I was thinking about fun older songs that might sound good on The Zone and I had to dust off one from The Replacements.

The Replacements continue to be a band that captures my imagination.

The song that might be a good primer to enter if you’ve never rocked the Replacements before would be their only “hit” single.  “I’ll Be You” came out in 1989 and you’ll find it on Don’t Tell A Soul.

Previous Replacements records could be considered alternative or even alt punk. they rarely made linear music videos, had challenges touring, were often times too drunk to perform and generally lived the life of under appreciated artists.

By the late 80s, original guitarist Bob Stinson had left the band.  He was largely the punk element to the band.  When it became time to record Don’t Tell a Soul… the sound had shifted to a more mature rock and roll style.

Don’t Tell a Soul isn’t my favourite Replacements record, but I do love the single.

Friday was payday for me, so it was off to Ditch to pick up a couple long players they had set aside.

I am slowly but surely collecting The Replacements discography as best I can, so I grabbed Hootenanny. As I have blogged before, I love the Meat Puppets so their important record II was on the shopping list.

My wife Coral, she had a mad lust to hear the ‘An Innocent Man’ album cut “Christie Lee” so we also got our hands on that record as well. I hope you enjoy listening to some selections off this week’s stack of wax.

Thank you for taking the time to listen to music.

DJ Notes

01) Billy Joel – “Uptown Girl”
02) Billy Joel – “Christie Lee”
03) The Replacements – “Color Me Impressed”
04) The Replacements – “Within Your Reach”
05) Meat Puppets – “Plateau”
06) Meat Puppets – “Aurora Borealis”

All the records I played on this mix are from 1983!  Whoa… the year Coral was born.

An Innocent Man is Billy Joel’s tribute to the music of his youth.  You’ll hear elements of doo-wop, motown, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

The set begins with “Uptown Girl,” Joel’s first UK #1 hit and a song he wrote about about his soon-to-be wife, Christie Brinkley.

Growing up, Coral had the cassette for this record and she is very familiar with all the songs.  She had a desire to hear the album cut “Christie Lee” (also a song named after his wife).

oddly, on iTunes you can buy greatest hits compilations of Billy Joel’s music, but not any albums?  weird, he’s like the opposite of Pink Floyd.

I am slowly collecting all the Replacements LPs I can get my hands on. Hootenanny is the Replacements 2nd full long player (on the podcast I incorrectly called it their first… but their first was Sorry Ma, forgot to take out the trash).

I kept it pretty safe with my selections off this record playing two of the generally more recognized songs.

“Within Your Reach” was include don the soundtrack for the most excellent film, Say Anything…

“I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.” – Lloyd Dobbler you know what’s up.

I finish this little set with a record I just had to own, Meat Puppets II.

I’ve blogged about my obsession with these guys before.  Not not going to pretend that playing vinyl records is “better” than my iTunes or laptop… but I do find a certain satisfaction to listening to the original format when I am trying to transport myself back to this distant times and places.  This is how the kids in 1983 experienced these songs…. errr II came out in 1984…

Yeah its getting a little out of hand.  I bought another record yesterday.  The Replacement’s Tim.

I have been on such a retro rock kick lately and part of it has to do with two things.

01) Coral renovated our living room which makes it so much more fun to just sit in.

02) I have a record player that works.  Since Russ cleaned my amp and Boitano hooked me up with one of his old Numark turntables… I’ve been enjoying rocking my music collection again.  I find that, like MP3, convenience wins.  If it is easy to listen, I will.

Coral and I will be sharing our collection in public on June 14th at Smiths.  On Monday nights Fatso and Yeti host an all vinyl night and I asked to have a go… they said yes!  So mark that date on your calendar.

This Replacements record is so great.  The Replacements are an old alternative rock band from Minneapolis.  I love listening to their music.  It is like a time machine that takes you back to the gritty side of town in the 80s.  To be young and a skid.  It makes me feel like old Meat Puppets.

