Last weekend, I traveled to Sequim, Washington.  What a crazy and wonderful adventure.  I didn’t know you HAD to make a reservation for the Coho Ferry that goes from Victoria to Port Angeles.  I arrived two hours early Saturday morning and it was already full.  Well that fucking sucks Black Ball.  So it was a race to the BC Ferries, across the border, down the I-5.  West at Burlington, over a bridge, along a windy Whidbey Island road, another ferry to Port Townsend, around a bay and on to Sequim.  I arrived at 5PM, just in time for Stacy and Les’ wedding!  What a drive.

Their wedding ended earlier than I thought and there wasn’t much going on… so I went to Seattle.  I drove to Bainbridge Island, took another ferry and got to Seattle at 12:30AM!

I drove around Seattle for a bit then went, ahhhh I’ll just drive home.  Stopped around Mount Vernon and slept; woke up… and back home on the ferry 24 hours after I got on BC Ferries.   Good adventure, good people.

I woke up on Sunday to a couple emails alerting me to new comments on my blog.  Some chick going off on an old blog post about Puscifer.  Weird.  But that’s the internet, people that don’t know you, can discover an old blog post, take it out of context and shit on you.

Maybe I should delete the post?  She’s the second person to send me an angry tirade over a couple sentences.

I do have a great remix for you today.  I have been loving Atlas Genius’ song “Trojans” for awhile now.  Today I got a facebook message from my second best English Mate Rob letting me know about his new monthly mix.   Lots of cool jams.  My attention drifted to a remix from the Aussie band by Lenno.  nice.

The other night, Coral went through her phone sharing with me some of her current favourite songs.  A couple days ago, I did blog a couple of her picks.  But there were so many!  I had to make a mixtape of Coral’s picks.

Here ya go! Mixtape >> There For You

90s Seattle scene stars Soundgarden return with their first album since the Bronze Age.  King Animal is out on November 13th.

Let’s have a listen to the first single.

Soundgarden – “Been Away Too Long”

Not bad… 16 years is a long time between records and sounds like Soundgarden is slipping right back in.

Go with yourself.

European DJ/Producer Tall Sasha sent over this remake of the U2 classic, “With or Without You.”  How do they describe this?  A progressive house banger?  I like it, smooth… Natalie Major is young lovely providing the vocals.

Tall Sasha – “With or Without You” (U2 cover)

I could see an opportunity to drop this on a dance floor, but only the most progressive of weddings.

Getting bogged down.  Brain power is low, energy is low.  So much work and projects that need attention.  It didn’t help that sleep crept up on me last night and I crashed hard.  Had to play catch up this morning.  The one thing I really wanted to do was put together a mix of songs Coral found.  We downloaded a bunch, but I fell asleep before I could craft a podcast.  So… coming soon?

Did roll into the Zone to some fine music.  Mumford & Sons… the band single handily responsible for bringing Depression chic back popped into the BBC 1 for a live performance.   BBC shows always seem to showcase a cover which I love.  Mumford & Sons tackle a jam from the British hipsters Alt J.

Cool song.  I think they’re singing about a movie, but I get a Mexican Standoff vibe.

I got an email the other day from some mucky muck working for Ghostkick. The duo reworked the massive massive from Phoenix, “1901.”  This song has good propulsive energy for your running, workout of dance floor mix.

Another remix that snuck up on me was this beauty by Work Drugs.  He but a nice spin Bon Iver’s “Beth/Rest.”

I’ll be working on a lot of these songs during my set Friday night at Veneto.  Maybe I’ll see you there?

VancityRockGirl just got back from Turks & Caicos and her next adventure is to ITALY! (the food looks pretty awesome).  Huckdoll did the Disneyland thing….which is on Coral and my list of things to get done.  But after reading Huck’s blog, we might wait till Madelyn is a bit older.  Which means… I am pretty close to talking Coral into Hawaii.  She said Hawaii or Mexico might be fine if we can rally some cash.

She hasn’t been to either… I haven’t been to Mexico since 2006 and Hawaii since 1998! The problem we’ll run into is saving money.  We are bad at it.

But I want to go to a coffee plantation and do a beach holiday so bad (or both).

Ah, we’ll see.  Money, debt, time, work.  Blah.  MUSIC! Huzzah!

Today I bring you a couple from Coral’s currents list.

Coral heard this track somewhere (maybe Sirius XMU… which has terrible presentation, but some decent tunes).  The group is called How To Dress Well.  Coral thought this song “&It Was U” might be pretty groovy during the lounge sets at Veneto.

Another jam getting some spins at home that Coral is digging is a song I first heard during Tea Time on The Zone (3PM Monday to Friday with #TeamJollyJon) is Django Django.  This British group slow burns and swirls with some weirdo-pop.

