I want to interview Corey Hart sometime… see what this classic Canadian icon is up to.  I read on the internet he has like 4 kids and lives in the Bahamas writing music for Celine Dion.  Well done sir.

I posted a write-up about the mixtape I made for Coral on our 1st Wedding Anniversary on my Victoria Wedding DJ website if you care to check it out. Actually please do click the link as I think it’ll help my Google searchnessisms for “Victoria Wedding DJ.”

It began as a simple internet search last week… and ended with me dropping $20 on itunes.

What was the first rock and roll song?

Fucking science man… they don’t have a definitive answer, but wikipedia comes darn close.

Now that is a good read for a music nerd like me. I ended up downloading a bunch of the suggestions from the list and thought I’d share them with you while also practicing to use my garageband (I hate this program, but its what I got).

Thank you for taking the time to jam out some olden tyme music with me. Hope you dig it.

Jettisoning off to Tofino this weekend won’t work for Coral and I… but we wanted to take a little adventure somewhere and now we’re thinking of the west coast Island outpost of Bamfield.

Bamfield is named after the gentleman Banfield.

I don’t know if this is racist or encouraging, but the story goes that the native population had a hard time pronouncing the ‘N’ and so it became Bamfield.  That or the post office made a typo in 1902 and no one gave enough of a shit to correct, and so Bamfield it is.  A typo clinging to the shores of British Columbia.

When I spoke of making the overland to Bamfield, many folks spoke out to inquire if I had the ability to navigate the back roads to this fishing/tourist/educational metropolis.

Yes I do.

It may not seem it as well, most my life is a comical bumbling of happy accidents but me and my co-pilot in adventure Coral, have a track record of success in this field.

Many moons ago, we did seek out and find the fabled Nitinat Lake.

A similar drive through the rain forest over logging roads… but all the signs pointed to Bamfield and few pointed to the lake.  We found the lake! The village should be easier to track down in the wild (it doesn’t move about right?).

When we get to Bamfield, I am not too sure the plan.  It had a population of only 251 (ish)… so like it might have a Wal-Mart but I am not expecting to find a Red Lobster.  I think they have a coffee shop? and maybe a restaurant?

Monday looks like rain!  The best!

How long has it been since we’ve heard from Ash and the Human Kabab?  March of 2010 by their reckoning.

Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker will be unleashing a new album on the huddled masses soon… and to wet your pallet for new USS, they have sent me a song to post right here on ye ‘ole blog.

Right now, the only other place to hear “Mavericks” is by signing up for their mailing list.  OR on October 11th you could hop scotch to their website and download it.

But why wait? download>> USS – “Mavericks” (mp3)

STREAM IT from The Zone dot FM RIGHT NOW

The song features some mean fiddle from Ashley MacIssac. fer realz.

The Human Kabob has nice breakdown in the middle about Maverick losing something to Jeff Clark?  I dunno, I can’t seem to figure it out.

Ash is channeling his best Seattle grunge rocker circa 1991.  This is for sure one of the more aggressive USS cuts that I have heard.

Hope you like it.  You thoughts? Leave a comment.

Tom Linton of Arizona rockers Jimmy Eat World took some time to talk with me on the radio.

I am a bit of a fanboy in this bit… but I ain’t apologizing. I love Jimmy Eat World!

We talk about getting dropped from their label many moons ago; the cutie on the album cover of ‘Invention;’ the style of the new record; the first single “My Best Theory;” the holdover songs from ‘Chase This Light’ that made it on ‘Invention;’ and finally touring. The whole time I’m gushing like a 14 year old girl. Good times indeed.

Thank you for taking the time to listen.

Man, I have the major cranks today.  I am crabby McCrabberson right now.  I’ll need a few sips of Sea Cider to get back into the normally happy spirit I carry around.

I think it has something to do with waking up at 6AM for bootcamp.  Bootcamp was fun… its the waking up at 6AM that is less than fun.  I haven’t had a proper exercise and Bootcamp leader Karla taught me a lot.

Like did you know, under that belly fat there are muscles?  I know right!  And not just one or two, but like a whole bunch.  Anyways, I met a bunch of them this morning on the wet grass of Clover Point.

It’s looking like my idea to jet off to Tofino for a quick weekend might not happen.  We’ll still go, but maybe not till after Christmas.  Coral and I are trying to horde our treasure and build back up our savings account.  A trip to Tofino will either raid our reserve or go on credit, and neither is wise or prudent.

Speaking of wise and prudent… we did buy hockey tickets!  Huzzah.

