Man, look at that robot trying to laser gun those wild horses.  That just isn’t right at all.  at all.

Even that rainbow doesn’t lighten mood.  Not one bit.

This record cover that tells the tale of woe for these poor horses is from the Toronto electronic band Woodhands. What they have against the horses (or maybe for laser shooting robots) I don’t know, but I downloaded some songs they other day and they sound alright.

I downloaded a song called “Dissasembler.”

My computer world is a little rattled right now.  Coral and I went out to buy a new Macbook on Friday because the Toshiba is right screwed up and it died just before my DJ set.

I got the Macbook mostly ready for my DJ sets, need to still organize my playlists and the like.  And its a bit of a learning curve and awkward for me.  I have always been on a Microsoft PC so I’ll need to practice I guess.  And our internet at home has been weird.  The Mac doesn’t seem to be jiving on our WIFI.  When I get the Toshiba reformatted, I’ll be able to see if its a router or Mac thing.

One thing I am excited to do, is make podcasts from home!  The Mac comes with Garageband which is a program that allows me to record and edit audio.  fun.  I’ll just need a mic for home as the stock one in the Macbook sounds like suck.

OK good talk, Go with yourself.

We made it home last night from a fun and relaxing (yet also chaotic) trip to Vancouver/Coquitlam.

While in Coquitlam, Madelyn turned two-years-old!

Happy Birthday little monster.

It feels good to be back at work after a few days off.  I like being on the Zone, it is a fun job, but I did enjoy unplugging for awhile.  No blogs, twitter, facebook… any of that stuff.

I come back to work today feeling nostalgic for the simpler time and read a crazy article about the human voice and recorded sound.  The author posted some examples and one was a clip of the first ever known recording featuring a human voice.  Wow.

The Sandwich Project :: Week 1

Coral and Alix made me a sandwich birthday cake for my 27th birthday, cuz I love sandwiches so much!

Inspired by Krystal at Work’s commitment to packing her lunch to work 9 out of every 10 work days, I present The Sandwich Project.

What’s up?

I want to try and squeeze some money out of budget and make my life more streamlined.  Buying lunch at work is a waste.  As my old man likes to point out, he makes a kadrillion more dollars a year than I do, and he packs a lunch!

Krystal started packing her lunch at the end of ’09 to see if she could do it and what she might save.  I don’t recall seeing the savings, but for me it should be substantial.  I figure, maybe half of what I currently spend.

But why didn’t I do this before?

Lazy mostly, like to be spoiled… yup that too.  Cost, I wasn’t convinced that it would necessarily be cheaper… and for sure not a better quality of lunch.  But that is crazy bullshit that lives in my head.

I was buying sandwiches.  WTF right?  Bread, meat, cheese, veggies.  I can do that.

Krystal allowed herself a bought lunch on paydays.  I get two of those a month.  Sounds like a fair play.

A roadblock that I throw up is waste.  I hate waste.  Food waste is like The Olympics… I am lighting money on fire.  I don’t just hand my money to the garbage can normally (Madelyn however, well she’s a stasher and if she finds my wallet, money walks to weird places).

Before I would get all gung-ho on “packed lunches,” go to the grocery store, buy all this stuff and seriously, days later I’d stop and buy lunches, then the end of the week I’d be tossing rotting goo into the garbage bin.

David Eleanor turned me on to the big Tupperware thing with a drip tray.  Lock your lettuce in there, lives forever.  At least a work week.  Pre-chop some veggies, Subway style and lock them in airtight container in the fridge, they should last too.

Quality is the last obstacle… but heck, I was a sandwich artist professionally for years! I am the Chris Pronger of Sandwich, I can rock a sandwich.  What sets the restaurants apart from you and me, I believe… is bread.  That might take some time to dial in.  I like Bond’s Bakery, but they aren’t near my house… so this week, its Safeway Sandwich Kaisers and French baguettes.

So here is the plan.  Each week, I’ll design my menu (likely the same thing every day, at least to start), buy my groceries for lunch, and make it and eat it… then blog it.  My goal will be to get my cost-per-lunch down to $5 a day.  If the 12-year-olds making sneakers can live off like $2 a day, I can live off a $5 meal.

Likely my sandwiches will be pretty basic to get going.  I hope to learn to make more interesting subs and the like as I progress.  Make the microwave my bitch.

