Its just a trailer, but I love how this documentary is shot.

I love the colours of the graphics, I love how they tie into all the graphics and colours of the band.  I love the sounds, I love the images.  Its just a trailer and I watch it over and over.  I would have bought the video right now if it was on iTunes but thankfully ( I am so broke and should leave my credit card in the wallet) it was not!

“One day I’ll get money, I’ll get funny again.”

The first 15 seconds or so of The National’s “All The Wine” sounds like the score music of Friday Night Lights.  Being an old and busted Dad type guy means I spend a lot of Friday nights at home and lately I am all about that show.  The musical score makes the hour pretty special.

Turns out a lot of the score is from the group Explosions in the Sky which oddly, has become a recent fave of mine… no wonder I was picking up on the musical score of the show.

Neat.  They refer to their music as “cathartic mini-symphonies.”  Cathartic, good word.

I know Huckdoll is a big fan of Friday Night Lights… but I don’t think its for the music.

OK, I broke down a resetted the old computer.  I really do need to learn to toggle the french characters off.  I tried searching on google but didn’t find very much that was helpful.

Since we’re jibber jabbering (or I’m going on about lists) lets have a look at the first ever Jeremy’s Top Bands.

I signed up for Last FM last week so now I have my own personal chart of fave bands on my media player at home for the week.

01) The National
02) Propagandhi
03) The Killers
04) Bruce Springsteen
05) The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

and my write in vote is The Boxer Rebellion which I’ve been jamming out at work in the studio but I don’t have a Last FM scrobber thingy there.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day.  Coral says she doesn’t celebrate the day, but I do… so we do. Ha.  I am hosting an event at Element tomorrow if you’re looking to party on a Saturday night.  Bring your special someone or come with friends.  We have all sorts of fun shenanigans planned!

Before the big day, I think we’ll cook up a scrumptious dinner.  I saw David Fey and Rod (My aunt Melanie’s brother) on A Morning today cooking up something I’d like to attempt.  But try finding a website with the details and you’ll be disappointed.

Should you be fortunate enough to get laid on Valentine’s Day… Kid Carson posted this neat-O! link on his twitter.

Devine Pleasure Poses?  Yes please.

OK, I better get in the shower… its almost 11!  I got a ton of work to do today.

not enough money
to buy a PC
so i come in this weekend

and if i forget you
ill have nobody left to forget
i guess thats what assholes get

traded my day light
for a career

but i need you to disprove
my theory of the crows

pouring my fingers across the keys
will someone review my salary please?
im selling my time to the man who sells style
that time should be mine to waste on you

ill suck off investors
ill suck off VCs

im losing my posture from time on my knees
they treat me so well
cause i’ll do anything
its in my nature of service

I am jamming out The National which always makes me happy. “Theory of the Crows” came up and I went, “hmm.”  Timely track.

Last night I guested at Lucky Bar for WTF!  Lots of fun to DJ in a club that was A) full and B) the people were really into dancing to ANYTHING.  It was cool.

There were three of us tagging in at the controls, Liam Lux, DJ Fatso and myself.  I felt really old.

I plugged in my laptop and was using iTunes to DJ (lame I know).  I was telling Fatso how much I’d love to get a proper rig one day (I’ve been talking about FOREVER) .  Fatso said, what, you can’t drop $1,000 on Serato?

I said, “I’d love to, but my DJ money goes to the kid or bills or diapers or food.”

he looks at me oddly, “how old are you?”

“29.”

“Wow!  you are one young looking 29 year old.”

He was cool, he apologized and said, “yeah I’m 22 and my DJ money is weed money so….”  Then the dude turned me onto this program called Ableton.  He said you can buy it at Long and McQuade or… um, download it off the internets.

Fatso was a good man and showed me what it can do.  Requires no controller which was rad.  He had a little channel mixer thing that he wasn’t even using but said costs like $80 is I wanted to go there and have a controller of some kind.  Fatso was a real wizard with Ableton, so I think if I can get my hands on the program I might be able to elevate my game from “dude that pushes play on CDJs” or “Music Nerd that makes fantastical playlists on iTunes.”

It was sorta neat at Lucky, I saw a bunch of old regulars from my days playing at Hugo’s.  It was odd, never thought I’d miss the weekday party kids… till they were gone.  I wondered what became of them after Hugo’s closed.  I’d hoped some would come to the Clubhouse for my new Tuesday but they are all at Lucky on Wednesday now I guess.

Coral and I are pretty excited to learn that Jimmy Eat World will be reissuing their brilliant record Clairty on vinyl.

I was never a big Jimmy Eat World fan before I met Coral.  I had always thought they were a pop band that we played on the radio.  Never really dived too deep into the lore.  I met Coral and that all changed.  She told me how amazing they were.  I thought she was amazing, ergo JEW=Amazing.

Coral’s favourtie record is Clarity.  One of those discs that is just so good but never meant for mainstream accolades.  A record, that when enjoyed in the right context will change your entire perspective.  Beautiful, challenging and hmmm… I want to say gliding?  but I don’t think that is a word.

