OK, not exactly BRAND new…last week maybe? New enough for me. I have loved Band of Horses for many years. They are definitely a band that both my wife and I enjoy together which makes them special to me. Coral notice don her timehop that it was on this day, 9 years ago that we moved in together to this hip condo on Yates Street in Victoria. 12 months later we had a little baby named Madelyn and had bought a place. Huh.

New record is called Why Are You OK and will be out in June. Read some details on Pitchfork.

Coral and I did a brewery tour on Saturday. (video coming soon!)

Vancouver Brewery Tours showed us a great time….if you’re ever in Vancouver and want something fun to do to get you out in the city, drinks some good beer, and learn a few things you gotta do it.

Sunday was a gardening day! Hadst eh kids in the garden getting dirty…and maybe a little too much sun. Yikes!

a knight of the seven kingdoms

I am amped on the Game of Thrones being back. It got me thinking about the Dunk & Egg prequels….and I can’t find any of them. Pretty sure I loaned out the first two graphic books and then I accidentally donated the Warriors anthology which featured the the third story.

So I re-ordered it!  When I’m finished Pillars of the Earth I’ll reread this. Nice.

I am prepping to DJ tonight at Match in New West and was trolling some remixes and came across this one from ZAYN. Coral perked up and said, “I LOVE Pillowtalk.”

Good enough for me, I’ll add this song to the rotation.

Better Call Becky with the good hair….

Beyonce released her 6th album on Saturday night. It began with an HBO special for her visual album. On the record Beyonce is dealing marital breakdown, infidelity, sadness…and then reconciliation, healing and empowerment. There is a lot going on with the record sonically.
Also a huge selection of samples, features and guest writing credits… The song “Hold Up” has Beyonce riffing off an old Yeah Yeah Yeah’s lyric from their song “Maps”, that was changed up a tiny bit in a 2011 tweet from Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend.

One of her songs features the ferocious guitar of Jack White and a sample of Led Zeppelin. Check out “Don’t Hurt Yourself.” It’s a rock and roll jammer.

bloodboy

Trust the machine….well sometimes. I was listening to Thrice on soundcloud and the gremlins dished up an artist I’ve never heard before after. California’s electro popper Bloodboy. Her song “Human Female” sounds great. It made me take notice.

Also… c’mon that new Thrice? Magic.

No-Liars

No Liars from Victoria released their music video today for the song “Catalyst.”

The band is in Vancouver tomorrow for a show at Venue and then Friday in Victoria at Distrikt.

Punktastic had this quote from the band: “The song is an expression of betrayal, and all the things that go through your head when you realize you’ve had the wool pulled over your eyes by someone you trusted,” the band explain. “We wanted to capture the raw energy of the band’s live performance in a bourgeoisie estate where our kind of music isn’t normally allowed.”

wall

Jam opened a new location in Vancouver on Beatty….I walked by it the other day around 11AM…and it was not too busy. Returned today with Jack and Coral, lined up down the block. Bullshit man.

No worries…Meat & Bread was just down the street, so we went there. Great tunes smashing while we ate meatball sandwiches.

the girl on the train

How cool is this… Blitz//Berlin….the Toronto based band that us West Coast kids will always remember as Theset….had their song “Surfboard Fire” reworked for the Girl on the Train movie trailer.

And that sure does sound like Kanye West from his 2008 jammer “heartless.”

And here’s some banger cover/remix….because it’s Friday.

7.THE CORAL 3

The Coral have been blasting out some fine alternative rock from England since ’96. Their 8th full length record came out last month called Distance Inbetween.

My wife’s name is Coral…so I always perk up when an email from The Coral’s hype team shows up in the inbox.

***

Let’s keep it British… must be all the History of England podcasts I’m listening to or Pillars of the Earth I’m reading.

Catfish the Bottlemen have a new single called “7.” Now here;’s the thing music promoters….it drives me nuts when you send me an email to blog a song but the song doesn’t exist anywhere. Like what are you even doing? Why would you send me an email to post, but then have nothing to post? Soundcloud…soundcloud. Youtube if you must (but Hype Machine doesn’t read the youtube embeds off my blog).

I like the band so I punched around to find a version of the song…so I guess your mind games worked? Fuck me.

New record is called The Ride and it’s out on May 27th.

Here’s the band playing their new single “7” in a “live lounge” setting for Portland’s KINK.

Love the song. Love the band.

Also colour me new…I had no idea there were two modern rockers in Portland. I always jam 94/7 Alternative Portland. Huh.

In other news… It has been straight up summer in Vancouver the past few days. Mid to high 20s in April….fufffffffffff.

expo 86

My buddy Alex posted on his Facebook that he discovered an “almost mint condition” Expo ’86 poster cleaning out his parent’s place.

Nice. He was giving it away, so I met him downtown today and he gave it to me! Amazing.

Thanks Alex! We met at a taco shop on Hastings called La Taqueria. It is Taco Wednesday? 6 tacos for the price of 4. And they had horchata on  the menu. Wait…doesn’t Vampire Weekend sing about horchata? Yes, side one, track one from their 2010 record Contra. After indulging…I get it, delicious.
