DJ Notes

01) CFC – “City Drift”
02) Rabbit – “Waiting for The War”
03) Moss Rock – “Filthy”
04) Purple Grimus – “Please Me”

Not the first time I’ve featured the Crap Fartus Crew on podcast.  JP Maurice is a multi-instrumentalist with the CFC and I recently (well not THAT recently I guess) had a chance to the CFC and every time these guys, they get so much better.  They made a music video for the song I played, “City Drift.”

Rabbit are some great guys.  I seem to chat with them on twitter all the time.  You can see Rabbit live this Thursday at Evo.  In fact, The Zone’s Back To School Party Bus might pay them a visit this Thursday!

Some new bands for me, Moss Rock and Purple Grimus are also playing this Thursday at The V Lounge.

That’s all I got for this week.  next week I have a great singer/songwriter cat named Jason Walsh to play for you.  Some more Steph Macpherson, likely some  more Laundronauts and Acres of Lions.

Go with yourself.

DJ Notes

01) The O’Darling – “Venture Song”
02) Steph MacPherson – “Best of Us”
03) Forestry – “Owls”
04) The Laudronauts – “Stain”

The podcast starts with a fantastic song serving as my intro music/bed from Edmonton artist The Artisan Loyalist.

Aiden Knight is performing this Friday as part of Rifflandia at the Alix Goolden Hall.  I hope I don’t this story too wrong, but my understanding is that he will be playing with The O’Darling from the center of the Universe, Canada, Toronto.

I thought the O’Darling have a very pretty sound.

Steph Macpherson has been working on her new music from quite sometime.  I know this because I’ve been bugging her to send me music for what seems like an entirety.  It obviously is not an eternity, that would be a long time… but it was awhile.  Worth the wait?  You bet, she sent me four songs in total and a couple truly stood out.  I played one of my faves this week, “Best of Us.”  Take the time to have a listen and make you’re own judgment.  Reminds me a bit of Sarah Harmer.  If I had any critique, its the songs are too short!  I want more Steph… Gawd, I am a demanding  radio talker eh?  I get the songs for free and its not enough.

A gentleman named Peter Gardener turned me on to his new project Forestry.  He warned me the band is still in its infancy but I enjoyed the style.  Lo-fi indie pop done well.  I played “Owl” which I found to be the more interesting of the two cuts sent over.  Reminded me of another song but I can’t place it, so maybe that is its strength?… it reminds you of things you like.

The show ends with a chit chat with Gareth and Stephen from The Laundronauts.  We know and love the Laundronauts as that band that still presses their find music on vinyl.  For their new album they took it to level 17.  They traveled to Detroit Rock City to record in an analog studio with some famous mucky muck.  Then they went about pressing their full length ‘Come Clean’ on white vinyl!  Who does that anymore.  This week I played their feature song “Stain.”  They are working on a music video which is coming soon and I’ll be sure to post on my blog when its done.   There are more than a few songs I love off the record (and its just plain fun firing up the record player in the Capital Rock City studio) so you’ll be hearing more off their LP in the coming weeks.

the boys say its funny.  When they are at show they will have the CD master for $12 and the LP on vinyl right beside it for $15 and when someone comes up to buy the music and they see to the two products side-by-side, they almost always spring for the vinyl LP.  Better value.

That’s all I got for you today.  Thank you for downloading the show.  If you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoy making it, please share the link with a friend and help spread the word.

Talk at you next week.

Go with yourself.

Funny story, I am out at The Station House pub on a Friday night.  Meet a couple rad Zoners and we get to talking about the “podcast where I lay down some sick beats.”  Oh Capital Rock City?

That’s the one.  The one guy tells me he downloaded it once and loved the music bed I used… OK, nice and the other guys says he follows it every week… but has never heard it!  He reads about it from my blog, Facebook, The Zone dot FM.

I wonder, are there others out there that follow Capital Rock City from the blog/facebook but don’t actually download the show?  Hey!  You’re the guy I need the MOST to take the next step in our relationship, I’m ready, you’re ready, let’s take this to second base and actually download Capital Rock City.