Week 1 Grocery Bill

.870 kg Trail Mix = $6.87
340 grams Turkey Breast = $8.13
1 cucumber = $2.29
Red lettuce = $1.49
4 Granny Smith Apples  = $2.95
mmm Horseradish Cheese = $3.63
Almond Granola Bars = $3.99
Artisan Buns and Rolls = $1.28

I think that is everything.  After taxes and my Safeway discount it worked out to $29.61 for 3 work lunches and a Saturday.  Already above $5 a day.

BUT I bought more trail mix than I need and more granola bars, so next Monday will be my real test.  I might be able to do better on lunch meat too.  IN the summer veggies will be in season and I hope that helps a bit too.

Coffee and water are provided at my work, so water it must be (I might pack some change for a pop or chocolate sometimes too).

So, Turkey and cheese bunes with lettuce and cucumber, with an apple, trail mix and a granola bar.  That’s lunch this week.  Next update, Wednesday when we’re back from Vancouver.  Just a two day work week to pack a lunch.

Go with yourself.

CRC 91 begins with some new music.  A punky one from a band called Class of ’84 then Dan Politano sent a new recording over as well.  The second half of the show features a couple BC bands taking part in the Sasquatch! Music Festival in Washington State.  Vancouver’s fuzzy hyper-blogged about Japandroids and Victoria’s  ice cool and atmospheric Jets Overhead.  Neat-O gang.  Thank you for downloading my podcast.

Come and get it: Capital Rock City #91

Thank you for finding Capital Rock City, my weekly rock and roller podcast.  Remember to please subscribe to CRC on this RSS feed or by searching in the iTunes store for Capital Rock City.

DJ Notes

01) Class of ’84 – “Sick City”
02) Dan Politano – “Maybe”
03) Japandroids – “Art Czars”
04) Jets Overhead – “No Nations”

This party gets started with some new punk rock.  Classic sound, straight ahead, new band.  Class of ’84.

I had trouble tracking down a website for them (turns out there is an Irish band with the same name).  Whatever, Myspace is not punk rock.  This picture IS punk rock.

SWAGed from Jono's Facebook page. Class of '84 at the Quadra House.

Dan Politano, its been awhile friendo.  After the punk, we calm it down for another alt-lite from the Sidney, VI rocker (are you from Sidney Dan?).

Today (or I guess yesterday) the Ear Candy blogged leaked the Sasquatch festival line-up.  Today it was official so I thought I’d include a couple CRC darlings to end the podcast.

Japandroids are Terminal Rock City’s fuzz heroes and one of THE MOST BLOGGED ABOUT BANDS!  Whoa, I iz helper them.

“Art Czars” is part of the Japandroids 2010 7″ singles series.

Download it for free! (I did, TWICE)

Czars totally sucked… but I think history will judge Soviet Russia as worse… so….

They *might* also be talking about the village in Alberta… which would be mighty, but doubtful.  (hmmm, now I kinda want to go there.)

This tight little podcast ends with Victoria journeymen (and women) group, Jets Overhead.  Jets rocked the Bonnaroo last year, Coachella later and now Sasquatch in May!  Our growing little army of Island invaders will all need to make a date to converge at whatever stage they are at when they play and burn one down for them.  So great.

Thank you for rocking the Zone and for choosing my podcast.  You totally rule and Russian Czars totally suck (but they suck less than Soviet Communism!  COLD WAR WIN!)

Go with yourself.

“[The Sasquatch! Festival is] a pick-your-poison selection for your party at the edge of the earth.”-SPIN

The 2010 Sasquatch! Music Festival will proudly feature the recently reunited Pavement, Massive Attack, My Morning Jacket, Ween, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Kid Cudi, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Band of Horses and many others. With The Office‘s Craig Robinson and The Daily Show‘s Rob Riggle, this year’s Sasquatch! Festival also presents the best in up-and-coming comedic acts. Please see below for the complete festival lineup and ticket information.

Sasquatch! returns to The Gorge in Quincy, WA May 29-31 (Memorial Day Weekend) following early sellouts and rave reviews the past several years. Festival tickets are available at sasquatchfestival.com and Ticketmaster.com. Known for its bucolic location as well as its programming zeitgeist, the Sasquatch! Festival marks its ninth year at The Gorge, a concert venue built in the Columbia River Gorge and offering spectacular views of the river canyon. Tickets go on sale Saturday February 20 at 10 a.m. PST.