I’ve read as much as I can find right now on the Replacements but wonder if there is a biography?  I sit and dream when I listen to Tim and think about their lives and what was going and who all the characters were to inspire these songs.  I want to know who Paul Westerberg (lead singer/songwriter) was kissing on the bus?  I want to know which bar he was a regular at and which friend got sent away by the police?

Their previous album, Let it Be, has even more heart breaking songs.  Who did he miss so much while on tour?  What did she do to make him so unsatisfied? was it even a she?  or life in general?

Lots of questions. I need to win the lotto max so I can finance the movie.

Go with yourself.

This is scary, a Sasquatch monster bearing down on you with Miga strapped to his back packing heat.

Yesterday I posted about Portland, Oregon’s The Thermals and their new song “Canada.”  Using that cut as a spring board, I jammed out a quick little 34 minute set to get you jazzed on some Olympic Hockey (or luge or biathlon or ice dancing or whatever).  Best part, no Gary Glitter!  Worst part, Rascal Flatts! I can’t wait, lets go….

01) The Thermals – “Canada”

The 2  minute fist pumper leads off the playlist and sets the tone.

02) Japandroids – “Sovereignty”

The Japandroids’ song has a line that rattles through my brain all the time.  And after watching my new favourite sport this morning, Biathlon, and all the rain it makes even more sense.

“Its raining in Vancouver, but I don’t give a fuck… because I’m far form home tonight.”

Is biathlon not the best sport? It combines two of the greatest things, insanely disciplined accurate killing technique and skiing!

03) Constantines – “Trans-Canada”

I searched “Canada” into my iTunes… now i have a lot of songs but I was surprised how few have the word Canada in them.  This is one of two.  The other being track one of our playlist.

Driving beat… it reminds me of driving the trans-Canada highway when I was younger lad.

“There is no short cut, there is no straight line.”

Whoa, they drove through Saskatchewan too!

04) Sloan – “The Rest of My Life”

When I first heard The Thermals “Canada” I immediately thought of Sloan, and this song in particular.

“One thing I know about the rest of my life, I know that I will be living in Canada.”

05) The Replacements – “I’ll Be You”

The Minnesota 80s alt-rockers must have spent some time in Winnipeg.  Must have…

“Lonely, I guess that’s where I’m from.  If was from Canada, then I’d best be called lonesome.”

Maybe that is some old 80s Canadiana?  Do we say lonesome?  sure, I do now.

06) The Tragically Hip – “Lonely End of the Rink”

Hockey metaphors explode in this song about Gord Downy’s days of playing minor hockey and being a goalie wishing he was joining the rush… and about his old man who’d come and hang out behind the net at the “lonely” end of the rink to cheer his boy on.

07) Tom Cochrane – “Big League”

Talking about kids and hockey, then we should be talking about one of Tom Cochrane’s most enduring hockey anthems.  This one is lot more somber.

08) Rascal Flatts – “Life is a Highway”

A throw back to my days working at Starbucks with Ashley, Michelle, Jayne and Rachel (well actually I shouldn’t lump Rachel in there, she always fired up good music! ha).  Rascal Flatts was on heavy rotation during those early morning hours slinging lattes in the suburbs.  I heard it so often it grew on me… and this song has maximum use of “Vancouver’s Lights” in the song.  Originally down by the man, Mr. Tom Cochrane… I decided to change gears and include the Rascal Flatts cover to spice up the end of the playlist a bit.

09) Moneyshot – “Blades of Steel”

The Canadian male hockey experience would not be complete without Moneyshots greatest creation about the game.  A song about working hard and having fun in Midget Triple A when the scout form Kamloops catches a game, and gives you shot at Junior.

10) Stompin’ Tom Conners – “The Hockey Song”

Its a bit of a cliche, so kill me.  Last song, time this playlist out to have this song playing just as the puck drops and their is no reason why Team Canada’s Olympic Women’s team can’t put 19 goals in the net!

Go with yourself.

Check out Quatchi's tattoo. Bad ass.

I punched up some Stooges tonight to sit down and research and discover and explore on the internet.  I had the album ‘Fun House‘ rotating the hardrive and wasn’t feeling it.  Its not bad, but just makes me want to listen to Lou Reed.

