According to my Last FM page, here is what has been getting the most play at home over the past 7 days.

01) The National
02) Jimmy Eat World
03) Face to Face
04) By A Thread
05) Explosions in The Sky
06) Coheed and Cambria
07) Led Zeppelin
07) Braid
07) Fleet Foxes
10) The Frames
10) Grand Archives

That sounds about right.  As you might notice, heavily influenced by the top 20n records thing I wrote the other day, revisiting some albums.  And Explosions in the Sky get played all the time.  They’d be higher on the list, but their songs are about 8 minutes each, so they get half the spins of say… Face to Face.

In car, its all the new Franz Ferdinand or even some Gaslight Anthem.

Madelyn turns one next Tuesday.  The big birthday party in on Sunday, fun.

She almost walks, she almost talks… but almost doesn’t pay the bills! do better baby!

I was thinking about adding some work to make some more money.  Before I even advertised that I was looking for work (kinda, there were some emails and some rejections or no replies…), two companies contacted me looking for my expertise.  Neat.  No deals closed so no job attained yet.  But if it happens then I can’t wait to share some future projects on here.

The work will be welcome.

We decided to up our level of catering for the wedding a few notches (OK a bunch of notches!).  Our good friend Alix works for a company called Feys and Hobbs and they do A-list event food.  We had a fairly frugal budget but they asked to make a bid anyways.  Sure enough, their price was above what we could pay but the quality is way above… so two things happened… we asked our friend Alix to get on her knees (as in begged, nothing sexual  you filthies!) to her boss for us to get us a better price (achieved) and Coral’s father stepped up with a contribution for our catering.  So Coral and I are basically back to our old financial commitment for the B-level food but we can deliver the A-level experience to our family and friends.  Needless to say, Coral and I are very happy and grateful.

Thank you Alix and Rob and Roberta!

This generosity comes on top of money already contributed by my folks which (depending how much people drink) should cover the bar… so the next morning when you’re puking up my Feys and Hobbs in the toilet cuz you’re so hung over, you can cheers, Grandma Mom and Grandpa Jack!

It has been a challenging month for me but is now looking up.  The Clubhouse had a great crowd on Tuesday which I hope is the start of some momentum heading into Spring.  I have some stellar ideas and some contacts to try and make those ideas reality and finally a couple promising leads on some more work so I can pays me bills and save for our wedding.  Actually last night I started sketching out a game changer concept for wi-fi radio! whoa, blew my own mind last night.  Bad cuz I didn’t get much sleep, good because… well its a good idea.

Next week, an interview with the local author of the book “Becoming Batman,” Dr. Paul Zehr.  Capital Rock City has an interview with Carpenter, in town Friday to open for Gob @ Lucky Bar.  I am working on interviews with Chixdiggit and John Franco of By A Thread.

“In almost every market, the boring slot is filled. The product designed to appeal to the largest possible audience already exists, and displacing it is awfully difficult. The real growth comes with products that annoy, offend, don’t appeal, are too expensive, too cheap, too heavy, too complicated, too simple — too something.
Seth Godin from his book ‘Purple Cow.’

I was reading THIS BLOG post last night.  I thought it was pretty amazing.  The branding gurus are talking about coffee, but they could easily be talking about radio.  I found it very inspiring.

Just thinking about those silly nuclear subs that collided in the ocean the other day.

What were they thinking? How I imagined it played out.

The song at the end is Geggy Tah’s “Dumb Submarine.”

That’s all I got

Having a kid is good for a lot of things. Today, it is for healthy eating choices. This time last year… lunch would have likely been a a coke and salt (a sandwich with salty meats, fast food, chips… maybe just a spoonful of salt).  But now, I need to feed the kid, so I just eat what she eats.  Raw whole fruits and veggies.  Never any pop (well I sneak her a sip but Coral has a hurricane like fit!).

We saw this documentary on Kentucky on the TV the other day.  I guess it wasn’t a “documentary” in the truest sense, it was a Dateline or 20/20 or whatever the show is with Diane Sawyer.  She went to the backwoods of Deliverance country and discovered that the hillbillies feed their kids Mountain Dew.  Fucking gross.

My old man spends a lot of time in Kentucky for business, I’ll need to ask him about that.