Festival creator Adam Zacks founded Sasquatch! in 2002 with the aim of constructing an event that catered to the eclectic tastes of voracious music enthusiasts. Zacks personally curates the lineups for each Sasquatch! Festival, hand-picking the diverse array of artists. “It’s our goal each year to present a fresh lineup that reflects the independent spirit of the Pacific Northwest, respects the artists and audience, and celebrates the grandeur of The Gorge.”

The Sasquatch! Festival has established a tradition of presenting critically acclaimed emerging artists alongside established headliners. Previous lineups have spanned a broad spectrum of genres from rock to hip-hop, electronic to singer-songwriters; past performers include R.E.M. Coldplay, Kanye West, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Wilco, The Flaming Lips, The Cure, Björk, and M.I.A. The festival also has a history of incorporating comedy including performances by Flight of The Conchords, Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Silverman, and many more.

Also included on this year’s agenda are continued greening initiatives with Esurance, the title sponsor for the 2010 festival. For the past three years, the auto insurance provider has teamed up with Sasquatch! to promote a greener festival. By increasing sustainable practices at the Gorge, including an expanded recycling program, eco-friendly signage, and energy-efficient lighting, they were able to reduce the overall carbon footprint at the venue as compared to previous years. As this year’s title sponsor, Esurance continues its drive toward a planet-friendly festival by offering numerous ridesharing options with carpool partner, Zimride. Beginning with the launch party in February and following through with the festival itself in May, Esurance makes it easy for folks to share a ride and minimize environmental impacts created by such a large event.

bah, I’m so stupid.  I totally flaked on the fact that one of my favourite bands of 2009, The Rural Alberta Advantage, is coming to Victoria tomorrow.  AND its now sold out.

Oh I am a sad panda bear.  sad emoticon, go! 😦

But in positive news (unless of course its sold out), Four Tet will be in Vancouver on February 24th and I’ll be in Coquitlam celebrating Madelyn’s second year of life and the 2010 Olympics.  If it can be done and I can be on a ferry early enough Thursday morning, I *might* try and go.  I say might because the logistics  could be more hassle than the value.

But I read a great interview with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) that just re-ignited my love for his style of electronic beats. (and the dude went to high school with the man that is Burial?  SWA?)

Check out this quote:

Pitchfork: On the new album, there’s a track called “Pablo’s Heart”, which is 11 seconds of a swooshing, pulsing beat. Is that title to be taken literally?

Four Tet: It is Pablo’s heartbeat. Pablo is my godson. His father recorded the heartbeat on his mobile phone at the doctor’s office and sent me the recording. His parents were coming to see a live show I was doing, so I took that sound and played it through the sound system. It was really loud and sounded like a mad modular synth when the bass was pumped up. It was this really crazy scene. His heart at the time was probably the size of a pea and I was using it to make this immense sound. He’s not very old, so he won’t understand when he sees the record. I put it on as a little present to him.

Pitchfork: It’s your Herbert moment. Does that have any relation to the end of the track “Plastic People”, when it sounds like there’s a kid hitting some bells or percussion? Is that Pablo as well?

Four Tet: I was working on music while staying with some friends of mine, and their little girl Opal was playing this little toy piano and I recorded it. If I listen back to my old record, Rounds or something, an album I made over a period of a year or so, it’s almost like a diary for me. I don’t think I listen to it like anybody else would. For me, it’s about all the memories from that time, how I made each song, where I was and what was going on. I always put little references to my life in the music I’ve made. It’s no different with this record, I’ve just done a couple of things more explicit this time, like calling the track “Pablo’s Heart”.

In the past it would have been buried and I wouldn’t have told anyone about it. I wanted him to have a little gift almost, a sound off the record. There aren’t lyrics or anything in my music. I don’t have any explicit thing for people to read into, so I like putting a lot of personal touches in the music. If I bare my soul in bits and make it personal, I think people can sense that when they hear it. I don’t know what it is. People read into the music. I have a feeling that they can believe that I’m trying to put some emotion forward. It’s not just some technical exercise.