Then I noticed I also have their eponymous record that includes “I Wanna Be Your Dog.”  Now I get it… that song completely destroys.  What I wasn’t wholly prepared for was the 10 minute dirges… trippy.

I got on this late 60s, 70s alt rock kick because I have been enjoying the Replacements all weekend.  And well, one the time machines goes back to the 80s, you can’t not let it take you all the way.

The Replacements are always a good go to band for me.  Help me get to a nice relaxed state if I feel some anxiety or whatever.  But their real beauty is they jazz me on classic jangly alternative music of the by-gone era.

Coral and I are getting ready to take off to Las Vegas on Wednesday and September has been a trying month for me financially.  It wasn’t any one thing, but a series of small things that all conspired against me in September, any one of them alone would have been no big deal (and some even a little welcome) but with the steady grind it whacked my bank account right before the trip.  Couple that with the fact that almost every wedding expense seems to be just a little more than my initial budget and it had my heart palpating a bit days before the rip.

Coral and I still have our warchest and we’re good to go… but there was a brief moment in early September where we had some confidence that we’d exceed our own expectations and I guess not reaching a goal that I had worked at kinda hurt me.  Coral is more zen about it, she says we have our initial budget and so we’re good to go and get married.  AND we bought wedding bands!  Ha, we briefly flirted with the idea of dropping that and then last minute (early in the month when projections were good) added wedding bands.  We went to a store called “Old and Gold” by Coral’s work.  They sell pawned or “re purposed” jewelery.  I bought a wedding band that had another date inscribed on it.  I wanted to keep the old date, but Coral and the jeweler said I could (or should) not.  Too bad, I think it would have been neat to keep that old marker on the ring.

So we’re off to Vegas on Wednesday and I managed to get sick over the weekend.  I took a day today to rest and hang out with Madelyn.  I don’t want to get too sick and push myself and stress out for fear of looking like a Swine Flu victim before trying to cross the border into America.

Already it is time to set my eyes toward the future.  I have tried hard to keep my focus on October 11th and not a day ahead.  But sometimes my mind gets away with excitement.  Coral and I have been talking about starting a business as we usually do, but seeing as she’ll be unemployed (barring some sort of miracle) come December, we might as well get serious about it.  Slowly the concept is taking shape.  We’re not going to re-invent the wheel.  Just pick something and be the best at it.

Oh, and on the broadcasting front, we’re working on some things at The Zone which I hope will raise my community profile (and the boss man says *might* lead to some money) so fingers crossed for that project.

That’s all I got for tonight, just brainstorming and I’m hoping sitting in the sun in Vegas around the pool will help me flesh out some new creative ideas and projects and bring some focus.

I really want a pizza sub from subway, like really badly.

Go with yourself.

01) The Dudes
02) Japanadroids
03) The Airborne Toxic Event
04) The Replacements
05) Peter Gabriel
06) James Taylor
07) Phoenix
08) Reverend Horton Heat
09) Flo Rida
10) Pinback

Some of my faves spinning on the home hard drive according my Last FM page.

The new Dudes song “Pretty Lies” is so darn good, it has inspired me to fire up anything Dudes that I have at home, anytime I am at home.  The only reason I don’t listen to the dudes right now, is if I have Vancouver fuzz masters Japanadroids going, or “1901” from Phoenix.

Ringtones are dumbest (or maybe greatest?) invention.

Now, I value my money.  When I am walking down Douglas Street and some man puts out his hand to ask for money, I say, “sorry man, I value my money.”  You’d never catch me… maybe… lighting money on fire.  Wouldn’t happen.  Coral wanted to buy some jars today to put the coffee in to keep it fresh, they cost like, $3 or $4 bux maybe? maybe?  I was all, “no, I value my money.”  And after all that… the Airborne Toxic Event battles through my strong defense and I download “Sometime Around Midnight.”  The charge?  Three dollars and fifty cents.  What do I get?  15 seconds of the intro!  WTF?  I can download the song, all of it, in stunning MP3 quality for a buck!

