One of my favourite Vancouver bands, Bear Mountain, have a new indie-electro song called “Hopeful.”

I am amped for this song for a couple reasons. Number 1, NEW BEAR MOUNTAIN. That’s a celebration. Number 2, it is Rifflandia and I will always cherish the Bear Mountain set I saw all those nights ago in packed all ages studio space at 2:30AM.

The band will be releasing their second record sometime next year on Last Gang Records.

“This band, our music, Kenji’s artwork, and everything we do is really about unifying that relationship between technology and nature, analogue and digital,” says frontman Ian Bevis. “For us, there is something really stimulating about producing music and for the most part our songs are producer-based tracks. Where things get interesting is on stage when we translate those techniques into the live setting,” adds Kyle Statham. “When we’re up there we’re always rocking things out like a band usually would but we’re also bringing in this visual language and an element of storytelling, which takes shape in real time and in front of the audience.”

“This is our new song ‘Hopeful’. We made it thinking about the future, and being hopeful for what’s to come despite the past. We hope you like it!!”

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js*** lord-huron Lord Huron has released another single off his record Strange Trails. The song has a folky, blue collar rock vibe to it. And if you make it out to see the Robert Redford movie A Walk In The Woods, you might here a few Lord Huron tracks on the soundtrack.

1989

So Ryan Adams’ song-for-song reinterpretation of Taylor Swift’s 1989 is real. And we got out first listen today from Zane Lowe on Beats 1.

Ryan Adams – Bad Blood (CLICK THE LINK)

And you know what? I kinda really like it!

Tomorrow I’m looking forward to visits from Tokyo Police Club and Young Empires. I’ll try to get something posted up on here before I take off to Victoria for the weekend and Rifflandia!

Bass Drum of Death

If you like loud, fuzzy, boogy, hard rock, you should be able to slip easily into this song, “Left For Dead.”

I hope your computer speakers can go to 11… Mississippi’s Bass Drum of Death sound stellar. OK, so this record, Rip This, is a year-old…never you mind.

I first say Bass Drum of Death in 2011, when they opened for Japandroids.  That show was life affirming. Today I read they are currently on tour with one of CFOX’s favourite bands, Royal Blood.

Royal Blood will be on The Late Late Show with James Corden on September 22nd. On their fourth late night TV appearance they’ll perform the Much Mega Hit “Figure It Out.”

And I’m not sure what I think about this remix, but here we are.

Whoa…I wish that BDOD and Royal Blood tour would drift north to the Terminal City.

Buntzen

Started the day today with a hike at Buntzen. Coral and I had Jack and he’s only 20 months, so I won’t say it was an arduous hike…but we also made it to the Viewpoint and Jack walked pretty much the whole there, and the entire way back. That’s impressive. He was attacked by exactly zero cougars. I’ll call that a win.

MUSIC!

Alison Mosshart, Jack White and Company have shared another song off their September 25th record Dodge And Burn.

We’ve already heard The Dead Weather’s “I Feel Love (Every Million Miles)” and now we have this barn burner. “Cop and Go.”

Muse covered CHVRCHES. I am not going to come on here and tell you I love this cover. But it is a thing.

I wanna end with this beauty remix of Panama.

Off to Foo Fighters tonight at Rogers Arena. Coral is going to drop our daughter Madelyn off with me and we’ll check that out together. Dustin at CFOX asked if I had ear protection for her and I said, “the Foo Fighters aren’t *that* loud.”

And he said, “get ear plugs you dummy, you’ve already wrecked your ears and so NO bands are loud to you.”

huh.

I was reading about Motorhead’s new line of sex toys.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Neat. But while reading about them, I came across this most excellent cover of “Sympathy For The Devil” by Lemmy & Co.

I did this radio bit many moons ago where I pretended to pee in Jon Williams’ tea mug…and with pissing in mugs being red hot in the news right now I was trying to find it. I guess the signal was lost to the noise on the FM radio all those moons ago and I didn’t save it.

But my journeys reminded me of a couple great cover songs. I LOVE this Kings of Leon cover of Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own.”

And Jesse Roper’s Stevie Ray Vaughn is also super cool.

Finally…how about Titus Andronicus’ cover of The Weeknd? Dig it!