I love it, so much exciting stuff to try and pull out of the music.  But its also interesting for me to read about the things that are real, that this artist is pouring into his music.  It was a very good interview if you care… read it.

***

I’ve been blogging about music lots lately.  I think that is a good thing.  I don’t quite get as many hits on my music posts generally.  But at the same time, my biggest days have been music posts and my catalog posts seem to be the ones that still get discovered.  That is kinda neat.  I’ve always had a challenge with that.  I like music and talking about music, but it doesn’t generate too much emotion in most people that find my blog.  Oh well… its my blog.

The other thing I’ve been trying to feel is some zen.  Getting tired of fighting with people about shit all the time.  Twitter turns the hyper engine on overdrive.  I’ve been catching myself a few times and not posting stuff I want to say because I weigh out whether its worth the debate and drama.

Focus is good.  There are some other things I want to start working on too, but it will have to wait… always waiting.

A couple things I am waiting for, Vancouver this weekend and Sasquatch in May.  They announce the line-up tomorrow.   Can’t wait.

Quatchi has got to eat too you know... http://www.homelessnation.org/node/17263

Something that is kinda buttering my biscuit is this business in Vancouver of restaurants adding the tip automatically to the bill.  tacky central Vancouver downtown restaurants.

Read All About It! Vancouver Sun

“We are doing this to ensure we take care of our servers. It isn’t business as usual down here. The usual gratuity [expected from Canadian or American customers] ranges from 15 to 20 per cent so it’s not gouging,” Nancy Celetti VP marketing for Earls.

awww, its about the servers?  really… how about you pay them a living wage if you valued their work.  Then the tip would be just that, a tip.  After the Olympics, put them back down to $8/hour…

I’ll be downtown next weekend for the Olympics and if it comes time to enjoy a pint or a bite and there is an automatic gratuity I’ll be pushing off to the next restaurant or packing a lunch.  I guess that is freedom.  You can gouge tourists and I can eat elsewhere.

Go with yourself.

This is scary, a Sasquatch monster bearing down on you with Miga strapped to his back packing heat.

Yesterday I posted about Portland, Oregon’s The Thermals and their new song “Canada.”  Using that cut as a spring board, I jammed out a quick little 34 minute set to get you jazzed on some Olympic Hockey (or luge or biathlon or ice dancing or whatever).  Best part, no Gary Glitter!  Worst part, Rascal Flatts! I can’t wait, lets go….

01) The Thermals – “Canada”

The 2  minute fist pumper leads off the playlist and sets the tone.

02) Japandroids – “Sovereignty”

The Japandroids’ song has a line that rattles through my brain all the time.  And after watching my new favourite sport this morning, Biathlon, and all the rain it makes even more sense.

“Its raining in Vancouver, but I don’t give a fuck… because I’m far form home tonight.”

Is biathlon not the best sport? It combines two of the greatest things, insanely disciplined accurate killing technique and skiing!

03) Constantines – “Trans-Canada”

I searched “Canada” into my iTunes… now i have a lot of songs but I was surprised how few have the word Canada in them.  This is one of two.  The other being track one of our playlist.

Driving beat… it reminds me of driving the trans-Canada highway when I was younger lad.

“There is no short cut, there is no straight line.”

Whoa, they drove through Saskatchewan too!

04) Sloan – “The Rest of My Life”

When I first heard The Thermals “Canada” I immediately thought of Sloan, and this song in particular.

“One thing I know about the rest of my life, I know that I will be living in Canada.”

05) The Replacements – “I’ll Be You”

The Minnesota 80s alt-rockers must have spent some time in Winnipeg.  Must have…

“Lonely, I guess that’s where I’m from.  If was from Canada, then I’d best be called lonesome.”

Maybe that is some old 80s Canadiana?  Do we say lonesome?  sure, I do now.

06) The Tragically Hip – “Lonely End of the Rink”

Hockey metaphors explode in this song about Gord Downy’s days of playing minor hockey and being a goalie wishing he was joining the rush… and about his old man who’d come and hang out behind the net at the “lonely” end of the rink to cheer his boy on.

07) Tom Cochrane – “Big League”

Talking about kids and hockey, then we should be talking about one of Tom Cochrane’s most enduring hockey anthems.  This one is lot more somber.

