The boys of Saul came by the Capital Rock City studio on Quadra Street to chit chat about their album ‘All Gods to the Front.’ We fondly remember The Moffatts, talk about full arm sleeve tattoos, recording in a warehouse, going on tour, adding crowd SFX to recorded tracks and play some of Saul’s fave local Vic rockers, Funk Vigilante and Reaver.

Funny story, I am out at The Station House pub on a Friday night. Meet a couple rad Zoners and we get to talking about the “podcast where I lay down some sick beats.” Oh Capital Rock City?
That’s the one. The one guy tells me he downloaded it once and loved the music bed I used… OK, nice and the other guys says he follows it every week… but has never heard it! He reads about it from my blog, Facebook, The Zone dot FM.
I wonder, are there others out there that follow Capital Rock City from the blog/facebook but don’t actually download the show? Hey! You’re the guy I need the MOST to take the next step in our relationship, I’m ready, you’re ready, let’s take this to second base and actually download Capital Rock City.

Uh oh, I have to fire another fact checker here at Capital Rock City. I asked for bands on Facebook and Jessica McCool sent me a link to one of her faves. I assumed the dude was from Vic (or maybe Van or something) and included his music, which I thought was pretty good. Turns out the man is from Toronto! Zoinks, not very 100 mile audio diet of me. My bad. Talented song writer, very cordial in the emails we exchanged, so whatever. Free song on a podcast.

Said the Whale are great stuff…we did a show in the Sault! All the great West Coast music is making it really tempting for me to move back west.

Tyler from Said the Whale came on the show to talk about the character in his song “Camilo.” He is a real dude and he performs magic card tricks at parties.
Look for Said the Whale in Victoria on September 24th playing in Element as part of the Rifflandia Festival.
We call CRC 72 a podcast with an acoustic ditty from We Are Seven. cool band name, based on an olden days poem.

I remember that! The guys have always had a special place in their heart(s) for our Island city because they do some of their biggest crowds outside of Calgary here. They too will be part of Rifflandia. A Zoner called into the show letting me know about that. thank you mystery Zoner person.

A day late a buck short… I’m writing the report… oh wow, Blink 182? really?
Capital Rock City #71 is a couple days late, and I apologize to you passionate CRCers out there who wait breathlessly each and every week for your fix of some fine BC rock & roll. Corj and I took Mads on a trip of the interior, then yesterday was just way too busy and I was sick and blah blah blah… yeah.
Today is the day, and I thank you for finding Capital Rock City and downloading the show.
Vince Vaccaro crafted a video for an alternate recording of one my favourite VV cuts, “Costa Rica.” Whenever I play this song for someone they become a Vince fan. Both my sister and Coral love the song. The video is an excellent DIY creation and well worth about 3 minutes of your time.
The only thing Vince… I noticed a shot of Vancouver radio station The Peak 100.5, but no clips of The Zone? next video I’m sure.
Our September Band of the Month ’round these parts is a group called A Trophy Life. You can hit the Band of the Month PAGE on THEZONEDOTFM and download some songs for totally free man.
TV Heart Attack is a Vancouver band that I have featured on the show before. Peak (and former Zone) music director James Sutton turned me on to the group. They recently competed in the Peak’s Performance Project where they were a finalist.
TVHA’s new record is called Lost in the Sway and is available now at finer record stores or on iTunes.
On October 20th I will have been married for 9 days AND I’ll be able to get my paws on the brand spanking new Daniel Wesley record. Before taking off on holidays last week, Daniel came by the Zone and recorded a song called “Pilgrimage.”
The shows today starts with a fine taste of the group Holy Fuck. I love this group with features the dude from the band By Devine Right! remember them?
Holy Fuck is going to be in Victoria for the Rifflandia Festival and as luck would have it, they are playing on the only night I have free that weekend to hit a rock show! Rifflandia looks amazing this year and I wish I could check out more shows… I know a few Morning After Show readers would be interested in Sam Bradley… yup, he’s playing too all you R Pattinson fans.
Next week on CRC 72 I am hoping to have the boys of Saul in the studio. Steve of the band Rotterdam and his set of Vic metal for CRC 73 and then maybe Two and I will be ready for the special live acoustic CRC 74? maybe?

OK Saul fans, is it time that David got that second armed all tattoo’d up or what?
In 1992, The Cure released their 9th studio album, Wish. One of their most endearing singles from that album was a track called “Friday I’m In Love.” Hollydene covered it.
Last Saturday, I went to a hall party at the James Bay Rugby Club. All the fine lovelies running around the party had the Sunday Bucket’s album blaring. Great album. The song I chose this week for CRC is one of their slower cuts, but it stood out for me when I placed the record on while getting ready for my radio show the other day.
The final track from this week’s Capital Rock City comes a band I think is a Jesus Rock Band? They have that Christian vibe about them, the song I played on Capital Rock City is about not trying to figure stuff out… and having faith. Sure, whatever helps you sleep. DITL sent me a music video for this song. Very DIY. The band gets top marks for tenacity, but if rock stardom or heck… even heavy play on Christian radio is their goal, then they’ll want to think about putting more effort (or hiring someone) to record and edit their videos and music. Coupled with the fact that I wanted to find their website to link for you and couldn’t. or find the video on youtube for you to enjoy and couldn’t means… I dunno… that is just weird. Change the band name to something more unique? Get your friends to hit your sites more so it pushes up on the google machine?