Madelyn is eating, I am reading my music news.  About to head to the studio.  I am going to start playing around with a new show idea that I want to get put on the radio.  It might not be done today, but if/when it is, I’ll post a pilot here for you to have a listen to.  I’d love your feedback.

I saw this music video on A Morning, didn’t realize these girls were so cute.

That’s all I got.  I need to get Madelyn out of her chair and tidy up before Nana comes to look after her this afternoon.

Go with yourself.

Since we’re jibber jabbering (or I’m going on about lists) lets have a look at the first ever Jeremy’s Top Bands.

I signed up for Last FM last week so now I have my own personal chart of fave bands on my media player at home for the week.

01) The National
02) Propagandhi
03) The Killers
04) Bruce Springsteen
05) The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

and my write in vote is The Boxer Rebellion which I’ve been jamming out at work in the studio but I don’t have a Last FM scrobber thingy there.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day.  Coral says she doesn’t celebrate the day, but I do… so we do. Ha.  I am hosting an event at Element tomorrow if you’re looking to party on a Saturday night.  Bring your special someone or come with friends.  We have all sorts of fun shenanigans planned!

Before the big day, I think we’ll cook up a scrumptious dinner.  I saw David Fey and Rod (My aunt Melanie’s brother) on A Morning today cooking up something I’d like to attempt.  But try finding a website with the details and you’ll be disappointed.

Should you be fortunate enough to get laid on Valentine’s Day… Kid Carson posted this neat-O! link on his twitter.

Devine Pleasure Poses?  Yes please.

OK, I better get in the shower… its almost 11!  I got a ton of work to do today.

Go with yourself.

Fist off… David Eleanor checked the Soundscan to see what Victorian’s are buying.

***

82 copies of “Tonight: Franz Ferdinand” sold in Victoria in it’s first week.
A distant second to Bruce Springsteen, who sold 238 of “Working On A Dream”

Other Modern Rockers in the top 10:

4. Kings of Leon – Only By The Night…60 copies.  (up 50 from last week?
not too sure why)
8.  Killers – Day and Age…38 copies. (up 18 from last week)

On Note:

Despite national and international praise, Nickelbacks “Dark Horse” was OUT
SOLD by Franz Ferdinand this week!  82-67.

***

Now, in Nickelback’s defense (not that they need my help), Nickelback’s Dark Horse has been put since November, the fact that is still sold 67 copies last week goes to show… there are a couple Nickelback fans out there.

But overall, not a bad list. The Boss at the top (where he deserves to be), Franz, Kings of Leon and Killers all big sellers in the Capital.

This next email is maybe a “do better next time email?”  I dunno…

Hey Sara/Jeremy,

My son tried calling to ask you a question during the picks at 6 tonight and obviously got the answer he didn’t want.  “Go ask your dad”… J

His question was “Why is there a right angle triangle but not a left angle?”

My son’s name is D. (he’s eight ) and was pretty disappointed with Jeremy’s response, so I’m hoping you could help him out.

I said maybe he could get a song (Jambi of all songs) on instead, but we weren’t able to get through after that.  This wasn’t surprising.

We moved to Vancouver in June, and he has developed quite a relationship with your station.  We listen everyday in the car.

Keep up the good work guys, I don’t miss the Fox at all.

Cheers,

Shawn

hmmm, I wish I had kept the audio for this call, I’d play it for you.  It wasn’t a:

“grrr stupid kid go ask your dad.”

It was more a:

“ahahaha, good question, I wish I knew the answer.  I failed math.  Maybe that is a question to ask your Dad.  Keep on rocking little Zoner.”

and I hung up.  The kid never made a request.  So I don’t know… why is there no left angle?  Maybe Sara P will tackle it during Ask Sara P?

oh right.  Passchendaele is out on DVD now, and I am going to buy it and watch it.  In all honesty, not the best war movie ever made… but arguably the best Canadian war movie.  The movie starts fantastically (bayonette to the skull anyone?) and ends almost as fantastically.

There is a whole lot of |romance” that bogs down the middle the of the film for budgetary reason (I hope that was the reason) but it is interesting to see some vintage 1915 era Calgary.

