CRC 93 starts off with one of the more interesting indie rockers I’ve heard in awhile.  The artist goes by Eat the Weeds. She has some world beat type stuff going on.  Nanaimo metal band Look Medusa have a terrible band bio write up, but fun straight forward epic style of hard rock.  I almost hear a little Fu Manchu in there?  I hope so, I like the Fu.  My friend Tyson got a job touring with Florida punks Against Me! I interviewed him last week at the start of their cross Canada tour and then launch into Tyson’s band Acres of Lions.  The show ends with a remix of Tegan and Sara done by local Victoria DJ Murge.  Murge taught me at DJ school!  what a guy.

Thank you for downloading Capital Rock City, please tell a friend about your experience.

DJ Notes

01) Eat the Weeds – “Open Loop Design”
02) Look, Medusa! – “The Magic Word”
03) Acres of Lions – “Dance Sequence”
04) Tegan and Sara – “Walking With A Ghost (DJ Murge Remix)”

Man, I hate being the dick, but I had to come down on Hey! Medusa’s band bio.  They’re not the first band I’ve had to call out on the podcast for terribleness… but maybe, just maybe the last?  Anyways, here we go.  Maybe you got some thoughts, maybe you’re a writer and can send the boys some help.

Look, Medusa! is a schizophrenic mixture of sweet metal licks and powerful pop sensibility, packed to the rim with so much emotion that you’ll need a lifetime prescription for Prozac.

It all started as a basement metal band in the Summer of ’06, dedicating half of every band practice to catching the latest episodes of Beverly Hills 90210. Now Look, Medusa! is committed to creating a unique and resonant sound to identify with what each of us has gone through, both collectively and individually. As we’ve grown, so too has our sound. As our minds have evolved, so too have our awesome rock-related superpowers.

Right now, Look, Medusa! is recording for their upcoming album at Victoria’s Infinity Studios with Adam Sutherland. The eclectic mix will delve into every musical taste the band has experienced to date, to prove that they’ve got what it takes to escape the island and make it.

I got a few problems with the bio, but chiefly… who even watches 90210?  They do episodes on the dangers of Sexting?  Shenae Grimes is pretty adorable I guess… if you like that sorta thing, but an inspiration for your brand of metal?

That said, a pretty enjoyable, straight forward metal-type sound.

That’s all I got, talk to you next week. Go with yourself.

OK friends, its been quite sometime since the last installment of 91 Things About 91 Songs! A countdown of the The Zone’s Top 91 of the Decade.

If you can remember back to January 27th… I covered 59-50 and left off at Our Lady Peace’s “Innocent.”  Today I’ll tackle 49-40.

***

49) Brand New – “Sic Transit Gloria (Glory Fades)”

Sic Transit Gloria Mundi is a Latin phrase that translates to: “Thus passes the glory the glory of the world.”

Brand New heard the phrase  when they watched the film Rushmore.  Damn, that was a good film.

If I were a bigger music nerd collector, I’d want to track down the 7″ single.  Pressed on pink vinyl and backed with “Jaws Theme Swimming” which is a mighty track.

48) Radiohead – “There, There”

I don’t know what happened… Coral and I have every Radiohead record, a vinyl box set… MP3s… everything.  So I thought.  Then I wanted to play some Hail to the Thief at the Veneto Lounge a bunch of weeks ago and it was no where to be found.  I tore the bedroom apart trying to find the CD and it was the ONE missing!  This will not stand.

I cleaned the bedroom (and I am happy to report that as of last night, a months long project came to fruition and my bedroom is now an organized and clean sanctuary) and I bought Hail to the Thief.

As the great thief once said, “Mission Accomplished.”

47) Foo Fighters – “Times Like These”

Speaking of the the great Thief… in 2004 he rocked this song as his campaign theme.  Dave Grohl didn’t quite get that. so he helped John Kerry’s campaign.  Oh I hope John kicked George’s ass! I hope….

