Bear Hands is a band we know and love here in The Zone because of the song “Giants.” The follow up single is a cut called “Agora” and yesterday a remix from Com Truise was posted. Let’s hit it!

Bear Hands will be on Conan on October 27th!

Penguin Prison is the worst name for a group. Penguins should be in nature, not in jail. I Heart Moosiq posted this beauty jam.

Finally…I like this chill Ryan Hemsworth song, “Snow in Newark.”

Fact Mag says these things about the song.

That’s all I got…. oh wait… Saddle Creek is re-issuing Cursive’s The Ugly Organ… pre-order YUP!

Thank you JR at Ditch Records for the head’s up…he really is the best record store guy on the planet.

I had Ugly Organ in the compact disc player during the time around the birth of my son Jack.

That part that says “The worst is over..” over and over and over. It resonated with me after his birth and both baby and Mom were alive and healthy. It’s one of those Dad things… when it is game time….it is just Mom and babe and there isn’t much you can do but strap in, trust in the medical science, and hope. After it is done and everyone is safe and healthy, you think…OK, this is gunna be alright.

I do l know of course…wait, this is just the beginning! But for the moment, it’s all good.

Aaaaaaand. New Foo Fighters today. This will be a big deal at the radio factory.

Now…that is all I got. Time to hit Part and Parcel for lunch!

baby
My wife tracked down her old Motorola Razr flip phone the other day. We plugged it in and came across a bunch of old pictures. She found this beauty… the day she told me she was pregnant with our daughter Madelyn.

I picked her up on Yates Street in front of our first apartment together. She was emotional, told me she was pregnant. I said, “do you wanna keep it?” She said, “yes.” I said, “cool. We’d better hurry up…don’t want to be late for Monster Trucks.” And off we went to host a suite of radio contest winners in a suite at the arena.

Now we’re totally married with kids!

OK, enough with the “dear diary” … let’s get to it.

A song that screamed up the Hype Machine charts. The mysterious (being mysterious is so hot right now) Eastside. This BLOG says we don’t know anything about her (they do have a picture of a woman’s back…maybe Eastside’s?). But we do know she sounds amazing and her cover-mash of Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t” crossed with Chris Brown’s “Loyal” is novel.

This song has been on repeat.

***

Jaymes Young is another British duder… Earbuddy says this song is so much more than a devastating love song…there is a depth or darkness that might lurk behind the simple promise to be “a better man.”

***

One of the women I do boxing training with is named Debbie Stirling. She was tellling me that she is currently obsessed with Clean Bandit. Then the other day I was trolling the “Most Shazamed in Victoria” chart… and somewhere around #4… Clean Bandit. And now today… #4 on Hype Machine, Clean Bandit. Something is up…let’s hit play on the new song “Real Love.”

and then revisit their MONSTER jam “Rather Be.”

Happy Friday!

Sea Fret 1
Here is a pretty but ultimately sad song from a duo originally from the small British town of Bridlington. They go by the brand Seafret.

Their acoustic song “Give Me Something” is the title track for their upcoming ep which will be out in September.

***

This song is an older cut, but it’s new to me. The group is from LA… they are called Best Coast, and this lo-fi retro sounding rock & rolla is an early single of their’s from 2009.

“When I’m with you, I have fun.” d’aww.

***

Bastille….so hot right now. The early British single “Flaws” is charting on the alternative charts here in the BEST America. Let us do a Chainsmokers remix (yeah the #Selfie guys).

Who goes out on Mondays? #live

war on drugs
My friend Jenn went to Seattle to check out the Capital Hill Block Party last weekend. … sorry CAPITOL.

Lots of great pics on her social media from Emerald City and she got to see Philadelphia’s The War on Drugs.

The Hollywood Reporter posted their top records of 2014 (so far)…top of the list, The War on Drugs Lost in the Dream.

My friend James over at The Peak was talking about how red hot the single “Red Eyes” is on the radio in Vancouver right now…I had to pick up the record. Sunday was a lazy day. Coral and Maddy were at a birthday party and she left me with baby Jack to entertain for a few hours. I deceided we’d best use our time by heading heading downtown on a long walk, eating some Asian Street Food and buying records.