Coral and I like to collect our favourite records on vinyl.  Not so much cuz we are overly snobby about our tunes (the record player is in Madelyn’s closet) but because we like displaying the album artwork on the wall (and I like to have the albums).

Clarity has always been high on our list of acquisitions but the dude at Ditch Records says it is a real collector and a challenge to track down.  Until now.  10th year anniversary reissue!  huzzah!

Now I don’t have the money to take Coral to San Diego or San Francisco for a 10th Anniversary show, but I can probably scrounge $30 for the LP.

She get an IOU on Valentines day… coming in the mail… your Clarity record.

That’s all I got.

Neat.

Coral got me some records for Christmas and my brother got me the new Kings of Leon so it was time to add another row to the wall of records.  I saw those two British Guys that design interiors and the one always wears outrageous flowers on his shoulder…  Colin and Justin?  Those guys were on the Ceeb last night (I was watching the show Toronto about living in Toronto for some reason, I have no desire to live there… but I think its neat watching local TV shows for places where I don’t live) and they were talking about the need to change living spaces every season like you would your hair, or clothes… or at least change every 4 or 5 years like you might your car.  Now I don’t have the cash to redecorate the home but I can add another row of records.  Coral and I are also planning on moving the TV off the fire place mantle to a little stand and then digging the record player out and putting that up on the mantle with the MP3 player.  Nice, tangent.

Coral bought me the Cut//Copy single for “Hearts on Fire” and Fleet Foxes record.  She liked the look of the Cut//Copy single better than the album and I agree.  I asked for Fleet Foxes not because I LOVE them (they are good and growing on me.  Coral actually got me to take a second listen… “White Winter Hymnal” came up on a playlist I made over Christmas and every time she went, “What is that?”), I asked for Fleet Foxes because the record has a Medieval village scene on the cover which I thought looked pretty rad.  Musicians into history are musicians that I am into.

My brother bought Kings of Leon’s new record for me because he hears me yapping about on the Zone all the time.  Then I bought the Mission of Burma record because “That’s When I Reach for My Revolver” is one of my all time favourite songs.

I fired up my Mission of Burma DVD last night and got out the level and measuring tape to square it all off.  I commented to Coral that this record represents maybe the 4th time that I have purchased the song “That’s When I reach…”  I discovered the song when I bought a compilation of 80’s alternative music.  Fell.in.love with MOB.  Had to own the actual album (on CD) Signals, Calls and Marches.  Then I was hooked.  They happened to be signed to Matador Records at the time and had put out a new record, The Obliterati.  So I bought that and a Matador compilation that had a MOB song I didn’t have.  This lead to me needing to buy their old full length LP, Vs.  When I bought Vs. I saw that it was an extended bonus thingamajig that is all the rage these days, and Signals had the same treatment… so I bought Signals again!

Now I have Signals on vinyl hanging on my wall.

I am a fan.

Every band hanging on my wall I am generally a fan of.  I own all the LPs I have on CD and/or MP3.  In the case of the National… I have their albums and I go out of my way to see them live.  The first time they came to Vancouver was to open for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.  CYHSY was all the rage at the time, a real hipster group and I was temped to go to Vancouver to see them then… I would have had my first encounter with what would go on to become one of my favourite groups.  But I did not… and The National would go undiscovered by me for at least another year.  Then one day Tyson came over ot my place when I lived in Fernwood.  back then, Tyson had a subscription to eMusic, and the beauty of that service is that Razer can log on anywhere and access his music and “share” it with friends.  He added a ton of music that night including “All the Wine” by The National.  That one song, randomly added to my computer by Tyson on an evening of pints hooked me.  I became a fan.  A champion of the National.  Boxer came out soon after (or maybe around the time I was exposed to “All The Wine” and I bought it and it was one of those life changing records.  The National came to Vancouver to play at Richards last summer when Coral was pregnant and Razer, Cherylann, Coral and I all took the boat over for the show.  It was one of the better rock show I have seen live (and I’ve been to far more than the average music lover).  Coral and I put the record up on the wall.  The next Spring, The National got the nod to open for REM.  Luckily I love REM… Grandma Mom and Grandpa Jack watching Madelyn and Coral and I spread out on a blanket at Deer Lake, drank some Strongbows and enjoyed the sounds and park while listening to The National.

I am a fan.

and as long as The National or Mission of Burma or (insert your favourite band HERE!) has fans that will pay whatever price and travel to see them.  Buy their record first and buy the same record in multiple formats, they will never go hungry.

Some bands connect with their audience in that profound and important way and some do not… or do they?

Here is a piece of an article I read in the 2008 Year in Review with Monday Magazine.

Still waiting

In our May 1 issue, we ran an article about local musician Anne Schaefer’s latest project, a concept album called The Waiting Room. She’d secured a Canada Council grant to record the disc and was holding a big concert, to be recorded and broadcast on CBC Radio Two, as a way to raise enough funds to get the album finished.

