A group of Victoria musicians team up to perform as the Cadboro Collective for http://nakedjams.com.  A very pretty song that fits in well with the harmonies and melodies of The Gruff… who oddly, are breaking up?

Did you ever watch that Aussie outback epic, Australia?  Terrible film… well not terrible but also not good.  In that movie our protagonist has to drive some cattle to Darwin.  Darwin is also home to Mindil Beach and during the dry season (in the tropics that have a dry season) Mindil Beach is home to the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. Go wikipedia!  I guess sunset was a word too far for MBM… so that go dropped.  Good party sound.  Check out Mindil Beach Markets when they play a fundraiser for Haiti on March 26th at the Victoria Event Center.  Punch up the podcast and listen for how to win a pair of tickets.

Hot Hot Heat were dropped from their label, Warner (or at least we think they are/were).  C’est dommage because Hot Hot Heat might be on to their best music of their career.  So what Canadian band is Warner putting their marketing might behind? Hail the Villain.  BARF central.

The new HHH record is called, oddly enough, Future Breeds.  Fun Fact, the new HHH bass player is Parker Bossley of Pol Plastino championed band, Fake Shark – Real Zombie!

Treelines might feature an alumni of former Zone band of the Month, The Greatest Explorers in the world.  I think.  What I do know, they are playing Lucky Bar on March 20.  If I can make that show, I’ll NEED a Treelines t-shirt.  Like NEED.

The show ends with a band that gives me an Armchair Cynics kind of vibe.  A very polished, high octane pop rock song.  I don’t know a ton about these cats…

Capital Rock City #93 // Eat the Weeds, Look Medusa, Acres of Lions, Tegan and Sara (DJ Murge Remix)

CRC 93 starts off with one of the more interesting indie rockers I’ve heard in awhile.  The artist goes by Eat the Weeds. She has some world beat type stuff going on.  Nanaimo metal band Look Medusa have a terrible band bio write up, but fun straight forward epic style of hard rock.  I almost hear a little Fu Manchu in there?  I hope so, I like the Fu.  My friend Tyson got a job touring with Florida punks Against Me! I interviewed him last week at the start of their cross Canada tour and then launch into Tyson’s band Acres of Lions.  The show ends with a remix of Tegan and Sara done by local Victoria DJ Murge.  Murge taught me at DJ school!  what a guy.

Man, I hate being the dick, but I had to come down on Hey! Medusa’s band bio.  They’re not the first band I’ve had to call out on the podcast for terribleness… but maybe, just maybe the last?  Anyways, here we go.  Maybe you got some thoughts, maybe you’re a writer and can send the boys some help.

Look, Medusa! is a schizophrenic mixture of sweet metal licks and powerful pop sensibility, packed to the rim with so much emotion that you’ll need a lifetime prescription for Prozac.

It all started as a basement metal band in the Summer of ’06, dedicating half of every band practice to catching the latest episodes of Beverly Hills 90210. Now Look, Medusa! is committed to creating a unique and resonant sound to identify with what each of us has gone through, both collectively and individually. As we’ve grown, so too has our sound. As our minds have evolved, so too have our awesome rock-related superpowers.

Right now, Look, Medusa! is recording for their upcoming album at Victoria’s Infinity Studios with Adam Sutherland. The eclectic mix will delve into every musical taste the band has experienced to date, to prove that they’ve got what it takes to escape the island and make it.

I got a few problems with the bio, but chiefly… who even watches 90210?  They do episodes on the dangers of Sexting?  Shenae Grimes is pretty adorable I guess… if you like that sorta thing, but an inspiration for your brand of metal?

That said, a pretty enjoyable, straight forward metal-type sound.

Class of 84’s new song is called “Old Bones, New Blood” and this bratty punk tracks is about getting old and loving to skate!

CO84’s Jono McGee helped produce Start With A Cobra and these firecrackers are also singing about skating, I think.

We have a new band of the month at the Zone, they are called The Perfect Trend.  This Nanaimo screamo-type band will play Evolution on March 25th!

The show ends with former ZBOTM Maurice.  They played live on The ZAS last week and I included the performance on this here podcast.

The new Zone Band of the Month is The Perfect Trend.  The Nanaimo band is working hard trying to elevate their game to rock star status.  So far they have opened for a ton of bands, traveled and toured everywhere.  Planning a trip to Toronto for Canadian Music Week and hanging out with Adam Sutherland recording a new record.  We’ll get a chance to see them March 25th at Evolution.

The show ends with a liver performance form Maurice.  Mike Devlin wrote a good article about their trials, challenges and successes.

Maurice is off on a cross-Canada tour with the Armchair Cynics.  Awesomesauce.

Next week on CRC 93, talking about Tyson Yerex and his move to Against Me for their Canadian Tour, Jeff Kalesnikoff is playing with Theset and we’ll check out a new band called Look Medusa!

CRC 91 begins with some new music.  A punky one from a band called Class of ’84 then Dan Politano sent a new recording over as well.  The second half of the show features a couple BC bands taking part in the Sasquatch! Dan Politano, its been awhile friendo.  After the punk, we calm it down for another alt-lite from the Sidney, VI rocker (are you from Sidney Dan?).

Today (or I guess yesterday) the Ear Candy blogged leaked the Sasquatch festival line-up.  Today it was official so I thought I’d include a couple CRC darlings to end the podcast.

