Music NERD!

I wanted to have a show called Music NERD! that talked about the weird shit that goes on in music or at least dive into my favourite bands in a sickly dorky way.
Rozie (I think) sent this link. Weird.
Its Raining in Vancouver / but I don’t give a fuck / Cuz I’m far from home tonight

Once again the little stresses of my life were alleviated by Dr. Seth.
Infinity, They Keep Making More of It
“The problem with getting bigger is that getting bigger costs you. Not just in time and money, but in focus and standards and principles. Moving your way to the biggest part of the curve means appealing to an ever broader audience, becoming (by definition) more average.”
whoa right. That little paragraph hurts my head just thinking about it. You know what else hurts my head, Jars of Clay. What were people thinking… post grunge Radio circa 1995 was not a pretty time in rock and roll.
When I was a younger lad, we used to call those guys Jars of Gay… get it? cuz gay rhymes with clay. Not very PC but it was 1995, and as you can tell from popular modern rock, no one was really using their brain.
Time to pour a bath and tuck into “East of Eden.” That book makes me want to invent a time machine and travel back to the olden days… before post grunge. Live in a shack in the hills and drill water wells and have like 800 kids and wear overalls and say ma’am.
I am only a handful of chapters deep into the lives of the Trasks and Hamiltons but it is an amazing read. Author John Steinbeck says of his own work: “”It has everything in it I have been able to learn about my craft or profession in all these years (…) I think everything else I have written has been, in a sense, practice for this.”
That is the sort of book I want to read.
That’s all I got.

That’s all I got for now… I’ll flesh out the notes later with some commentary and links when I have more time. Right now I have to hop on the radio and do my show.
Jets Overhead are likely somewhere in China right now spreading the Canadian Rock and Rock ethos to a billion people. New Jets record is called No Nations and we’ll get our chance at it on June 2nd.
Way to Go Einstein messaged me on Facebook after noticing Fake Shark – Real Zombie on CRC 54. This band is also from the lower mainland but I was like, yup…send me some music! They have a bit of a Radiohead thing going on. I find the song to be very melodic and pleasant to listen to.
Trolling around Pitchfork, I read a review of Victoria’s Immaculate Machine that was not great. Pitchfork was rather “meh” on the whole High on Jackson Hill which would be fighting words of Shaynebo Bright reads the review (he LOVES Immaculate Machine).
Read: Pitchfork’s Review of Immaculate Machine
The Read: Pitchfork’s Review of Japandroids
Pitchfork might not like their accessible Victorian pop, but they lurves them some Terminal City fuzzy lo-fi rock. Japandroids have an interesting sound that maybe reminds me of Vic due Bloody Wilma? Maybe a little? I should get some Bloody Wilma for the podcast. They also remind me a bit of that band Fucked Up. Right, the song I picked for CRC 55 was the one the reviewer in Pitchfork highlighted as the best… so if you didn’t “get it” then maybe Japandroids are not for you… and in the 6 degrees of the Paper Cranes which CRC has turned into… Japandroids are on the same record label as The Paper Cranes. neat.

May 20th @ Lucky Bar
I met one of the guys in Flawed By Design a couple Tuesdays ago at The Clubhouse. He was friends with this guy I know named Brenden. We jibber jabbered… one thing leads to another and it turns out as is generally the case… he’s in a band, I have a radio show, we should be friends. An MP3 was sent and I really like it. Maybe a *little* dated with the screamo style, but i miss screamo so I’ll let it slide and give the song a thumb up!
Ended the show this week with another strong cut from Hollydene. Still don’t know too much abouyt the kids in t he Hollydene, we recently became BFF on Facebook, so maybe over time… I’ll learn their 5 favourite records on a desert island and their ABCs off Facebook notes and it’ll be like we went to high school together and used to party every week down by the river (no really, in high school, I used to party down by the river).
The march to 1,000 continues so please take a moment to help me and share a link for the podcast with a friend. Subscribing on iTunes or by RSS feed is huge too. Thank you so much for finding the show. And I am always looking for new music so if you’re in a band or have a favourite indie rocker you want to share, please email me at jeremy@thezone.fm .
OK, good talk.

Thank you for finding my blog and sharing the link! ***

Thursday, April 23rd, The Killers came to Victoria for first time since what? the summer of ’03?
This time, sold out in the Save On Foods Memorial Center and before the fantastic show, the Brandon and Ronnie came by the Zone suite for a chit-chat. Because of the mega loud sound check going on below, we took the interview outside on the deck to soak up the sunshine. The Killers thought it was cold, I disagreed and that set the tone for 6 wonderful minutes where we cover their stage setup and its Vegas influence, the upcoming covers record, Oingo Boingo, Danny Elfman’s influence on the song “Bones,” future real estate endeavors, alternate names for Killers songs, family life on the road, and Brandon’s wife’s favourite (or lack there of) Killers song.
Unfortunately off the mic, we talked about the Kanye West/Brandon Flowers collaberation (BULL SHIT! True story according to Mr. Flowers: Brandon was in Hawaii, walked past Kanye’s studio and popped in to meet him. Next day, Kanye releases crazy news to world. Brandon didn’t want to call him a liar on the radio because “Kanye is a nice guy.”), Camping in Oregon (Ronnie wants to buy property there), Cuervo Loran calling Ronnie the guitar player, Brandon’s kid and wife were at the show and expecting another son, they filmed some of the Vic show for possible future DVD projects and Brandon telling David Eleanor that Ronnie will talk Cuervo and my face off in the suite for hours after the interview (it wasn’t hours but the man likes to talk).
We never touched on the breakup rumours. (but this article says the collaboration with Kanye is true… so???)
Then the Killers hit the stage.
Highlight: Brandon saying “How you doing VICTORIA!?!”
Hilariouslight: Lead singer dude of Wild Light: “How you doing VANCOUVER!?!” (SWA?)

Wild Light Intrerview

Outside the Killers show last Thursday, this group of wandering minstrels were working the line. Turns out the boys were the band Wild Light, the group opening for the Killers.
This is was a woefully unprepared interview (thank you to David Eleanor for the super quick primer as the band wandered over). Someone filmed it, which I did not notice, and posted it to Youtube.
Thank you Scott for tracking down this video and sharing it with me.
I’ll see if I can post my Killers audio from the interview when I get into the radio station today.
Go with yourself.