And I Like remixes
(but you already knew that!)

Remix y’all….

Two Door Cinema Club‘s “Sleep Alone” gets all dancey.  The remix is done by French producer Beataucue.  Let’s go!

It sure turned into fall quickly on the Island.  The bravely battle on, but there is a sharpness to the air and a chill.

The march toward winter also mean Bear Week on the Zone, so there is that. And there is this…a little remix of the classic Mamas & Papas jam, “California Dreamin'” by Minnesota.

New Band of Horses

New Band of Horses album Mirage Rock came out yesterday and I rushed out to buy it.  I have always been a fan of the band and Coral I have the previous albums in our collection.

My first listen last night had me a little underwhelmed.  I am hoping with repeat listens some songs will grow on me.  I do love the first song and lead single “Knock Knock” so we can always have that BOH.

The reviews aren’t very good.  Stereogum was a, “its alright.”  Pitchfork was a bit more, “WTF?”  The Wizard?  She loved it!

After I listened to Mirage Rock last night I thought of the song “A Horse With No Name” and I also thought… I wanna listen to  one of the older Band of Horses records.  I don’t think that is good.

I pulled out my older albums, and I like the covers of every BOH record.

Not every song will be a hit… but four quality records with so many gems ain’t bad.

Go with yourself.

As seems to be MuchMusic’s bread-and-butter these days… they are airing another remake of a better British sitcom (because Canadians are soooooooooooo boring) that involves some dorky Brits trying to get laid and drinking…. hang on wait-a-minute…they sound JUST like Canadians.

The show is called The Inbetweeners.  Good times, quality laughs.  I mention the show because I *think* it was last night we heard the song “Sleep Alone” by Two Door Cinema Club during the commercials.  Much still plays the odd video, or part of a video between shows.  I think we heard the song then.  Coral and I both bobbed along and went, “oh right, I like this band.”

So me and Coral are basically grownup teenagers that watch the Inbetweeners (and LA Complex! so good).

What did Jon Williams say, “we made a lot of memories.”  Rifflandia was something special.  Team Zone was in full battle mode with our friends at Wolf/Sheep and Tectoria.(how is that for partners? an art collective and TECHNOLOGY!)  Tindy and Allie worked with Wolf/Sheep to create the world of Zonelandia in the Royal Athletic Park… and I’ll tell ya, I have never seen a radio set up at an event anything like it, ever.  It almost looked like an American theme park… we even had a RIDE! (or you know, a scissor lift).  Thank you to Tindy and Allie for building the whole world of Zonelandia.  The best country on the planet. And thank you to all the volunteers for helping to run Zonelandia and Rifflandia.

Laid a lot of high fives.  Thank you to all the Zoners that made it down.

Thank you Bud and Dave Wallace and the Zone Social team for capturing those high fives on digital film. I like it!

Thank you to Nana for coming to get Maddy on Friday so me and Coral could be dumb and drink too much and have fun.

Thank you Alyx for bringing Coral some money when I left to DJ and Coral discovered she had no debit card. Ruh roh.

Thank you to The Whole Beast for the hot dogs. The BEST hot dogs.

Thank you to Pig for the poutine(s).

Thank you to Prima Strada for the late night night Za when Coral needed it most.

Thank you to the Refiner Diner for making food all weekend! those sliders???? SWA?  Amaze-balls (its a word, look it up!)

Thank you to Lando Rock for sharing the stage with me a couple times and letting me up there to brand the radio.

Thank you to security for letting me back stage without a pass!

Thank you to Boitano for scheduling me and keeping me organized.

Thank you to Kelsey and Nick for drinking with me and Coral.

Thank you Wolf/Sheep for the times and scissor lifting.

Thank you to Kidlandia and the workers there. (the top picture was after Madelyn got creative in their realm)

Thank you Cinevic and Bryan for the popcorn and the beanbag chairs.

Thank you to Caleb for being the Captain of Drinking.

Thank you to Chris Vickers for being a stud.

Thank you Bossman Johnny for the WRISTBANDS! (wouldn’t be able to afford to go without the love).

Thank you Nick, Dimitri and everyone at Atomique for the vision, creativity and work to make Rifflandia.

Victory Barber Shop for the haircut while watching Bright Light Social Hour.

Thank you rock & roll and the bands that play it.

hmmmm…there must be more shout outs, perogy truck!, and…. right its time to get the music.

My MP3 today comes from a Rifflandia discovery.  I loved listening to Jinja Safari on Sunday.  This Aussie band reminded me a whole lot like Vampire Weekend.

I am hoping Nick Blasko from Rifflandia will come on the show tomorrow for a post-Riff review and debrief.  That will be fun.

Thats all I got.  Go with yourself.
