and I’m being dramatic. Still, this song is a gem.

Hey how about this Snow Patrol song about love and distance?

Since we’re hanging out in folktown, let’s have a listen to the Folktronica stylings of Howard. The dude is from Brooklyn. His record is called Religion. Sounds good like the type of song you’d hear in a Zach Braf movie.

Listen to Death From Above 1979 perform “Virgins” acoustic

Death From Above 1979 is currently on a Canadian tour. They spent the past couple days in Vancouver. yesterday they stopped by CFOX for a little chit-chat and an acoustic performance of their current single “Virgins.”

Sebastian Grainger says that the song “Virgins” is “kinda like a ponderance on innocence.  My own Innocence. It’s not me fetishizing being a kid. It’s me going like, “damn, I screwed up a lot” you know. And learning lessons.”

Loving Glaswegian band PAWS // @wehavepaws

Made it down to Hindenberg last night for the Shindig semi-finals. Turns out there was a mis-communication and they didn’t need me to judge. No worries, it was fun showing up at a dingy live music bar on a Tuesday night to see some indie bands shred.

I enjoyed Abbotsford’s Malk. And Poles really channeled the spirit Kurt Cobain. Sadly I didn’t stay for eventual winners, Skim Milk…but I’m an old man and wanted to get home while transit was still doing its thing.

One part of the show that I got into was the tunes between the bands. I think they had a person from CiTR playing music off his laptop? Inbreds, Ladyhawk, Paws…all showing up.

I fell in lust with the song “Catherine 1956.” Then I saw this tweet while trolling their twitter page:

Shindig Semi-finals tonight! // @CiTRradio @malkbc @thesamdavidson #Poles

Shindig is CiTR’s annual battle-of-the bands adventure. Tonight is the semi-final at a club called Hindenburg.

One of the judges hurt her ankle, and so she asked if I’d judge. Super duper! I haven’t been to Shindig since the early 2000s. Hopefully that gets sorted out and I’ll see you tonight.

Email today from the Skizzy Mars folks…new song. CRUSHING on the Hype Machine.

Not may favourite Skizzy song, but I have insatiable lust for this kid, so beggars can’t be choosers.

The song is called “Be Lazy” and like the title, a hazy lazy cut. Skizzy talking about a mundane date idea. Netflix, maybe some sex, some pills, some weed. Pretty much the opposite of my life.

“working all week, no breaks it was crazy. Deadlines, deadline, they will never trade me.” Oh, I feel that line. OK, maybe I can relate a little to the 20-something rapper from NYC.

Also a new music video. The east coast rapper takes the party out west for a Hipster Woman/Desert fantasy sequence.

Record label rep stopped by the Radio Factory today. Dropped off a few records.  Amped to check out the new Decemberists album, even though the reviews were not great.

Catfish and the Bottlemen….I can get behind these Welsh rockers.

Check out the Rococode music video for “Banks” // @ROCOCODE

Back to the grind after an amazing weekend in Victoria with my kids (and I guess my wife too, but I barely saw her as I was either working or she was dealing with a baby shower for her friend).

I received an email today from Vancouver based Rococode. The band released a video today for their single “Banks.”

The band used creative team Fivethousand Fingers who wrote and directed the video. They took the show on the road to Montreal for the look of the clip. The video does look cool and compliments the dark-pop song.

Occasionaly I like to share a clip of my radio show on the old blog. Here is a bit from last Friday. I ask my 6-year-old daughter Madelyn what her favourite part of the new show is.

Fired up SPIN today. New JEFF The Brotherhood song today. Nice.

The Nashville duo has a new record out on March 10th called Wasted on the Dream.

They said on SPIN,  “We’re more proud of this record than any record we’ve made before. It’s the most time we’ve ever spent writing songs, the most time we’ve ever spent in the studio, and it’s definitely the most fully realized JEFF The Brotherhood record we’ve ever made.”

I could listen to this all day. Pencil March 10th into your Blackberry.

It’s been a great first week in Vancouver. Week two began with Meredith and myself filming a music video! I can’t wait to share it with you? Lots of crawling around on a the pavement in a parkade. I am covered in dust.

Family of the Year were all over the Golden Globes & new old-sounding emo music // @FamilyoftheYear @youblewit

Back from an amazing weekend in Victoria. It was my birthday on Saturday. I turned 35! Huzzah!

The family and I went out for a nice brunch and then I took Madelyn to see Annie. Much singing.

Before getting into the season premier of Girls (I love it. I know, I’m the worst), my wife had the Golden Globes on. Oh my, I heard Family of the Year‘s “Hero” 8,000 times!

A couple years ago the band was in Victoria. They stopped by my radio show and recorded a couple acoustic songs for us. One of those songs? “Hero.”

When I see an article start with “emo sucks now but” I want to read it.

Floridian? band You Blew It! have a new record and a tour. Nice. Now Vancouver date (or even Seattle). Not Nice.

I have their 2014 record, Keep Doing What You’re Doing. Solid disc. I’m looking forward to hearing more new stuff from these guys.

WATERS covers the Smashing Pumpkins “Tonight Tonight” // @thisiswaters @smashingpumpkin @billy

Happy Friday music blog reading gangster. Wrapping my first week in Vancouver on CFOX. After the show I am racing to the ferry to get home to my babies and baby.

I’ll post one last one this week and get back to you probably on Monday.

San Francisco’s Waters did a cover of the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Tonight Tonight.”

Growing up I used to love the Smashing Pumpkins. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness came out when I was 15. I rocked that double album hard. Plus we were living in the era of music videos on the actual TV. The Pumpkins had more than one Much Mega Hit off that disc including the journey to the moon video for this cut.

The San Fran band Waters does a noble job of plugging into that 90s alt-rock vibe that I still like to hear. Their singles (and ep in general) are favourites on my playlists at home. I won’t be able to make the trip to Seattle for their February 10th show. Maybe one day they’ll venture further north or play the Emerald City on a weekend that works for me.

And since we’re loving the cover songs…. we’ll go a back a few months. Waters covering the Cranberries.