Burned… I had to download another ringtone… so yeah, now when you phone, 15 seconds of “Panic Switch” blares at me and I’m $7 poorer.  And hopefully wiser.  RINGTONE!

I think, when I’m hanging out with the Airborne Toxic Event at the Sasquatch Music fesitval next weekend, I’ll mention something to them.

The Replacements are a band I play when I am sad.  I was sad after the Canucks lost to Chicago last week.

My cousin Monica is getting married!  whoa!  to a cop!  whoa.  Chris (the cop) is a good man, he showed me how to make a grown man cry with a simple maneuver to the nose.  Seriously, he made me cry, it works.  On their wedding website I A: RSVP’d (I’ll be rocking the stuffed chicken) and B: listened to some Peter Gabriel.  They have one of my favourite songs, “In Your Eyes” streaming.

James Taylor?  SWA?  I like him… but I don’t know why I played so much last week.  weird.

Phoenix is so hawt right now on The Zone @ 91-3.  Sometimes I bring my work home with me.  The video is that Youtube clip waiting for you at the top, great view… so if you skipped it because you think your time is more valuable than that three minute gem, your wrong, its not, click the video already.

The Rev came on after something else I was listening to, and I kept that party going.

Flo Rida.  Yeah. What?  I like him.

and I end my playlist with some Pinback, because…

I updated my Purevolume page today with a clip from my radio show.  A couple Fridays ago, I was laying on the couch watching the view as I do most mornings.  Basking in the warmth form my fake electrical fire, when my little baby girl Madelyn crawled over to the fake fire.  I  sprang to Ninja Dad action, but alas, too late.  Madelyn had planted her dirty baby palm on the glass to my fake fire.

I freaked!

But she did not wail, nay, she did not even whimper.

I thought I had witnessed a miracle.  Could my baby have super human powers?  The power to to touch fire and control its mystery?  Harnessing the raw power of fire to fight evil… or perhaps, to fight good?

I walked over to the fire and touched it myself.

I too felt no pain.  But I do not have super powers.  The fake fire is just that.  Fake.  And cold to the touch.  Now, how this cold fire creates heat?  The engineer who designed this feat of modern engineering, that man is a magician.

Coral has been having a bizarre lust for the Soul Asylum song “Misery” lately.

Today before our adventures around Esquimalt putting up campaign posters she commanded me to craft a “Misery” playlist.  And so, today I present and 90s-ish inspired riff rock radio requiem… or some sort of alliteration.

Coral’s Misery

01) Soul Asylum – “Misery”
02) The Replacements – “I’ll Be You”
03) Dishwalla – “Counting Blue Cars”
04) Live – “Selling the Drama”
05) Wallflowers – “The Difference”
06) Wallflowers – “6th Avenue Heartache”
07) K’s Choice – “Not An Addict”
08) Mad Season – “River of Deceit”
09) Alice in Chains – “Don’t Follow”
10) Ryan Adams – “To Be Young”
11) Against Me! – “Thrash Unreal”
12) Smashing Pumpkins – “Mayonnaise”
13) Buckcherry – “Lit Up”
14) Nada Surf – “Popular”
15) Eve 6 – “Promise”
16) Goldfinger – “Here In Your Bedroom”
17) Ugly Kid Joe – “Everything About You”
18) Hole – “Violet”
19) R.E.M. – “Whats the Frequency, Kenneth?”

Most these songs are form the 90s.  Actually, I think Against Me! and Ryan Adams are the only two from the modern rock era to make the grade.  hmmm.  I used the Genius to randomly select a playlist, then massaged it for time and cut out the bizarre shit and moved things around for flow.  Ilike the genius because it sometimes gets me thinking about songs I’d never think to listen to, or I overthink the playlist, when really I want some something groovy to drive to.  If you grew up in the suburbs and listened to mainstream commercial rock radio in the 90s, then you shouldn’t be a stranger to any of these bands… and most these songs were the “hits.”  Replacements maybe will be new for you.  But if you read my blog with any regularity, you’ll know that I love the Replacements and they will fit most any rock inspired playlist.