46) Creed – “My Sacrifice”

Creed?  On the Zone?  Well there was a time.

This song was a monster hit in 2001…. and you probably  could have guessed that it was used in WWE Wrestling.  Hey remember that song, “My own Prison?”  I used to LOVE that song.

Don’t read the comment section for the song “My Own Prison.” It’ll make you want to barf Amurika’s bathroom.

45) Nine inch Nails – “Discipline”

Trent’s first single as an independent.  Less than 24 hours after it was mastered, Reznor hit “send” on the email and it was on the radio.  Go technology!

44) Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker – “Hollow Point Snyper Hyperbole”

I want my business card to say “Hyperbolist.”  I think that explains what a radio presenter does most the day.  hyperbole, good word USS.

Hyperbole (pronounced /haɪˈpɜrbəli/[1], from ancient Greek ὑπερβολή ‘exaggeration’) is a rhetorical device in which statements are exaggerated. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally.

43) Metric – “Gimme Sympathy”

“Who’d you rather be?  The Beatles or the Rolling Stones?” and with that query, so many great cocktail party discussion were born.  Thank you Emily Hains.

The song also references the Beatles when Emily coos, “Come on baby play me a song, like here comes the sun.”

And the title of course… a play on two different Rolling Stones songs.  neat.

42) System of a Down – “Toxicity”

OK, permit me to quote Simon on American Idol, “I don’t get it.”

I mean that about System.  Kinda boring at times… and that is when I can handle them, the rest of the time they aggravate me.

AND they are always fighting and breaking up and getting back together and doing solo projects and fighting injustice and then getting back together, no wait they’re not, are they?  did they tweet something lately?

like I said, I don’t get it. Kids request these guys all the time.  I am happy they don’t have anything new out because people lose their minds and I can’t play SOAD enough in a show. No denying, they are a popular modern rock band and need to be on this list.

41) Metric – “Help, I’m Alive”

Metric’s Fantasies is a great record and monster on the Zone.  The first single was this cut.  Its good.  I really like the acoustic version as well which was a free download if you signed up for Metric’s email list.

40) City and Colour – “Sleeping Sickness”

I’d call this song Dallas Green’s biggest radio song.  It was heavily requested when it was new and continues to generate some interest to this day.

The song features the legendary Gord Downy on vocals.

“Sleeping Sickness” is from the album Show Me Your Love.  I kinda like this alternate cover.

Simple, but kinda cool right?

That’s all I got for you today.  next time we’ll count down songs 39-30.

Go with yourself.

Red Barn

Last week was a bit of a fail with the sandwich project.  I ran outta sandwich stuff on Friday so went to Wendy’s.  My burger meal cost close to $8!

Today, Corj, Madelyn Oh Yeah! and I braved the rain to drive north to the Red Barn market.  And I am happy to report that this week I’ll be able to make some epic sandwiches and my total bill was around $20.75.  I will likely need to buy a couple days of lunch meat near the end and maybe even another loaf of bread…. so we’ll see how that plays out.

This week it’ll be roasted chicken sandwich with Maple Cheese on a Bond’s Bakery Honey Grain bread.  Sprouts, cucumbers, lettuce, avocado and tomato.  Yum yum.

Holy (bad word), allergies are kicking my ass.  I have been rocking Claritin pills lately and they just barely mask the allergy sickness.  They make it so I can just function enough to get to work and talk on the radio or stand in a lounge all night to play music.  But they make me feel like total shit.  its like that bad trip you took in high school where you said, “I am never doing drugs again!” but then you do drugs again.  ugh, every day, I go through bad highschool kid tweeker trip.

Hey, if you haven’t seen the music video for the new Gorillaz song, “Stylo,” its pretty fun.  Gorillaz won’t let me embed the video on the this here blog cuz they really want your nickle for watching Youtube ads, so click THIS LINK if you want to watch it.

