REM_New-Adventures-600x600

friend-of-the-show Nicole sent me over this editorial form AV Club. They’re doing 1996 week on that website and they had a story about how 1996 was the year alternative music died.

A lot of good points sure. Did I buy that Seven Mary Three record? You can bet your ripped jeans and No Fear shirt I did!

The article is slagging on the songs and times of 96 in alt rock but that was also when i was 16 and soaking up a ton of mainstream rock from 99.3 CFOX in Vancouver. I can’t hate all those song. They mentioned REM’s New Adventures in Hi-Fi…I remember when it came out, I remember LOVING all things REM back then and I had that album.  Sounds ;like I was one of the few who bought it!

Being 16 in 1996 and working at a Subway, I listened to a ton of radio. I’d get into the singles and back then, you’d have to buy the album. Since I also had a job, I could afford a weekly or bi-weekly trip to the Music World in the Lougheed Mall and I bought all the stuff I liked based off a song or two. This album was one of those picks. And I’d wear it out in my SONY discman laying in bed.

“E-Bow The Letter” was the jam and thank you to AV Club (and Nicole!) for putting it back in my head 20 years later.

aquilo

Aquilo is the super chill duo from the super chill village of Silverdale, which looks to my ignorant eyes…as a town in a park in England? Must be nice.

I’ve blogged about these bros before, I like their soft sounds.

New song is called “You’re Like Me.”

Today is a perfect one in Vancouver. I went to Storm Crow Alehouse on Broadway to tape an episode of their podcast. My walk into the city after was glorious.

I’ll let you know when the podcast goes live and maybe you’ll throw it a listen for me? We yap some Dungeons and Dragons, Stranger Things, James Corden, Pokemon, beer.

Japandroids

JAPANDROIDS ride again! In their first facebook post since 2013, the band announced a tour that begins with a four-night stand at The Cobalt in Vancouver in October.

JAPANDROIDS’ legend continues to simmer. The great(est) Vancouver rock & rollers were the darlings of guitar forward indie rock in the early 2010s….then after a triumphant World Tour in 2012-2013…. disappeared into the ether for a while. I continued to stay crazy as I will, forever.

There were some whispers that the band was working on new music…I tried to get the news out of their label Polyvinyl last year, but they said “no dice. stay tuned!”

Then friend-of-the-show Taylor sent me the news…the band is back!

Four shows at the Cobalt begin Wednesday, October 5th…. tickets on sale now.

Then shows in LA, Toronto, London, Brooklyn and Mexico City…sounds like more of a whirlwind working holiday!

And searching for a JAPANDROIDS song to post, I found this weird Teen Daze cover of “Wet Hair.” Alright then.

a real hero

I love when you’re watching TV a clip of a song comes on and you’re like, “I know this!”

During the CBC’s Rio 2016 Olympic coverage, they air this Chrysler Pacifica commercial starring comedian Jim Gaffigan. It’s funny enough, but the song….I know that song!

The song is from French producer, David Grellier and his project College. The song is from his 2011 ep A Real Hero.

It’s a song I used to play all the time during my time at Veneto Lounge and honestly let slip out of my brain, but because of Chrysler…it’s back!

The song was moderately popular when it was used on the soundtrack to the movie Drive and later Taken 2.

Now it is back in my brain.

hiking

My schedule can be a little hectic, especially in summer with work and then DJ gigs…but this weekend, I finally found some time to take my daughter camping!

I could talk about a bunch of things right now, but as always, I don’t have the time or energy to put my thoughts down, just know that it felt good to get out to Mystic Beach with my daughter for some dirtbag gourmet food and sleeping on the beach.

It even rained a little on us for our hike out on Sunday.

On the drive out to Mystic, our record of choice was was Alvvays most excellent 2014 self-titled album.

Nashville’s JEFF The Brotherhood‘s new record, Zone, is out on August 12th.

Big, fuzzy, hazy guitar rock riffage over dry humorous lyrics.