Slide your hand inside the bra of radio and download: Capital Rock City #72

And since we’re both feeling really sexy tonight, maybe you’ll consider subscribing using this handy dandy RSS feed or searching ‘Capital Rock City’ on iTunes and having the podcast delivered to your computer every week.

01) The Paper Cranes – “Telephone”
02) Dan Kosub – “Blue and Gray”
03) Said the Whale – “Camilo (The Magician)”
04) We Are Seven – “Soul Fever”

Right, so this week I was supposed to have Saul on the show… pushed them back to next week.  This week I start by saying “Said the Wheel” instead of “Said the Whale.”  Ha, I talk for a living.

Miranda of The Paper Cranes comes on CRC 72 chit-chatting about the BREAKING NEWS that the pride of Esquimalt will now be a duo.  whoa.

Uh oh, I have to fire another fact checker here at Capital Rock City.  I asked for bands on Facebook and Jessica McCool sent me a link to one of her faves.  I assumed the dude was from Vic (or maybe Van or something) and included his music, which I thought was pretty good.  Turns out the man is from Toronto!  Zoinks, not very 100 mile audio diet of me.  My bad.  Talented song writer, very cordial in the emails we exchanged, so whatever.  Free song on a podcast.

* fun fact * Jessica McCool used to be a weekend announcer on The Zone circa… hmmm, 2003?  2004?

*UPDATES*

Daniel Kosub

by the by, I am actually from Victoria. I just live in Toronto at the moment.

Said the Whale are great stuff…we did a show in the Sault! All the great West Coast music is making it really tempting for me to move back west.

Tyler from Said the Whale came on the show to talk about the character in his song “Camilo.”  He is a real dude and he performs magic card tricks at parties.

Look for Said the Whale in Victoria on September 24th playing in Element as part of the Rifflandia Festival.

We call CRC 72 a podcast with an acoustic ditty from We Are Seven.  cool band name, based on an olden days poem.

***

that’s all I got… oh, you know that band The Dudes?  Yeah check out their song “Connected.” They do a shout out to Victoria!  True story.

“I’ve been alive/2005 Victoria/I laid a lot of high fives”

I remember that!  The guys have always had a special place in their heart(s) for our Island city because they do some of their biggest crowds outside of Calgary here.  They too will be part of Rifflandia.  A Zoner called into the show letting me know about that.  thank you mystery Zoner person.

That’s all I got.  If you like the podcast or think maybe someone you know might, please share the link with a friend and I’ll talk at you next week.

01) Saul – “Its Never Enough”
02) Hollydene – “Friday, I’m In Love”
03) Sunday Buckets – “Man in the Moon”
04) Day In The Life – “Where’s Your Imagination”

OK Saul fans, is it time that David got that second armed all tattoo’d up or what?

In 1992, The Cure released their 9th studio album, Wish.  One of their most endearing singles from that album was a track called “Friday I’m In Love.”  Hollydene covered it.

Last Saturday, I went to a hall party at the James Bay Rugby Club.  All the fine lovelies running around the party had the Sunday Bucket’s album blaring.  Great album.  The song I chose this week for CRC is one of their slower cuts, but it stood out for me when I placed the record on while getting ready for my radio show the other day.

The final track from this week’s Capital Rock City comes a band I think is a Jesus Rock Band?  They have that Christian vibe about them, the song I played on Capital Rock City is about not trying to figure stuff out… and having faith.  Sure, whatever helps you sleep.  DITL sent me a music video for this song.  Very DIY.  The band gets top marks for tenacity, but if rock stardom or heck… even heavy play on Christian radio is their goal, then they’ll want to think about putting more effort (or hiring someone) to record and edit their videos and music.  Coupled with the fact that I wanted to find their website to link for you and couldn’t.  or find the video on youtube for you to enjoy and couldn’t means…  I dunno… that is just weird.  Change the band name to something more unique?  Get your friends to hit your sites more so it pushes up on the google machine?

Final verdict on DITL, rough around the edges…

oh, found the video.

That’s all I got.  Off on a little vacation next week so CRC 71 will be a day or two late.  Thank you for downloading the show and taking a minute or two to read my ramblings.

Go with yourself.

