The Times Colonist asked, “should we invite him to Victoria?”  Heck yes we should.

Phoenix rocked Vancouver the other night, and it turns out I missed quite the party!

I went home for lunch today.  Coral went to get a haircut and Nana was over watching Mads and I crafted a yummy portobello mushroom sandwich.  Success.

Nana and I sat down to the news and our sandwiches at noon like we used to do when she looked after Madelyn more often and out on the street we noticed cops everywhere.  They had the street blocked off and the SWAT team out, an armoured car, the dogs and officers everywhere.  Standing around in the pouring rain waiting for “Andrew” to come out peacefully.  I guess Andrew thought if he ignored them long enough, they’d go away?  or maybe he was truly and magnificently coked out and thought it was a cruel extension of the Star-Trek rerun he was watching…. I dunno, but he had other ideas than surrendering.  And so the good folks of the Victoria Police Department huddled in the rain.

Now this “Andrew” character, Coral I know him well.  He has some of the most dramatic tantrum and domestics outside our building.  They tend to happen more often in the summer but they also happen any day.  Wednesday morning at 4AM?  “Sure I’ll call my girlfriend a prostitute crackhead whore and she can yell worse back.  And it can spill it on the street and continue for over an hour.”

There will be no one missing Andrew when he finally gets dragged out of his apartment to spend two-years-less-a-day at Wilkinson.  It’ll be almost 2 years of bliss for me.

Drives me crazy.  I hate the “law” and the “government” as much as anyone and I truly believe we should be free to govern ourselves however we feel fit, but when your idea of a drug filled bender interferes with my life, we gotta problem and you gotta go.  In the olden days, Andrew would be tossed outside the walls our village and the Sasquatch would take him away.

Maybe this ties in, or maybe it doesn’t, but did I see on the news yesterday that California and Washington State are thinking of legalizing it?

I seem to recall that whenever talk of legalizing hits BC, the anti-druggie lobby says; “but what George W. do to us?”

Looks like nothing.  He ain’t the president anymore and if California and Washington legalize it, its open season.

On a hockey note, the Abbotsford AHL team The Heat had their first sellout of the year last night against the Manitoba Moose.  I saw in the paper that the Heat average about 3,700 fans a game, less than the ECHL Salmon Kings.  Could Victoria rock an AHL team?  Could we wrestle the Canucks affiliation away from Manitoba but before Abbotsford does?

The Heat are the only team in west for the AHL.  Rumblings I’ve heard speculated on say the AHL wants to come out west.  Could the AHL pickup the top ECHL west coast teams?  Victoria vs. Abbotsford rivalry would be amazing.

The Mighty Ducks don’t have an AHL affiliate and are the only team without one…. hmmm.

Earlier today I blogged about Japandroids singer/guitarist Brian King’s Vancouver Street shirt.  See the video of him rocking that shirt!

Pol Plastino mentioned on the ole twitter machine that we should make up a Victoria version… and well, here is the prototype courtesy James_LRR.

We were inspired by Japandroids for the idea, but Adrian messaged me that the design for this shirt has roots from a Beatles t-shirt design.  This is a pretty cool: Experimental Jetset

So I guess my next step is finding a groovy t-shirt to print it on and someone to print it.  Anyone know how or who to get that part done?

This picture makes me laugh.  My brother Matt stepped into the year 2009 days before with ring in the big 10 with a smart-phone.  He snapped this last night after Christmas dinner while we were all huddled around the TV watching “The Hangover” for the third time.

My old man got us all Team Canada Hockey shirts for Christmas.  Like everyone.  Coral got a jersey, Caitlin, my sister.  He kept one for himself.

I don’t care what your personal views on the Olympic are, Olympic hockey to me is the best tournament and I’ll be watching.  I still hope to some how finagle tickets to a game, but at the very least, I might burn some holiday time I have saved up and be in the city if Team Canada makes the final.

The laws of positive attraction right?  If I am in the right place at the right time, who knows? Maybe I’ll get in the building?

Christmas was fun as usual.  Madelyn was rightly spoiled and getting to an age where she loves toys.  She might not get “Christmas” but she sure gets Upsy Daisy dolls and play Kitchens.  She has been going a little overboard with the chocolates.

I am back in Victoria today because I had to work a radio show, but then I’ll be off to Kelowna for a couple days before coming back to DJ on New Years Eve.  If you’re looking for something fun still, maybe consider NYE at the Hotel Rialto.

Coming back to Victoria was fun. I got to ride the ferry by myself!  Riding the ferry by myself is a rare treat since having Madelyn.  I forgot how easy and pleasant the boat is when I walk on just before sailing, read a National Geographic and walk off the other side.  Gave me a great opportunity to decompress and daydream about escaping to the South Georgia Island.

If you ask me what I want to be when I grow up, on the list between Medieval Knight and Ensign Baker on the USS Enterprise; would be explorer.