The movie picks up at the end, so have faith if you’re watching and going, WTF?  It gets pretty awesome when Paul Gross ships back over.  The end end, sorta silly… but I think on DVD I’ll enjoy the movie because I can get right to what I want to see.

The key to success, and this isn’t revolutionary, is to be compensated based on your passion.

Holy shit!  it is that easy!

I was reading ZoeyJane the other day say that she made something like $700 for blogging.  I think that is pretty cool.  I don’t know how long she has been writing, but $700 is a triumph.  To get paid to do what you’d do anyways is something that maybe we all wanna do.

I wanna make radio, I wanna play music, I wanna talk about I dunno, stuff, and somehow I managed to get paid to do that (for now at least).

If you are wondering, where are all the jobs?  The future of jobs in Canada is creation.  Something like 30% of all Americans that earn a pay cheque bet their mortgage on what they create! That to me, is pretty fucked up (in a good way).  Taking something that wasn’t there before, and making it… or thinking about a process that we all do everyday, throwing it out the window and doing it completely different.  I think about shit like that all the time.  And the spark flickers in my head, but then I come to work and do what radio DJs do everyday.  Hmmm… not going to break my show out by doing that.  BUT that is the safer way to operate… and I got a mortage.  hmmm.

I was thinking about the skate boarding movie while lying in bed tonight.  Dogtown and Z Boys?  I think that is what its called.  These kids just hung out all day skate boarding, partying, surfing and repeat.  Thats all… their passions right.  Some of them grow up and start skate boarding companies, the rest is Hollywood.

I think that is pretty cool.  What did you sit around doing all day, everyday when you had all the time to do it?  No kids, no bills, school was just a tribal gathering place, you had half a tank of gas in the car…. what did you do?

Maybe if you can jump in a time machine, and go back to that person, that you were, maybe you can answer the root question, what is your passion?

ZoeyJane had people pay her $700 last month to tell stories about her life and challenges.

Coral and I were watching the Office today.  At the end of the episode, just before 30 Rock, Jim was going around the Office to collect $3 for a birthday cake.  When he got to Creed, Creed pulled out a $3 bill.  I laughed and laughed, my brother Matt used to always say, “That’s queerer than a three dollar bill.”

Did you know?

That when I post some audio, you don’t have to download it, just put your cursor over it and a handy dandy player thing will appear and you can enjoy it simply.  For example, Pol Plastino’s podcast, the Polcast.

Try it out: Polcast #46 :The Time Phone

Neat huh?

Speaking of Pol… the dude had his car towed!  SWA?  The story.

Tonight, I’ll see you at the Racoons show at Evo.  You know its special because Coral and I have Nana looking after Mads.

Saturday is Coral’s BIRTHDAY!  Holy moly.  And we’ll be celebrating by hitting the High School Music on Ice… THEN on Sunday, come join me at the Clubhouse for Super Bowl.

Right, go with yourself.

Hey, Jeremy.
Do you still play music from South Africa? My name’s Rowan Stuart & I’m a
South African solo artist. My album’s more alternative pop than rock, but
definitely worth a listen, if I may say so! I’d be happy to send you a CD
if you think your station might be interested. Otherwise, I’ll leave some
links to check out my music, in case you wanna.

Thanks a lot!

An email from Dave between him and another Zoner behind the lore of USS’s new track, “Laces Out.”

Hey Dave,

A quick regarding USS “Laces Out” and the potential Ace Ventura.  You are right on the money.  Here’s the specific remarks from their manager when I asked:
“Yes – that’s where it’s from.  When USS performs the single live, Jay usually asks the crowd if they know which way the laces should go according to Ace Ventura – of course they yell “out” and then Jay gets into a call and response with the crowd with him yelling “laces” and the crowd shouts back out” – now they’re ready to play the song!”
Awesome!
All the best,
Oscar

Coral and I decided long before Madelyn was even born that she would be a music snob when as she is growing up.

Teacher:  “Alright class, time to do a sing-a-long.”  How about Ba Ba Black Sheep.”

Madelyn:  “swa, That song sucks.  Just stab me in the ear, that would be easier than listening to this pedestrian shit.”

Keeping with Madelyn’s educational goals, Sara P found this wonderous product.  And hey!  Madelyn has a birthday coming up…