While the concert went well and made it to broadcast (hear it online at cbc.ca/radio2/cod/concerts/20080503annes), it didn’t raise as much money as Schaefer would have hoped; the album has been recorded, but it hasn’t been mixed, mastered or manufactured yet. With the release of a follow-up to her critically acclaimed Twelve Easy Pieces temporarily shelved, Schaefer has been forced to take a job—her first in 15 years, as previously she’s been able to make a living as a self-employed musician.

“One of the things I’m trying to do as the director of Larsen’s School of Music is create classes and workshops and interesting projects so that I can offer employment to as many of the talented musicians in this town as possible,” she says of her current job. “Most of them are struggling to make a living as well and have not been accessible to the greater community if they’re not teaching privately, which is a real shame.”
Is this article a celebration of Anne’s career or damnation of the “system” that will not embrace her music?

To me this article is a celebration, so then I don’t understand what they’re saying.  Anne has been able to NOT work in a traditional power structure for 15 years!  For more than half my life, Anne has done what most of you reading this blog and what most of the people reading Monday Mag dream of… freedom.  After her 15 year run as a professional musician Anne was FORCED to take a job, and what job did she take?  DIRECTOR of Larsen’s School of Music.  The boss.  BECAUSE she worked for 15 years as a musician she  is rewarded with a job that allows her to continue to play music, learn and share.  This is a job that I can not do because I have not grinded away for 15 years as a professional musician.

I am some what led to believe that Anne might not be an overly successful musician in the sense that after her 15 year run, she could not find the capital required to mix her record.  She received a grant.  That is nice.  Her budget and vision was more extravagant than the grant so she picked up her socks and put on a concert.  She asked her fans to come to the show and support her art.  They did not meet expectation and she continues to wait to put out the record.

What went wrong?

Hard for me to say, as I don’t know Anne, and I don’t know the whole story… just what I read in Monday Mag and what kind of tone or moral the magazine was trying to instill.

I believe that Anne’s problem is that she was unable to motivate 1,000 true fans in her 15 year odyssey of music.  Anne doesn’t need more government funding, or more grants, or more Monday Mag articles wagging their fingers at society, or 15 more CBC channels.  Anne needs some real fans that will buy whatever she records, every time.  She needs a me.

The best singer songwriter you’ve never heard of.

He shoots, he scores.

Goals.

But unless you’re Sami Salo, it does not usually go in that easy.

He shoots, and misses the net.
He shoots, and someone dives in front to block his shot.
He shoots, and hits the post! (so close)
He shoots, and with team mates in front screening the goal, it gets deflected by a winger and he settles for an assist and job well done.

I don’t think there was really a point to that, I was just thinking about it last night driving home from the Clubhouse at 2:30 AM.  It was cold out.  There was frost on the ground.  I like my drive homes in the early morning after a night of DJing.

We were talking bands last at the Clubhouse.  It was pretty slow after the Zone’s Movember fundraiser ended and I stayed till 2AM spinning some rock to the few bar flies remaining.  We sat around and shot the shit about fave bands.  There was a bizarrely heated debate on what is the best Coldplay album?  Swa?… we talked about Kings of Leon.  We talked LOTS and LOTS about KOL.  I forget just how insanely popular these guys are.  People who love them, LOVE them.  Apparently, I was the one guy that did not go to Seattle to see them at the Paramount last month.  So it was generally decided that I was less a fan.  then I blew some minds by getting all scene, “well, i didn’t go because I saw them LAST year in Seattle.”  Collective mind destruction and then someone asked the impossible question, “what is your favourite band?”

I listed off dozens… you know how it is, it depends.

But one of my favourites is The National.

I started this blog by yapping about goals.  And I have a few and this year I am trying to move forward on them.  I think that i want to get a University degree.  Someone in our little family should have one.  University degree’d people generally make more money and I think it would be a good opportunity to set a positive example for Madelyn.  Coral is very fortunate because she works for the government.  If she can find a way to make her interests in education apply to her role serving the public, then the government helps pay for school.  For me, well, Royal Roads is expensive and the reality is that it might be out of reach right now.  So I am starting to hunt around for options.  Another idea is to finish my certificate in Public Relations.  And then part of me wonders?  Could I invent my own degree?

Why take any of these McDonald-esque “programs” and maybe I can just pick a bunch of things that interest me.  I’ll get a degree in Jeremy Studies.

On my resume I can write “University of Victoria” and “courses include:”

I’ve already jammed out some Public relations and some PR research.  I could add…. hmmm Exploring Creative non-Fiction, Improv Comedy, The Medieval Mediterranean, maybe 8 or 9 more PR classes ot finish the certificate,  maybe some internerding, and I guess we’ll end with a travel abroad study, Coral has always wanted to go to New York.  I’ll also need tt learn some animation.  I want to make cartoons about forest animals with a stellar soundtrack.

I’ll have a ceremony, print off a certificate and refer to myself as a doctor of me.

Then… I’ll become a teacher in Jeremy Studies for future generations.