The march to 1,000 weekly downloads of Capital Rock City continues with… uh, you downloading my podcast? But it really kicks into gear when you unleash the social media revolution and share my work with your friends and ex-boyfriends.
The more I listen to Saul’s latest work, the more I am impressed by the chunky fullness of the sounds. I do have a soft spot in my heart for riff-rock (I grew up in the suburbs of Vancouver jamming out CFOX) and this music kinda reminds me of Chevelle. I don’t know what will propel Saul to an opening slot of a Hinder concert, being a “rock” band can be a hard row to sow with a song about cheating on your girlfriend or drugs (of hopefully both). I am not sure if I’ve heard that break-out single from Saul yet… but maybe after a couple more listens. A few weeks back I jammed out a track called “Never Enough” and that song had a nice hook, so maybe I’ll need to revisit that cut or maybe a couple cuts for CRC #70. I have a minor obsession with the CBC show The Tudors. I just discovered the program recently, and outside of the news and hockey, its the only reason I visit the Ceeb these days. The King in The Tudors is such a dick, but all the lady’s of the court are smoking hot, so I can see why the dude was always fucking anything in a dress and not managing his realm very effectively.
This attitude would eventually… well a century later, boil over to the First English Civil War. Supporters of the then King Charles would be called cavaliers. A cavalier is either, depending on which end of the pike you were standing, bold, dashing, religious, loyal, Calvary men of the King or… godless, drinking, frivolous men. I’ll need to have another listen to the Paper Cranes cut to hear who Ryan is singing about. I did like the prayer of one Cavalier before battle: “O Lord, Thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget Thee, do not forget me.”
Liz Beattie sent me a track to feature on my podcast this week, “Mermaids and Kings.” its alright, I like “Wherever You Go” from last week’s show so much better.
The show ends with a clip from chit-chat/live performance with Cage The Elephant. The song they played is called “Back Against The Wall.”

I met the boys in Doc Currie last week at Logan’s opening for The CFC (not to be confused with the Couples for Christ). DC is just two just guys doing the drums and guitar thing. Lots of audio weirdness. Two was thinking they sounded like Modest Mouse, I disagreed and pulled some threads of Japanadroids out. But listening to “Eastern Shore” again on Capital Rock City… it is a little more noisy and experimental.

The good kids in Saul asked me a couple weeks ago if they could use a clip form the Zone Afternoon Show in an intro to a song on their new record. I said, “yuppers!” And now you’re hearing it on Capital Rock City. man, those were some good oranges. I still remember them. And to tie CRC 57 in to The Paper Cranes, Miranda went to Save-On and bought some oranges too.
The Racoons are on tour right now… Ontario maybe? They’ll be back in Victoria for a show at Sugar on June 12th. new ep, “Islomania” is out in Early June as well.
The “secret song” at the end of the “I’d Rather Be Sailing with” ep is a song that lead singer Matt describes as their “National sounding song.” The National are taking FOREVER to follow up Boxer, so the Racoons will have to scratch that itch for me.

Had a lot of fun crafting this weeks local rocker show for TheZone dot F-M. I had to wheel out the record player and even used the old Denon CD cart machine. My mic sounds off, I think someone came into the studio the other day and fiddled with the EQ. BWOAR Stupid gremlins! I didn’t catch it till after we were done, and this is the one take special, so it had to fly.

Matt from the Racoons was back in town visiting his Mom and sister Jane. Jane (and Alix) came over on the weekend and helped Corj and I sort out the bedroom and closet for some spring cleaning. She had in her hot little hand the new racoons EP. I had to have one. So I asked Matt on his way to the 3PM ferry to hop into the Capital Rock City studio.
We talk about nerdy music stuff, The national and how great they are AND it is committed to tape, Matt said he’d perform at Coral and my wedding.
oh, and it turns out I was sharing emails with Dave from Saul. Dave from the band emailed me needing some radio jibber jabber for a song on their upcoming album. Fun. So you’ll hear a wee taste of the Zone Afternoon Show on the new Saul when it comes out.

She has a new band and I’d love to invite her down when they have a demo to share. Word on the street is that Jets Overhead have a new record out in the Spring too!
Still hammering By A Thread for an interview and my lead on Chixdiggit ran cold.. sadness. What else? Maybe some more music from Edmonton? Adam Thompson might make a future appearanc on the show with a group called The Faunts and I have been talking to Lindsay in Winnipeg about a contribution from her, so we’ll see.