***

While downtown, we stopped at Foo Asian Street Food on Blanshard at Yates. Man, it was hot day, but they were all sold out of their watermelon & feta salad.

c’est dommage.

Oh wait… I can make that! I called the kitchen manager and asked him…and he gave me the recipe.

Foo’s Watermelon & Feta Salad

Pomegranate molasses & Chinese Black Vinegar dressing
Cubed watermelon
Chopped up cucumber
mint and cilantro
pepper mix (black and szechuan)
drizzle on some dressing
finish with crumbled feta

BOOM! It’s good.

My favourite record of 2014 (so far) is Cloud NothingsHere and Nowhere Else.  I played it for my 6-year-old daughter Madelyn…and she was not into it as much.

Maybe you are feeling the same way about the new Cloud Nothings.  I know I don’t.  I AM a big fan.

Madelyn Review
Yesterday I raced down to Ditch Records during lunch to pick up the new No Age record, An Object.

I put the long player on while cooking up some dinner.  We were sitting around, enjoying our spaghetti and meatballs when the final track came on, “Commerce, Comment, Commerce.”  The song features a bit of a drone to close out the record and Madelyn remarked that she did not like the sound.  I posted the quip on Facebook because I thought it was funny and BFF Leigh said I should record her for a radio bit.  So here we go…. maybe an ongoing segment, maybe not…maybe we’ll leave the album reviews to the pros?

It is her goal to be a pop-star so Jack White, I’ll be sending demos in like 10 years… My hope it that you may develop the world’s first hepta-coloured vinyl single… and then one colour is rainbow, so I don’t even know how many colours that is!

Which record should she review next?

Yesterday Coral called into my radio show of all places to tell me our next baby will be a boy.  We’re both very excited for December and its not because of PRESENTS for a change.

I was thinking back to when Madelyn was a baby.  Coral and I lived on Yates Street downtown in a little bedroom + den thing.  Maddy’s nursery was in the den.  Coral thought a room without windows was no place to raise a child so that is what made us respectable rate-payers and we bought our condo.  But for about the first three months of Madelyn’s life, we lived on Yates Street beside a Moxies.  I walked to work.  We pushed a stroller to the Market for groceries or the Starbucks at Quadra for a coffee.  We were on the ground floor so we even had a tiny yard!

During that time I listened to a lot of Grand Archives.  The Seattle band doesn’t seem to be very active these days…but I can always listen to “Swan Matches” and be transported back to laying on my couch in our little apartment on Yates Street with a brand new baby.

I wonder if (or hope) that a song rises up in December or January that will be as special for the new baby.

Merridale
I had a busy but fun and rewarding weekend.  Lots of DJing.  First at Sugar in support of the Rage and Tool tribute bands at Sugar.  A share of the profits were donated to Madelyn’s preschool… thank you for coming!

Saturday was petting zoo with some pre-school friends, Beacon Hill Park (the merry-go-round is savage and wonderful), picking up a Vancouver Millionaires jersey, and more DJing!

Sunday had Madelyn and I heading up to Merridale Estate Cidery.  My friend Jess was looking for some wedding playlists just in-case a wedding party decided to not hire entertainment, or bring an iPod but THEN decide a party would be nice (apparently it happens)…so if you get married at Merridale this summer… there is a back-up!

Such a perfect afternoon for a brunch, then some exploration on the farm.

Our soundtrack for the overlander up-and-down the MalahatBorn Ruffians!

Cruising with Madelyn at altitude, with the sunroof open and Born Ruffians jangling away was the best weekend EVAR!

That is a picture of one of Madelyn’s most loved stuffies…. “Sam The Meerkat.”

My daughter Madelyn goes to preschool…and to help raise some money we’re selling coupon books.  So much savings!  And just $25.  If you are into saving money as much as I am… throw me an email at jeremy@thezone.fm and we can sort out how you too can get your very own coupon book, and join the legions of people who are already saving.

Working in radio… I understand the power of a well produced audio commercial to move some units.  I asked Zach on the creative team to produce the commercial and he was so kind to make some time.  Thank you Zach!  You’ll also hear Caleb and Chelsea from Creative on the commercial.