08) Rascal Flatts – “Life is a Highway”

A throw back to my days working at Starbucks with Ashley, Michelle, Jayne and Rachel (well actually I shouldn’t lump Rachel in there, she always fired up good music! ha).  Rascal Flatts was on heavy rotation during those early morning hours slinging lattes in the suburbs.  I heard it so often it grew on me… and this song has maximum use of “Vancouver’s Lights” in the song.  Originally down by the man, Mr. Tom Cochrane… I decided to change gears and include the Rascal Flatts cover to spice up the end of the playlist a bit.

09) Moneyshot – “Blades of Steel”

The Canadian male hockey experience would not be complete without Moneyshots greatest creation about the game.  A song about working hard and having fun in Midget Triple A when the scout form Kamloops catches a game, and gives you shot at Junior.

10) Stompin’ Tom Conners – “The Hockey Song”

Its a bit of a cliche, so kill me.  Last song, time this playlist out to have this song playing just as the puck drops and their is no reason why Team Canada’s Olympic Women’s team can’t put 19 goals in the net!

Go with yourself.

Check out Quatchi's tattoo. Bad ass.

Its a power pop explosion from Portland indie darlings The Thermals.

Have a listen:
The Thermals – “Canada”

Ok, its is a very basic, balls to the floor power pop anthem.  Some hipsters were barking all over the internet because they expect more from The Thermals, but its better than anything Weezer has put out since Pinkerton and at least as good as most Sloan songs.

The lore behind the song is neato gang:

Don’t get us wrong – Buffalo, NY is a swell American town. But it’s not the easiest city to play, ask any band! So when The Thermals, on a recent tour, found themselves staring down the barrel of a less-than-spectacular night in Buffalo, The Thermals comforted themselves with the thought that the next day they were headed for CANADA. Toronto, to be exact, where they would headline an amazing sold out show at The Horseshoe Tavern. Sitting in the van in Buffalo, Thermals guitarist and singer Hutch Harris picked up a guitar and strummed a few chords, and sang a few lines about going to CANADA. Kathy Foster walked up and sang “Whoa Whoa-Oh Whoa!” as if on cue. Drummer Westin Glass set a fat beat to it at soundcheck et voila, “Canada”. Seriously, I’m not making this up. I mean, listen to the song. It doesn’t sound like it took The Thermals longer than half an hour to write “Canada”. But therein lies its brilliance! Totally off the cuff, yet totally sincere, “Canada” is an instant classic, a raucous, joyous ode to our brothers and sisters to the north. CANADA! Where everyone is funny, friendly and ready to have a beer or seven with you. CANADA! Where we’ll have everything we need! CANADA! The country we aspire to be.

and about the lyrics:

The lyrics to “Canada” contain the line “Sittin’ all alone / Pick up the phone and call Ramona / Go to Canada”. Ramona refers to Thermals sound woman Anna Lockwood, who sometimes goes by the name Ramona Flowers, a character in the Canadian comic book Scott Pilgrim, by Canadian author Bryan Lee O’Malley. Scott Pilgrim is published by Oni Press, who share a hometown of Portland, Oregon with The Thermals. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, a live-action film adaptation of the comic starring Canadian actor Michael Cera, is due in August of this year. Scott Pilgrim is named after a song by the Canadian band Plumtree.

I have a mad man crush for the Japandroids.

The Vancouver band will be releasing five limited press vinyl singles this year because they won’t be able to manufacture the time to record a follow up for Post Nothing (2009).

I’ve been streaming the first single “Art Czars” all afternoon.  I am not allowed to play with my credit card right now, or I so would have pre-ordered the 7 inch single.  Wait?  I gotta fix my record player first… THEN I’ll pre-order the single.  Pay day is what, the 15th?  OK, remember to fix the record player.

Listen to: “Art Czars

The Saquatch Festival at Gorge, Washington will be releasing their line-up on February 16th and The Zone will have the details (and tickets?  maaaaaaaaaaaaybe) during my show.

I reckon to hear the news that the Japandroids will be playing the festival.  They were supposed to play last year but for some reason had to cancel.  I do know of at least one Victoria band playing… but I better not spoil the surprise.

Oh, so looking forward this little holiday in late May.

Go with yourself.
