Ahhh GOLD! Right, it happened yesterday afternoon. The Team Canada Boys rocked the gold medal and capped a great couple weeks in British Columbia.
I am so happy they triumphed in the nail biter against our arch nemesis country, the USA in a thrilling overtime win. If they had lost, it would have put a bit of a spoiler on the whole 14 Gold medal record and a Canada best 26 medals at Winter Olympics.
I get it, gold in like ice dance and I dunno, other sports… but for me, the hockey is the only one that really mattered. Its going to be kinda hard to go back to NHL hockey on Tuesday (Nucks vs. Rick Nash and Blue Jackets).

I am happy for my friend Tyson. He got a job playing keyboards for Florida punkers Against Me!.
We all know and love the T Razer from his days playing bass in former Zone bands of the month Moneyshot and keys/guitar for Acres of Lions.

Against Me will be in Victoria on Wednesday playing a Zone Show with Billy Talent, Alexisonfire and Cancer Bats at the Arena.
Razer will get to travel across the country with the Florida band playing arena show for the next month or so (I can’t remember how long the tour is). While Tyson is on the road with Against me, Acres of Lions lead guy, Jeff will be playing with another Victoria band, Theset. Theset were added to the SnoCore tour, criss-crossing the Great White North and in Victoria on April 4th.

Man, look at that robot trying to laser gun those wild horses. That just isn’t right at all. at all.
Even that rainbow doesn’t lighten mood. Not one bit.
This record cover that tells the tale of woe for these poor horses is from the Toronto electronic band Woodhands. What they have against the horses (or maybe for laser shooting robots) I don’t know, but I downloaded some songs they other day and they sound alright.

My computer world is a little rattled right now. Coral and I went out to buy a new Macbook on Friday because the Toshiba is right screwed up and it died just before my DJ set.
I got the Macbook mostly ready for my DJ sets, need to still organize my playlists and the like. And its a bit of a learning curve and awkward for me. I have always been on a Microsoft PC so I’ll need to practice I guess. And our internet at home has been weird. The Mac doesn’t seem to be jiving on our WIFI. When I get the Toshiba reformatted, I’ll be able to see if its a router or Mac thing.
One thing I am excited to do, is make podcasts from home! The Mac comes with Garageband which is a program that allows me to record and edit audio. fun. I’ll just need a mic for home as the stock one in the Macbook sounds like suck.

Sasquatch! returns to The Gorge in Quincy, WA May 29-31 (Memorial Day Weekend) following early sellouts and rave reviews the past several years. bah, I’m so stupid. I totally flaked on the fact that one of my favourite bands of 2009, The Rural Alberta Advantage, is coming to Victoria tomorrow. AND its now sold out.
Oh I am a sad panda bear. sad emoticon, go! 😦
But in positive news (unless of course its sold out), Four Tet will be in Vancouver on February 24th and I’ll be in Coquitlam celebrating Madelyn’s second year of life and the 2010 Olympics. If it can be done and I can be on a ferry early enough Thursday morning, I *might* try and go. I say might because the logistics could be more hassle than the value.
But I read a great interview with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) that just re-ignited my love for his style of electronic beats. (and the dude went to high school with the man that is Burial? SWA?)

Pitchfork: On the new album, there’s a track called “Pablo’s Heart”, which is 11 seconds of a swooshing, pulsing beat. Is that title to be taken literally?
Four Tet: It is Pablo’s heartbeat. Pablo is my godson. His father recorded the heartbeat on his mobile phone at the doctor’s office and sent me the recording. His parents were coming to see a live show I was doing, so I took that sound and played it through the sound system. It was really loud and sounded like a mad modular synth when the bass was pumped up. It was this really crazy scene. His heart at the time was probably the size of a pea and I was using it to make this immense sound. He’s not very old, so he won’t understand when he sees the record. I put it on as a little present to him.
Pitchfork: It’s your Herbert moment. Does that have any relation to the end of the track “Plastic People”, when it sounds like there’s a kid hitting some bells or percussion? Is that Pablo as well?
Four Tet: I was working on music while staying with some friends of mine, and their little girl Opal was playing this little toy piano and I recorded it. If I listen back to my old record, Rounds or something, an album I made over a period of a year or so, it’s almost like a diary for me. I don’t think I listen to it like anybody else would. For me, it’s about all the memories from that time, how I made each song, where I was and what was going on. I always put little references to my life in the music I’ve made. It’s no different with this record, I’ve just done a couple of things more explicit this time, like calling the track “Pablo’s Heart”.
In the past it would have been buried and I wouldn’t have told anyone about it. I wanted him to have a little gift almost, a sound off the record. There aren’t lyrics or anything in my music. I don’t have any explicit thing for people to read into, so I like putting a lot of personal touches in the music. If I bare my soul in bits and make it personal, I think people can sense that when they hear it. I don’t know what it is. People read into the music. I have a feeling that they can believe that I’m trying to put some emotion forward. It’s not just some technical exercise.
I love it, so much exciting stuff to try and pull out of the music. But its also interesting for me to read about the things that are real, that this artist is pouring into his music. It was a very good interview if you care… read it.

I’ve been blogging about music lots lately. I think that is a good thing. I don’t quite get as many hits on my music posts generally. But at the same time, my biggest days have been music posts and my catalog posts seem to be the ones that still get discovered. That is kinda neat. I’ve always had a challenge with that. I like music and talking about music, but it doesn’t generate too much emotion in most people that find my blog. Oh well… its my blog.
The other thing I’ve been trying to feel is some zen. Getting tired of fighting with people about shit all the time. Twitter turns the hyper engine on overdrive. I’ve been catching myself a few times and not posting stuff I want to say because I weigh out whether its worth the debate and drama.
Focus is good. There are some other things I want to start working on too, but it will have to wait… always waiting.
A couple things I am waiting for, Vancouver this weekend and Sasquatch in May. They announce the line-up tomorrow. Can’t wait.

