beach-slang-b-and-w

I knew it would be a good day when I woke up and threw on my JAPANDROIDS t-shirt. Trolling twitter and this tweet came down the feed.

Well hey now. Beach Slang covering one of my favourite band’s bestest songs! Alright.

The song is part of a compilation record from Polyvinyl Records called Polyvinyl Plays Polyvinyl. The 20th anniversary record features bands on their roster covering other bands on the roster.  Beach Slang plugging in and turning up JAPANDROIDS “Younger us” is pretty much a layup.

We’re getting close to Beach Slang’s sophomore album, A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings, out on September 24th.

JAPANDROIDS begin their four night home stand at The Cobalt in Vancouver on October 5th.

Well intrepid music blog reader….I don’t just share soundcloud streams on Hype Machine, I am also a commercial radio DJ. I’ve been working in alternative or modern rock radio since 2003 (and five years before that on college radio). I have a big ole space in my heart for radio songs and wanted a place to collect a few songs that “I used to play on the radio all thew time.” But now they rarely come up. So here’s my new music podcast, Maximum Warp, Engage. The show is gunna be songs from Y2K to 2009. I’ll likely focus on modern rock radio hits, but you’ll be subjected to some CanCon forgotten wonders and the occasional Thursday cut. I was on the radio in Victoria and now Vancouver….so it’ll be my take based on recollections of West Coast Canadian Radio. If you have any feedback or requests for a song to dig up…don’t be shy. Comment or tweet or email me. It’s all good.

And depending on how I feel and where my energy is at… Alternative to What?…my meditations on new/charting modern rock might come back for an new episode.

fatelvis

So you’re going to the Pacific National Exhibition and you just don’t have time to mess around. I feel you.  Here are the three best things to eat at the 2016 PNE.

01) The Legendary Pickle Dog from Chicky’s Chicken. It’s a hot dog, in a pickle, then corn dogged. I enjoy mine with mustard, the kid likes it with ketchup.

02) The Fat Elvis from Rocky Point Ice Cream. It’s chocolate ice cream, banana, peanut butter, jam all smushed in a brioche bun and grilled. Messy. Good.

03) Delicious beer from the Craft Beer Fest. All that walking and show home viewing will make you thirsty. Visit the Craft Beer Festival for a tasty beer brewed right here in British Columbia.

Lately my favourite beer has been from Richmond’s Fuggles & Warlock. D&D fantastical branding, yummy Strawberry Wit.

The next BEST time to hit the PNE will be Tuesday, August 30th for Monster Truck.

And now, here’s a picture of The Sheepdog who played the CFOX presents show on the 23rd.

aquilo

Aquilo is the super chill duo from the super chill village of Silverdale, which looks to my ignorant eyes…as a town in a park in England? Must be nice.

I’ve blogged about these bros before, I like their soft sounds.

New song is called “You’re Like Me.”

Today is a perfect one in Vancouver. I went to Storm Crow Alehouse on Broadway to tape an episode of their podcast. My walk into the city after was glorious.

I’ll let you know when the podcast goes live and maybe you’ll throw it a listen for me? We yap some Dungeons and Dragons, Stranger Things, James Corden, Pokemon, beer.

the hip

Last night, through an incredible turn of events, Coral and I scored box seats to The Tragically Hip’s final show! After some frantic texts and calls to Grandpa and Grandma to secure childcare we were crammed into Rogers Arena for the legendary performance.

Today I rolled into CFOX and had a chance to interview Jay from USS about their upcoming single “Work Shoes.” But I also asked Human Kebab if USS has ever played a showed with The Hip. The answer is yes and the story is great. Also Jann Arden was there.

Here is that Hip set from Canada Day in 2013 at London’s Trafalgar Square. I *think* Ash is getting turfed around 15:30.

We also talked about the new song called “Work Shoes.” The guys in USS are working pros and the new song takes them back to working manual labour jobs around the Toronto area, making money to live, party and fund being artists.

Better Call Becky with the good hair….

Beyonce released her 6th album on Saturday night. It began with an HBO special for her visual album. On the record Beyonce is dealing marital breakdown, infidelity, sadness…and then reconciliation, healing and empowerment. There is a lot going on with the record sonically.
Also a huge selection of samples, features and guest writing credits… The song “Hold Up” has Beyonce riffing off an old Yeah Yeah Yeah’s lyric from their song “Maps”, that was changed up a tiny bit in a 2011 tweet from Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend.

One of her songs features the ferocious guitar of Jack White and a sample of Led Zeppelin. Check out “Don’t Hurt Yourself.” It’s a rock and roll jammer.

Big Alt Rock news today… Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam covers the Batman theme with his adorable 7-year-old daughter Harper. Now I’m not saying he copied my son Jack, but I will say he was clearly inspired by.

4/20 and Vancouver are like peanut butter and marshmallows. Yesterday was festive in the Terminal City as the entire suburbs emptied out to Sunset Beach to blaze.

It was a new venue from years past where it was traditionally held at the Art Gallery.

I guess a few folks didn’t check their emails…and went to the Art Gallery anyway.