I have finally started organizing my music into playlists and folders again.  Man, changing computer is a lot of work.  Its going to take some time to get my music sets back up to the quality they were before… now that said, last week when I was thrust into this new beast because the Toshiba died… I was really spinning trying to get something to play at the Veneto Lounge… but then after my shift, the manager guy Josh came up to me and said it was one of my better sets… so that was nice.

I brought my rig to the Clubhouse last night which is something I don’t normally do, but I really enjoyed my four hours there much more (or way more… I don’t how that sentence could work better).  I think I’ll go though that trouble more often.

OK, now I am just rambling… talk to you later.

Go with yourself.

Just so wicked and weird.  A song I’ll be needing to track down for my Veneto Lounge sets for sure.  The artist is Gonjasufi and the song is “DedNd.”

Can’t wait to check out the record next week.

Some changes to the program today on The Zone Afternoon Show.

At 6PM, Alexisonfire will stop by for a live performance on the radio.

6:30PM will feature Zoner’s interview with Billy Talent.

So that means no #1s at 5 o’clock and no Picks at 6 at… 6 o’clock.

Billy Talent on Myspace
Alexisonfire on MySpace
Against me on MySpace
Cancer Bats on MySpace

Now you know… and knowing is half the battle.

Class of 84’s new song is called “Old Bones, New Blood” and this bratty punk tracks is about getting old and loving to skate!

CO84’s Jono McGee helped produce Start With A Cobra and these firecrackers are also singing about skating, I think.

We have a new band of the month at the Zone, they are called The Perfect Trend.  This Nanaimo screamo-type band will play Evolution on March 25th!

The show ends with former ZBOTM Maurice.  They played live on The ZAS last week and I included the performance on this here podcast.

Thank you for downloading Capital Rock City, if you like the show, please tell a friend.

DJ Notes

01) Class of 84 – “Old Bones, New Blood”
02) Start With The Cobra – “Hot Rails”
03) The Perfect Trend – “Aaryn”
04) Maurice – “Kerosene (LIVE)”

Class of 84’s new record cover.  Looks pretty good eh?

Jono from the band is also involved with Start With The Cobra.  He sent me a link to Phillips Beer here in Victoria.  Inside select 12 packs of yummy beer, you’ll find a download code to get a bunch of Start With The Cobra songs.  Fun.

The new Zone Band of the Month is The Perfect Trend.  The Nanaimo band is working hard trying to elevate their game to rock star status.  So far they have opened for a ton of bands, traveled and toured everywhere.  Planning a trip to Toronto for Canadian Music Week and hanging out with Adam Sutherland recording a new record.  We’ll get a chance to see them March 25th at Evolution.

The show ends with a liver performance form Maurice.  Mike Devlin wrote a good article about their trials, challenges and successes.

Maurice is off on a cross-Canada tour with the Armchair Cynics.  Awesomesauce.

Next week on CRC 93, talking about Tyson Yerex and his move to Against Me for their Canadian Tour, Jeff Kalesnikoff is playing with Theset and we’ll check out a new band called Look Medusa!

That’s all I got, go with yourself.

Mic Check

My man James from LoadingReadyRun came over today to help me with the new Mac and to resurrect the Toshiba.  Success n both fronts… and we got to talking about podcasting.  I’ve been podcasting for many years now, and being a radio mucky muck, I have access to a professional audio studio, a tech guy, music, and production libraries.  Good times.  BUT I find it has left me a little ignorant on the hows and the whys and the whats.  I can make a podcast, but I feel that without this support from the radio station, I could never crank one out myself.

Now, oddly enough, I feel like I am learning about the nuts and bolts of podcasting again from scratch.  James and his team at LLR jam out a weekly podcast just like Capital Rock City.  Their podcast is a 40 minute yak fest where a bunch of dudes sit around and riff on video games.  I wanted to know how they do it.  James basically explained they use a USB mic called the Samson C03U.  They record into GarageBand which is an audio editor software that comes with the MacBook.  I have been poking around Garageband and find it weird, seeing as I have used Cool Edit pro for a hundred years and Pro-Tools sometimes.  What I like about Garageband is that it seems built for podcasting and will let me do a bunch of stuff that I see on other podcasts that I have wondered about.  Like inserting pictures and having them change during the broadcast.  neat.  It’ll take sometime to figure it out and I’ll need a mic (think I’ll see about a Samson), but you might be hearing some early demo podcasts on here pretty soon.