Japandroids are Terminal Rock City’s fuzz heroes and one of THE MOST BLOGGED ABOUT BANDS!  Whoa, I iz helper them.

This tight little podcast ends with Victoria journeymen (and women) group, Jets Overhead.  Jets rocked the Bonnaroo last year, Coachella later and now Sasquatch in May!  Our growing little army of Island invaders will all need to make a date to converge at whatever stage they are at when they play and burn one down for them.  So great.

Capital Rock City #90 // Pocket Kings, Cairo, Maurice

Some local YYJ hip-hop leads off this week’s Capital Rock City podcast.  Hip-hop is not my strong point, so I chose the songs based on some superficial traits.  The first song is called “Saints Marched” and New Orleans Saints won the super bowl, fun.  The second song I selected is called “Speak and Listen (Green Light DJ Speedyshoes Remix).”  The music video features my friend Chucky. Nice.  A couple weeks ago I was talking about a former Zone Band of the Month called The Greatest Explorers in the World.  They are now done, but all the old musicians are now in other bands, Cairo is one of them.  The show ends this week with current Zone Band of the Month, Maurice.  Thank you for downloading my weekly Victoria podcast.

There is a local Victoria hip-hopster group called Outer City.  They have a mix-tape they made and Eric from the label sent me the link to check it out.  Its a free download!

I don’t really know too much about hip hop. I think Jay Z is boring and he’s considered the best… so download and have a listen and you tell me.

A couple weeks ago I talked about an old Band of the Month called The Greatest Explorers in the World.  I always remember liking the group but like a lot of UVic bands… they are here today, graduate and are gone tomorrow.  The boys from TGEITW have all moved on but are still making music.  One former member is now in Vancouver making music as Cairo.

Finally I revisit one of my fave Vic rockers bands, Maurice.  they are the Zone band of the month for February.

Coral said to me the other day, “hey weren’t Maurice JUST the Zone band of the month, like a couple months ago?”

I said, “no… you’re just getting old.  It was a few years ago but as you get older, everything feels just like yesterday.”

“But I’m only 27!” she protested.

“yeah that’s when it starts.”

man, now our parents make so much sense.

My staycation be damned!  You’re getting a podcast.  The reason I was jazzed to come into the Capital Rock City studio so late on a Monday night was to share with you an interesting find.  My wife, Coral, was digging through some old boxes and found a burned copy of Vancouver band In Medias Res’ first ever rock show.  They performed “Best Kept Secret,” which is a crushingly great song.  Vince Vaccaro sent in a demo he is working on and the show ends with some harder rock from Black Hat Villain and new music from Great White Shark. When I first got into radio many moons ago, I had an indie rocker program on CiTR in Vancouver and my first paid gig was a place called CFUN.  CFUN was a groovy AM radio station back in the Paleolithic era, but by the time I was there it was basically the a place for infomercials, Dr. Laura and ghost stories at night.  My job was to punch a button or two every thirty minutes and for that I was paid the princely sum of $8 and hour.  The best of times.

I did this while attending broadcasting school at BCIT where I knew a guy named Ash Poon.  He applied for a job at CFUN and the boss man asked if I knew Ash and if he would make a decent worker… I said basically, “well he’s not meth addict… I don’t think,” and he was hired.  It also turned out that Ash was in a new band with a very progressive post rock vibe called In Medias Res and one day he left me a CD of a demo that they put together from a live show to play on my radio show or maybe it was to book a concert at the John B. Pub… either way, that CD survived and you are hearing my all time fave IMR song, “Best Kept Secret,” from their first ever love show… at a church I think?  At the beginning of the podcast you hear Ash about to say “all honour to the builder,” but he isn’t sure the mic is hot and yeah, it didn’t start with the bang that I am sure a young Mr. Poon would have liked.

Forestry have recorded a new self-titled long players so they came by the CRC studio for a chit chat and to share some new music.  They also play one from one of their favourite Vancouver bands Ladyhawk and reflect on an old Zone Band of the Month called Greatest Explorers in the World.  Then we talk about who might have been the greatest explorer in the world?  Henry Hudson?  SWA?

Zoinks, I forgot to put a little sauce on the old vocal tracks and I am feeling sick, so they sound a little far away.

Johnny Tango is one of my new fave Vic rockers.  Dave sent me their “Hills” version 2, recorded by Mr. Jason Cook at Adam’s Infinity studio and I think this is a mighty song.  A great chorus, already stuck in my head and I sing all the time. “Where I come from, there are no hills.”  Total sci-fi nerd alien stuff going on here.

Dead Eyes Open are the Zone Band of the Month for the wet and warm month of January.  We’ll get a chance to see them perform their zombie apocalypse inspired rock at Evo on January 28th.  DEO are not the first artistic group to use the moniker “Dead Eyes Open” for a zombie product.  Check out this comic about a man who becomes a living dead but also has the headache of raising a kid and married life.  Oy-Vey!

Also from the land of comics, Rorschach.  He was kinda of a big deal in The Watchmen.  Or maybe the boys were into Swiss towns?

Rorschach has a sound that reminds me of blues meets desert outlaw rock.

My final selection this week is Vancouver band with roots in Victoria.  When my sister used to work at the Whitespot on Quadra at MacKenzie.  The hostess was a young lovely named Kelly who we used to always try and hook up with our brother Matt.  No dice on the love connection, but Kelly did join a neat dreamy kinda rock band called Beautiful Places and Faces.  Lots of audio space, harmonies, pretty.