They released a third share song off the upcoming record today called “Roachin.” The song features another Tennessee singer, Bully’s Alicia Bognan. Remember, I recently got into them after seeing the rockers at Pemberton.

And you know what, the previous share songs are rad, so let’s revisit “Idiot” and “Punishment.”

Back on the Island today…. wedding at Sea Cider, then a little hike/over night camp with  my daughter, then back to Vancouver Sunday for a DJ gig supporting Daniel Wesley performing a FREE patio set at Personas at the Grand Villa Casino.

Philly punks, Beach Slang, have a new song out today called “Punks in a Disco Bar.”

The song comes with the news that Beach Slang‘s next record, A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings, is out on September 22nd.

Lead Beach Slanger, James Alex says of the new songs, “They’re autobiographical, too, but kind of at a remove-I’m not that young kid anymore, but I used to be.  You know how it is;rock and roll is a new crop of 15-year-olds picking up guitars every year and having at it.  There was something really cool about documenting someone elses life, but seeing myself in it.  I suppose that’s why we connect.  We’re all kind of one big gang.”

This song is going into iPod heavy rotation.

the bourgeois

One more, before I pop the blog for the long weekend. The Bourgeois are from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I saw the song title for their song “Summer of George” and had to hit play.

Love the dark, moody, heavy guitar driven track. Some fine hard modern rock that leans on grunge. Reminds me of the kind of music I grew up with which makes sense as the music was produced and mixed by guys that have worked with The Smashing Pumpkins and Placebo.

Here’s a quick little bio form their press:

Zach Mobley and Ty Clark grew up in the bowels of rural Oklahoma and dealt with the oppression of the Bible-Belt in different ways.  Zach (guitar/vocals) spent most of his adolescence holed up listening to punk rock and plotting his escape.  Ty (drums) also took solace in music but fell victim to the opioid epidemic that plagued his community.

After a stint in one of the state’s many overcrowded and underfunded prisons, Ty reclaimed control of his life and responded to an ad placed by Zach.  The two quickly realized they shared similar tastes in music and a similar distaste for the hypocrisy surrounding them.  Another small town pariah, Vance Young (bass), was added later to complete the lineup.

The band says this about the song, “a dark look at how the hope and optimism that accompany summer can quickly be replaced by laziness and apathy.”

Koni

New jam from Major Lazer features Justin Bieber so you know it’s gunna be red hot. My soundcloud feed is already overrun with remixes but the guy who consistently stands out is German producer Koni. He traditionally re-cuts the song with different vocals and puts it back together a bright cloud house song.

There was a story the other day in Vancouver of some quirky fellow who did an engagement shoot with a cardboard cut out his fiance who is currently in Taiwan.

His name is Ryan and her name is Phoebe.

When I searched Ryan Phoebe into google I stumbled upon a pop star named Phoebe Ryan and found myself falling down the rabbit whole reading this story in Vanity Fair.

I thought, huh, she sounds neat. Clicked to wikipedia and saw she did a song with Skizzy Mars!

And here’s Skizzy showing up on a Phoebe Ryan song that has been remixed and listened to a whole bunch of times.

She has a newish sugar pop song called “Dollar Bills.” I like Las Vegas too Phoebe.

Alma is a Finnish singer I stumbled on last week. I’ve really been enjoying her song “Karma.”

One more from my Minnesota blogger best friend Ruth…some happy house music.

Artist is Chris Malinchak from New York City.

Happy Friday! It’s a Long Weekend here in British Columbia so I’ll try to yap at you next week.

babaali

My second-best-English-mate Rob is living in New York City these days, and he sent me over an artist he’s hyping named Baba Ali. He’ll be touring with Gold Panda and rolling through town on August 18th for a show at Fortune Sound Club.  Check out the song “Not Loving You.”

***

The next song that popped up on my soundcloud after Baba Ali was an artist named Neda. When I was listening my boss Ronnie walked in and said, “CHVRCHES?”  I think that is a good thing.

She is from Carnarvon, WA…the town has a population less than 5,000 and is 900 kms north of Perth. Sounds lovely.