Happy Tuesday that feels like a Monday. Also first day of school. Took my daughter to her first day of grade two. I moved back to the city I grew up in…and my kid is going to the same elementary school I went to. What a trip.

VICE had an article today about how hot D&D is right now. I was like, “awesome.”

Yesterday, Matthew Good stopped by my radio program and we got to talking about his new record, Chaotic Neutral. The title comes from a character alignment in Dungeons & Dragons. When you buy a physical copy of the album, you’ll get a print of his hand drawn fantasy map for a place called Scarrow Foregate.

Matt Good’s love of cartography was inspired by medieval cartographer John Speed and also Jeffrey Beebe.

If you want to dive more into our complete conversation, here is the audio from our discussion.

We talk Dungeons & Dragons, map cartography, medieval typography, his scrapped record, finding inspiration and the changing tastes of Matt Good, touring and his challenges, his trip up North this summer, kids, Holly McNarland singing on Chaotic Neutral, Bones from Midnight Oil playing bass, and a 20th anniversary book of all his songs’ lyrics. Buy the new record Chaotic Neutral on September 25th.

Buy Chaotic Neutral on September 25th and SEE Matt Good also on the 25th at HMV on Robson. Tour announcement is coming next week.

T
he Chris Walla song “Kanta’s Theme” is so chill, it is cutting fjords in my head with glaciers operating on geological time.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

I kinda really like it. Chill.

Chris Walla we know and love from Death Cab For Cutie. Hey…remember when he played his final show with the band in Victoria? Neat.

New record is called Tape Loops…and as the title suggests, a tape based recording session where he loops some tapes and what not.

“I can’t change a closed, physical tape loop with a mouse-click or a keystroke, and that’s precisely the point,” Walla explains.  “Digital recording and editing often feels like working in a spreadsheet—it’s not always a place for dreams.”

Toronto’s Young Empires are so hot right now. Their debut LP, The Gates, is out on Friday and the single by the same name is popular on modern rock radio.

The band channels that electronic/indie rock vibe to create a fun and vibrant sound. Their first ep came out in 2012 and had more of a house energy, for this record they wanted to grow their sound.

We all knew that we wanted to make a record that was more mature,” says lead vocalist Matthew Vlahovich. ”We were 25 years old when we wrote our first one, now we’re in our thirties. We’ve all grown up on a lot of levels.”

The band is heading out on tour, here are our Pacific Northwest shows..

Sept 15 – Portland, OR – Analog Theater
Sept 16 – Seattle, WA – Tractor Tavern
Sept 17 – Vancouver, BC – Fortune Sound Club
Sept 19 – Victoria, BC – Rifflandia

borns

The rain has returned to Vancouver today. Wow. I love the rain and I love wandering around the city in the rain so I am feeling this grey Monday.

Bright song, for a wet day. Borns.

Not a new NEW song, but they’re trying to sell it to Canadian radio. I doubt you’ll hear this on a radio station like CFOX but maybe on a modern rock station.

Personally I love Borns. “You make my heart beat like the rain.”

Burger Records style garage rock from Together Pangea. I don’t know what it is with this lazy hazy rock and roll lately, but I loves it.

One more because it is so groovy. The Smoking Trees.

Happy Monday. Go with yourself.

downtown

They say the rains are a comin’ to Vancouver this weekend. It might rain more in the next two days then it has rained all summer. And I’ll be taking a long weekend in Victoria while my wife is in Seattle. Ha. Ain’t that the way.

Decided I better get after THIS day as best I can with a Yolk’s food truck poached egg and seat with a view on the street.

Hey Music Blog reader… Jamie and I have been working on a new webseries taking you on a tour of Vancouver’s fine craft breweries. I’d love if you took less than 3 minutes to watch this. Maybe even share the video? Views are good. Thank you!

Tomorrow will see new records from Carly Rae Jepsen (who I kinda love right now) and Atlas Genius.

Ms Jepsen doesn’t have her new single on Soundcloud which is a major bummer. But Top 40…you know?

I’ll take this remix. It bangs.

If there is any justice in this world, Carly Rae Jepsen will have the biggest pop record of the year.

Atlas Genius channels a little Imagine Dragons with this cut from Inanimate Objects.

Have a great weekend!

Go with yourself.