I’ll be downtown next weekend for the Olympics and if it comes time to enjoy a pint or a bite and there is an automatic gratuity I’ll be pushing off to the next restaurant or packing a lunch. I guess that is freedom. You can gouge tourists and I can eat elsewhere.

Its a power pop explosion from Portland indie darlings The Thermals.

Ok, its is a very basic, balls to the floor power pop anthem. Some hipsters were barking all over the internet because they expect more from The Thermals, but its better than anything Weezer has put out since Pinkerton and at least as good as most Sloan songs.
The lore behind the song is neato gang:
Don’t get us wrong – Buffalo, NY is a swell American town. But it’s not the easiest city to play, ask any band! So when The Thermals, on a recent tour, found themselves staring down the barrel of a less-than-spectacular night in Buffalo, The Thermals comforted themselves with the thought that the next day they were headed for CANADA. Toronto, to be exact, where they would headline an amazing sold out show at The Horseshoe Tavern. Sitting in the van in Buffalo, Thermals guitarist and singer Hutch Harris picked up a guitar and strummed a few chords, and sang a few lines about going to CANADA. Kathy Foster walked up and sang “Whoa Whoa-Oh Whoa!” as if on cue. Drummer Westin Glass set a fat beat to it at soundcheck et voila, “Canada”. Seriously, I’m not making this up. I mean, listen to the song. It doesn’t sound like it took The Thermals longer than half an hour to write “Canada”. But therein lies its brilliance! Totally off the cuff, yet totally sincere, “Canada” is an instant classic, a raucous, joyous ode to our brothers and sisters to the north. CANADA! Where everyone is funny, friendly and ready to have a beer or seven with you. CANADA! Where we’ll have everything we need! CANADA! The country we aspire to be.
and about the lyrics:
The lyrics to “Canada” contain the line “Sittin’ all alone / Pick up the phone and call Ramona / Go to Canada”. Ramona refers to Thermals sound woman Anna Lockwood, who sometimes goes by the name Ramona Flowers, a character in the Canadian comic book Scott Pilgrim, by Canadian author Bryan Lee O’Malley. Scott Pilgrim is published by Oni Press, who share a hometown of Portland, Oregon with The Thermals. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, a live-action film adaptation of the comic starring Canadian actor Michael Cera, is due in August of this year. Scott Pilgrim is named after a song by the Canadian band Plumtree.

I have a mad man crush for the Japandroids.
The Vancouver band will be releasing five limited press vinyl singles this year because they won’t be able to manufacture the time to record a follow up for Post Nothing (2009).
I’ve been streaming the first single “Art Czars” all afternoon. I am not allowed to play with my credit card right now, or I so would have pre-ordered the 7 inch single. Wait? I gotta fix my record player first… THEN I’ll pre-order the single. Pay day is what, the 15th? OK, remember to fix the record player.

I reckon to hear the news that the Japandroids will be playing the festival. They were supposed to play last year but for some reason had to cancel. I do know of at least one Victoria band playing… but I better not spoil the surprise.

I thought this was pretty cool. Trolling the doubleUdoubleUdots today, I saw an interesting fact. Only four independent bands in the history of Billboard’s modern rock chart have ever reached number 1.

I know we should be thinking winter Olympics in this part of the world… but with the weather so nice, I can’t help but look ahead to baseball season.
Our local pro team is the Victoria Seals and in their second season they will begin by playing the new expansion team from Maui.
The Victoria Baseball Blog had a look at their new jerseys. I am not so much a fan, but David Eleanor seemed to like.
ahhh, I don’t know… But I do know I’d love if we could organize a Zone road trip to Maui…

On Madelyn’s birthday (Feb 24th), an artist will be playing the Biltmore in Vancouver called Four Tet.
This UK electronic man is making some music that is getting me all hot and bothered lately. As I have been searching for fun, avant garde, loungey music for my weekends at the Rialto, Four Tet hits the mark.
I think part of the reason I like Four Tet so much is because he reminds me of Explosions in the Sky. have a listen to “She Just Likes to Fight” and tell me that song wouldn’t fit on any EITS record. Great music to decompress to.
You might know Four Tet as the guy who opened for Radiohead back in the Hail to the Thief days or as the guy who remixed RH’s “Scatterbrain.”
(ha Sara P just walked into my work space to close the door… maybe not everyone loves Four Tet like me!).

There are no clean coffee mugs at work right now, which is a real heel on the groin, and not in a sexual kinda way. Likely that is for the best. I got to stop drinking so many mugs of coffee. A couple weeks ago, before my staycation, I did a great job of keeping my coffee intake under control. Lots of water, and I felt really good two weeks ago. I better get back on that.

I am a sucker for cover songs. Cover songs are a real challenge on the Zone because, well I don’t really know. I find whenever I play a cover song, I am subjected to a torrent of hate calls. Calm down people, its just music. one that I want to punch up today I know I’ll take a few lumps from… but I don’t care. I think it is a pretty good spin on a modern rock staple. Vampire Weekend tackling Rancid “Ruby Soho.”
Also on that Abeano post is a mix created by Rostam Batmanglij from Vampire Weekend. He did a little “minimix” of a Vampire weekend song, some other track and a Lykke Li cut.