There are not too many places left on the map to explore anymore.  Its has a future job prospect level that is low, right around steam engine operator and radio broadcaster.  Still the idea is romantic.

National Geographic  was talking about these remote islands in the South Oceans near Antarctica that teem with arctic critters like penguins and seals and whales and any number of birds.  There are old rusted out whaling stations, some old cannons from World War Two, a restored church, a museum and not much else.  Some scientists a reckon.

I think it would be pretty neat to go there.  I could just hire on to some sort of Adventure Tourist outfit I suppose, but their rates start at $11,000 US!

Maybe after I win the lotto but before I launch my AM radio station?  maybe…

Cool, Jason Lamb was telling me this morning about this video a dude in Uruguay made.  This film creator had a budget of around $500 and made an epic sci-fi 5 minute production.

Because of its high quality and Youtube-sensation-ess, a Hollywood Mucky Muck offered in a 30 million dollar contract to make a Hollywood style blockbuster.  I love it.

Comedian Jon Lajoie will be in Victoria on December 15th to perform at the MacPherson Playhouse.  Today I had a chance to talk to him on the radio.

We talk about his love for Rebecca De Mornay, his character from the FX show “Taco,” and a bunch of his internet videos.  We end by talking about the weather because I’m cool like that.

We are all living in a village and a terrible horde of Mongols descend on our hamlet.  So many Mongols that there is no way to fight them, we all have to go down into the cellar and hide.  Here we are, 100 hundred of us, huddling in the cellar waiting for the villainous Mongols to move on, if we make one tiny sound they will find us and slaughter us all!

And you brought your baby and the baby is hungry and is about to cry.

Would you smother your baby and kill her to save the village?

What a crazy question right?  I was listening to Radiolab tonight and their topic was “Abstract Thought.”  Have a listen, Killing Babies, Save the World.

If we asked our little village of 100 what they would do, it would split down the middle 50/50.  Half of us would kill the baby and half could never.

That split would likely fall down the line of who has kids and who does not because if the question is, “Would Jeremy kill Madelyn to save all you fuckers?”  then my answer would be no, I would not.  Sorry folks, but you’re all target practice for those murderous Mongols’ arrows.

However, if the question is, “would you kill A baby (no baby in particular, but just A baby) to save the lives of 100 people?” your (and even my) rationale brain would say, yes it must, sadly, be so.

weird stuff to think about.  The podcast goes on to discuss this abstract scenario.

You’re walking along the Sea Wall sporting a mighty fine $1,000 suit (or you ladies might be rocking a signed R Patts T-shirt) and you happen upon a drowning woman in the ocean.  Do you jump into the sea to save her but ruin your new suit?

The answer for almost all of us is, yes I would jump in the sea and ruin my $1,000 suit to save the life of this drowning woman.

Now you feel like a hero and you get home and in your mailbox is a letter asking for a donation of $1,000 to save the life of A girl somewhere else in the world.  Do you cut the cheque and drop it in the mail?  The answer for most of us is… no.

Why?

To quote Pearl Jam, its evolution baby.  The woman we know, we see drowning… we save because basically, she is part of our tribe.  We have an emotional attachment to the situation.  The woman dying of starvation in Ethiopia is an abstract thought.  What lady?  who? where?  never heard of Sierra Leone… and we move on.  Am I bad guy?  Kinda when you think about it, but not really because my simple brain can’t comprehend it.  I have no emotional connection to the starving lady across the world but I have an emotional connection to $1,000 err $300 in my bank account.

This is a super duper problem because right now, the biggest issues facing our planet, pollution/global warming/war/starvation are global abstract problems.  neat.

I love listening to the radio.  When I am not working on the radio and I am driving around I enjoy punching around the dial.  I find that I am more likely to find something I enjoy somewhere on the FM dial than I am am poking around my TV.

Today I was listening to the CBC and they had this great documentary about the history of the Steam Engine.

Listen to the Story of Steam. amazing bit of radio both sonically (sounded great) but also a mighty fine story.  Basically it talks about how huge the invention of the steam engine was for all of us today.  If you’re a dork like me, it’ll be worth your time to listen to the show.

stolen without a gun from Cory Monteith's twitter @frankenteen

Last night (11/17 2009), Glee star Cory Monteith was the guest on Strombo’s The Hour.

If you click the link you can watch the episode; around the 38 minute mark George and Cory talk about his Victoria band Porchlife and Cory sends out some love for my podcast.  Thank you Cory!

Listen to the Segment: Cory Monteith Talks About Capital Rock City
The Original CRC Podcast: CRC #80

During the little segment, Cory couldn’t recall how I came up with Porchlife demos.  I got an email from a Zoner named Nick The Viking who sent me the demo files.  Thank you Nick! and thank you Cory for the mention on the CBC.  It may not have translated to a rush of hits for the podcast, but it made me feel like a rock star late last night.