DJ Notes:

01) Saul – “Wasteland Anthem”
02) The Paper Cranes – “The Cavalier
03) Lizzie and Simon – “Mermaids and Kings”
04) Cage The Elephant – “Back Against The Wall (live)”

The more I listen to Saul’s latest work, the more I am impressed by the chunky fullness of the sounds.  I do have a soft spot in my heart for riff-rock (I grew up in the suburbs of Vancouver jamming out CFOX) and this music kinda reminds me of Chevelle.  I don’t know what will propel Saul to an opening slot of a Hinder concert, being a “rock” band can be a hard row to sow with a song about cheating on your girlfriend or drugs (of hopefully both).  I am not sure if I’ve heard that break-out single from Saul yet… but maybe after a couple more listens.  A few weeks back I jammed out a track called “Never Enough” and that song had a nice hook, so maybe I’ll need to revisit that cut or maybe a couple cuts for CRC #70.  If you have some thoughts, I’d always love to hear them, in the comment section of my blog (or http://www.thezone.fm/jeremy readers can email me jeremy@thezone.fm).

I have a minor obsession with the CBC show The Tudors.  I just discovered the program recently, and outside of the news and hockey, its the only reason I visit the Ceeb these days.  The King in The Tudors is such a dick, but all the lady’s of the court are smoking hot, so I can see why the dude was always fucking anything in a dress and not managing his realm very effectively.

This attitude would eventually… well a century later, boil over to the First English Civil War. Supporters of the then King Charles would be called cavaliers.  A cavalier is either, depending on which end of the pike you were standing, bold, dashing, religious, loyal, Calvary men of the King or… godless, drinking, frivolous men. I’ll need to have another listen to the Paper Cranes cut to hear who Ryan is singing about.  I did like the prayer of one Cavalier before battle: “O Lord, Thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget Thee, do not forget me.”

Liz Beattie sent me a track to feature on my podcast this week, “Mermaids and Kings.”  its alright, I like “Wherever You Go” from last week’s show so much better.

The show ends with a clip from chit-chat/live performance with Cage The Elephant.  The song they played is called “Back Against The Wall.”

That’s all I got, thank you for downloading my podcast and please take a moment to find it in iTunes music store.  You could rate it (highly I hope) leave a comment, subscribe to it… sure.  And if you liked the show, maybe you’ll tell a friend about it.

DJ Notes

01) Funk Vigilante – “On Top of the World”
02) Goodbye Beatdown – “Feel Your Pain”
03) Lizzie and Simon – “Wherever You Go”
04) Black Hat Villain – “Rain or Shine”

Funk Vigilante reminds me of my old vigilante hat.  Many moons ago when I was snot-nosed suburban hipster, I went to the Warped Tour in Vancouver.  During the show I found this trucker hat (remember when those were so hawt!) that had the top cut off so it looked like a real D-bag styled golf vizer thing.  Written in sharpy marker was the word “vigilante.”  Cool.

Funk Vigilante describes themselves as:

The album is called “Civil Disobedience”  it’s like one of those hot lava burritos, blended up, and poured right into your listening hole.

which is much better than anything I could write.

The Goodbye Beatdown are a Vancouver band that is increasingly spending more and more time visiting us here in Victoria.  They’ll once again be here for a show on August 20th at Lucky Bar.

Liz Beattie was (maybe still is?) the bass player for Machina.  Remember that band?  Lately I notice she performs as The Liz Beattie band or on MySpace as Lizzie and Simon.  Simon is the keyboard player for Maurice and together they make some pretty indie pop.  Cute attack!

I end the show this week with Langfordians, Black Hat Villain.  You’ll get a chance to experience their post-grungy sounds live at The Station House Pub on Saturday, August 15th when they suppoert the Armchair Cynics.

Thank you for trying something new with your music and discovering some great Victoria rock & roll.

Thank you for finding this week’s Capital Rock City.

Today, its real easy… a sit down and chit-chat with Current Swell and then they perform some songs live.  Basically I took the live broadcast from Thursday, July 30 and replayed it here.  Enjoy.

Download: Capital Rock City #67

And remember friends and lovers, if you like the show please consider subscribing on iTunes or with this fine RSS Feed.  if you best enjoy your radio experience on the MP3 player, you might really like Pol Plastino’s Polcast!  This week he has an outstanding call with a Zoner that tries to make the case for texting while driving.  It makes her a better driver!  You got hear it to believe it!