Another inspiring thing that should help get some new show ideas out there is streaming the shows on this here blog.  Amanda over at the Indie Files was very helpful in explaining how to rock an audio player on the blog. Check out an MP3 post she made that features the songs she is talking about.

Your likely thinking, “holy fuck Jeremy, that is some blogging 101 stuff there.”  But not for me, I’ve seen that on so many blogs and always wanted to do that on my blog when i’m yapping about music, or quickly jam out a little podcast to play some audio for you… and now finally I think I can.

You’ll likely be hearing and seeing some practise over the next couple weeks as I flirt with Garageband, WordPress, Serato and this Mac, creating podcasts and publishing the content.

Thank you James for your computer knowledge and help and to Amanda for the email.

Oh and the Toshiba lives. Nice.

Go with yourself.

stolen without a gun from Auntie Andra's facebook

Ahhh  GOLD!  Right, it happened yesterday afternoon.  The Team Canada Boys rocked the gold medal and capped a great couple weeks in British Columbia.

I am so happy they triumphed in the nail biter against our arch nemesis country, the USA in a thrilling overtime win.  If they had lost, it would have put a bit of a spoiler on the whole 14 Gold medal record and a Canada best 26 medals at Winter Olympics.

I get it, gold in like ice dance and I dunno, other sports… but for me, the hockey is the only one that really mattered.  Its going to be kinda hard to go back to NHL hockey on Tuesday (Nucks vs. Rick Nash and Blue Jackets).

I am happy for my friend Tyson.  He got a job playing keyboards for Florida punkers Against Me!.

We all know and love the T Razer from his days playing bass in former Zone bands of the month Moneyshot and keys/guitar for Acres of Lions.

The T Razer's Facebook Profile Picture

Against Me will be in Victoria on Wednesday playing a Zone Show with Billy Talent, Alexisonfire and Cancer Bats at the Arena.

Razer will get to travel across the country with the Florida band playing arena show for the next month or so (I can’t remember how long the tour is).  While Tyson is on the road with Against me, Acres of Lions lead guy, Jeff will be playing with another Victoria band, Theset.  Theset were added to the SnoCore tour, criss-crossing the Great White North and in Victoria on April 4th.

Wasn’t able to go grocery chopping last night, so I didn’t pack a lunch today!  I’ll have to plan that put tonight and go later this evening for the Sandwich Project.  I’ll post an update on that front later when it happens.

Go with yourself.

Man, look at that robot trying to laser gun those wild horses.  That just isn’t right at all.  at all.

Even that rainbow doesn’t lighten mood.  Not one bit.

This record cover that tells the tale of woe for these poor horses is from the Toronto electronic band Woodhands. What they have against the horses (or maybe for laser shooting robots) I don’t know, but I downloaded some songs they other day and they sound alright.

I downloaded a song called “Dissasembler.”

My computer world is a little rattled right now.  Coral and I went out to buy a new Macbook on Friday because the Toshiba is right screwed up and it died just before my DJ set.

I got the Macbook mostly ready for my DJ sets, need to still organize my playlists and the like.  And its a bit of a learning curve and awkward for me.  I have always been on a Microsoft PC so I’ll need to practice I guess.  And our internet at home has been weird.  The Mac doesn’t seem to be jiving on our WIFI.  When I get the Toshiba reformatted, I’ll be able to see if its a router or Mac thing.

One thing I am excited to do, is make podcasts from home!  The Mac comes with Garageband which is a program that allows me to record and edit audio.  fun.  I’ll just need a mic for home as the stock one in the Macbook sounds like suck.

OK good talk, Go with yourself.