We’ll head off to Vancouver on December 26th to see the Nucks and Oil.  Oh course we’ll be travelling with our hockey friends David Eleanor and Lindsay.  plus this year the Fallon Gong and Alyx are coming.  It’ll be a party. I am always excited to see a Canucks games as they are my team to cheer for.  But I love going to see the Oil as I have a soft spot for that Club and its Dave’s team.  So we wear our jersey’s and trash talk and drink the night away.

OK, French Onion Soup is in the oven and beeping.

Its criminal.  I haven’t taken the Highway #4 to its terminus since the summer of 2003.

I first moved to Victoria that summer and like any recent immigrant I was a combination of excited for my new community and broke.

My brother CJ and sister Andrea borrowed Mom and Dad’s mini-van.  Loaded it up with my girlfriend and Andrea’s friend Candice and off to Tofino we went.

We didn’t have much of a plan.  A van full of kids and camping gear.  Beer.

When we arrived in Tofino, the first camp ground took a look us and just said, “no.”

wow, friendly folks.

We drove around for awhile and it was getting dark.  We found a camp ground that would have us and quickly fired up our tents and tarps.  I mean it was July, the rains was about to come.  My brother CJ got a fire going and we put on some over priced steaks and veggie kabobs from the Tofino Co-Op.

Beers.

Rain.

So.much.rain.

My brother and I stayed up till late.  I was sitting in a puddle.  Probably not piss. I hope. No it was cold. It was rain water.

The next day, all bleary eyed, I awoke to plane engine noise.  Our campground was beside the airport.  And by airport I mean strip of grass carved out of the rain forest.

We decided we wanted to surf, so into town we went to rent all the gear.

Like I said, it was July so obviously it was gray and misty and fucking cold.

Surfing was hard and brutal and I am not sure,  but someone likely drowned.

It wasn’t beach time like you might expect at Willows.  The beach was gorgeous and wild… and cold.

We went in to town for food, but everything was really expensive so we ate diner grub and headed back to camp.

The next day, we took that scary, twisting #4 back to the city.  And that was Tofino for me.

I did enjoy it… but I’ve never had an excuse to go back till now.

Coral has never been.

Now I gotta go back!

But this time, hotel and maybe I’ll leave the surfing off the itinerary.  Maybe I’ll watch surfing, but I’m not getting in the water.  OK, maybe I’ll get in the water.

If you are a Tofino person or have a great recommendation of an affordable place to stay for me and Coral, please leave a comment.

Nostalgia. The yearning for the past… a popular theme with many of my favourite 90s and early Oughts rockers.

We all get old, and we all start thinking about the olden days.  The beer was colder and cheaper.  The days longer. The breasts were all firmer.  The good ole’days.

I have noticed with so many records right now, songs that try to go back and capture old emotions or ideas.

Jimmy Eat World‘s 7th studio record, Invented, is full of nostalgia.  One of my favourite songs on the new record is “Coffee and Cigarettes.”  JEW is not the first band to sing about these two vices that make your breath stink and (could) kill you… but they have mined the territory again in search of youth.

Its hard to write a critical review of Jimmy Eat World’s music for me, because I generally love all their music.  I think ion the pantheon of all their records… so far I’d give this record a pass.  With repeat listens, it might end up being a fave.

I remember in 2007 when Chase This Light came out.  At first I wasn’t into it… but given time, I lean on that record before I’ll punch up Futures or Bleed American.

I thought this was neat.  As I trolled my JEW music on the laptop… all their recent record have a title track.  For example, in Invented, there is a song called “Invented.”  Chase this Light has a song called “Chase This Light.”

But their first two record, Jimmy Eat World and Static Prevails… no such song.

During my first listen today, while waiting for Mads to get out of Step Up To Pre-School, the three songs I gravitated to right away were the three I have heard the most.

People always say to me, “why do radio stations keep playing the same songs over?”

Because people like the songs they know.  I am aware of the science behind it… and still it works on me.  I enjoyed the radio single, “My Best Theory,” Chase This Light second chancer “Stop” and “Movielike.”  I had been jamming those songs out on repeat for awhile when I found them online.

Lots of romance on this record, I also really liked “Littlething.”

If you’re a Jimmy Eat World fan, there should be something you can grab onto right away and I think enough depth to give you satisfaction with repeat listens.

PS >> I’ve had impure thoughts about the model on the cover of the record.

ZAS >> Bowhunter

I went to Shoppers Drugmart in Esquimalt last night to buy some medicine for my little sick monkey (or Baby Sick Money as I call her). I thought, “hmm, maybe I want a magazine?”

I perused the magazine racks past all the thousands of wedding magazines, Cosmo, Home Decor and I spy… Bow Hunter.

Wow. I get that people are into hunting with a bow… but are there enough Bow Hunters in Esquimalt that it needs a whole magazine? Is it that mainstream that I will find my Bowhunter right beside my Rolling Stone, People, and National Geographic?