01) Current Swell – “Nail ’em Up (live)”
02) Current Swell – “Red Shag Carpet”
03) Current Swell – “Mr. Golden Sun (live)”

How cool is this, their first song is based on the film ‘Black Snake Moan.’

“Red Shag Carpet” is a song that began life as a bumper sticker the boys saw while driving around.  That needed to be a song!

Lastly, a real treat on CRC, “Mr. Golden Sun” is a song they have never recorded.  They are thinking of maybe laying down on the next record, but you get it first on this here podcast (well second, if you listened ot my show last week, you got it first).”

Thank you for finding my podcast, if you like the show, don’t be shy and share the link with a friend or on your social network. Next week I am already looking forward to some new music from the Goodbye Beatdown and I might track down some music from bands taking part in the Big Time Out Festival and Sunfest?  sure.

Go with yourself.

Please do the right thing, download: Capital Rock City #66

This crazy fun summertime is doing a number on my blog hits which I can only imagine is damaging my March to 1,000 weekly CRC downloads… that said, if you are one of the fine few finding this website when really you should be at the beach, thank you and maybe take a second to subscribe to the podcast on either iTunes or by RSS feed.

DJ Notes

01) The Paper Cranes – “Chivalry’s Dead”
02) Japandroids – “Crazy/Forever”
03) Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band – “Albatross, Albatross, Albatross”
04) Current Swell – “Red Shag Carpet”

No better way to get right to it, then to go to Paper Cranes female half, Miranda’s blog:

The gist of it: our label Unfamiliar Records has called out Factor for giving grant money to only successful bands who don’t “need” it. Large amounts of money going to groups like Nickleback and Metric.
While I agree with the sentiment and have been frustratingly rejected for multiple video and recording grants (written by professionals) we have also been approved for and relied on a couple travel grants in the past to play festivals.

I am a little worried that we will now never be able to get a grant as a result of this. It is pretty entertaining though…..

The letter has been picked up by thedailyswarm, exclaim news and the national post.

the national post
the original letter
response from metric’s manager

oh the dramz. i hope we have not been fully alienated.

I hope not either Miranda!  But I wouldn’t worry about it too much.  Grants are free money, if you get one, score, if not… then you do like countless others and work for yours.  Ryan and you are hard workers that make great music.

Huzzah!  Japandroids are making up the canceled show in Victoria. This mighty Vancouver fuzz rock group is playing Lucky Bar on Saturday, September 5th.  And they’re bringing with them, Seattle group the Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band.  I had a chance to see these guys (I think) at Sasquatch!

Finally on this weeks CRC, Zone Band of the Month, Current Swell.  Some fine summer music that is perfect for the patio.  CS is a great example of a band that makes music people like and work hard showing it.  These guys don’t really “need” a band of the month showcase, but we’re happy non-the-less here at the Zone for the chance to share their fantastic music with our audience.  The showcase tomorrow (July 30th) at Evolution Nightclub promises to be packed!  So make sure you meet up with Pol early at 9PM.

That will do it for this week…. thank you for downloading my podcast and I hope you discovered some great new music.

Go with yourself.

Back from my rip-roaring holiday in Edmonton and the first thing I did when I rolled into the radio was watch this fine Nirvana Mash-up.  But then the second thing I did, was hop in the Capital Rock City studio to jam out this week’s CRC.

I hope you enjoy the show as much as I loved making it.  If you like the program, please share the link with a friend or on your social network.  Every link counts on my march to 1,000 weekly downloads.  Thank you.

DJ Notes

01) Vince Vaccaro – “Costa Rica”
02) Vince Vaccaro – “Heart and Hands”
03) Maurice – “Anticipation”
04) Maurice – “Unattainable”

Wow, if you remember last week, I was thinking out loud about the possibility of seeing Vince and Maurice on tour in Edmonton, well the stars aligned and on Friday night, I journeyed out to downtown Edmonton (1,300 km from downtown Victoria) with Coral, Alyx, Dave and Lacey to experience some fine Captial Rock in… uhhh… another Provincial Capital.

The venue was this hot, sweaty basement called Brixx Bar.  The room was downtown on some numbered street (they all look the same to me) just off Jasper under the Starlight Room.

We walked in and Coral and I wanted to fire this night up right so we ordered two three (one for Alyx) double Gin and Tonics.  $33!  SWA?  Edmonton what’s up?  Okay, one round later and I was on to their finest, cheapest beer… Lucky.

I was watching two fine Victoria rockers drinking Lucky Beer in… Edmonton.

Maurice and Vince were tired.  They had played Calgary the night before, bee-lined it north to Deadmonton, slept an hour or two then did Breakfast TV on CITY.  Slept a few more hours then had sound check at Brixx, oh the life of a touring working band.

The boys treated me like a star, told some stories, drank some beers and then Maurice tucked into their set.

As always, Maurice translates so much better live than on record.  The rock songs rock harder and far more furiously and the ballads are more passionate and desperate.  On record, sometimes I find their songs get lost in the production.  Coral was sold after their set and needed a t-shirt! Post Script, Coral sent me an email today:

And HEY! Your blog made it sound like Id never heard Maurice before “coral was sold after their set and bought a tshirt’

How about coral swooned. I was sold befooooore!
Being the long time Maurice admirer that I am, I was sad they did not play “High School Sweetheart.”  Maybe they were drunk, I know I was… but I am pretty sure promises were made to record that song for Capital Rock City??? maybe??? Maybe JP?

Vince did his thing after, using most the boy in Maurice as his backing band.  A very efficient way to do it.  Too bad more people in Edmonton don’t go out on a Friday night, it was a sparse crowd.  Any touring band might want to think about some more local support.  They had some group open, then the touring acts headlined… next time, have a local open and one close the night out.

I grabbed a copy of Maurice’s ‘Young People With Faces’ and Vince’s s/t LP, the girls got t-shirts and it was off to enjoy the rest of our holiday… which included lots of driving.

Maurice’s record stayed in the player lots.  “Anticipation” rose to the top for Coral and I.  Another song that peaked my interest was the final song of the podcast, “Unattainable.”  JP sings about Fernwood! and existentialism?  ahhh, you had me at Fernwood.

Thank you for downloading this week’s show!  Tell a friend about it.

Go with yourself.

Download and Share: Capital Rock City #64

Thank you for taking the time to find out the fine music of Victoria.  If you like the show please share this link with a friend.

DJ Notes:

01) Said the Whale – “Camilo (The Magician)”
02) A Trophy Life – “Conversation Sucks”
03) Maurice – “Kerosene”
04) Franco – “Forever”

I knew the leader of Said the Whale way back in the olden days when he was just a 15 year old ponker kid in a band called My Buddy Dave.  Today, Tyler is an ex-UVic’er jamming out his new band based out of Vancouver called Said The Whale.  The band is starting to get some love and radio play.  You might hear Said the Whale on the Modern Rock Inbox with David Eleanor, or on The Peak in Vancouver.  Good times.

A Trophy Life commutes between Victoria and Vancouver.  Their song “Conversation Sucks” is from the new EP called “Go On Tour” ep.  “Conversation Sucks”  is titled after the former Zone Band of the Month Conversation.  The title is just a tongue in cheek reference, the bands are friends.  Tim of Conversation sings and plays keys/samples for A Trophy Life.

Former ZBOTM Maurice needs a trophy for their creative album title, ‘Young People With Faces.’  Don’t we all have faces?  Profound.

Maurice is on tour playing all sorts of groovy cities.

3 Aug 2009 12:00
St Anne’s Academy (Outdoors) Victoria, British Columbia

Hang on a second, I’ll be in Edmonton the day Maurice is in own… should I go see Victoria bands in Edmonton?

Finally, a song from yet another former ZBOTM, Franco.  Franco used the Spinal Tap thing for their ep title, ‘This Is Franco.’  The song I featured, “Forever” was selected by the CBC Radio’s BC Almanac as a theme song.  How cultured of them.

Thank you for downloading the show, I hope you love it (or at least enjoy it) and share the link for the podcast on your blog or with your friends.

Go with yourself.
