I am going to start with a couple emails today, my man Geoff talking about yesterday’s post about some bands I am jiving on including The xx:

“I like the xx disc but I know a few people who won’t even give it a listen because of the whole pitchforkmedia thing. pitchfork giveth and it taketh away.”

I thought that was a neat thought.  Its almost as if Pitchfork is becoming is a parody of itself.

I replied:

its as if them liking something is the kiss of death for a band. But I don’t care, generally if they really like something, there is something there to like. And even the records they pan, they generally write in a way that can still intrigue me. I remember when Silversun Pickups came out and Pitchfork gave it a “meh” review, they did it in a way that I read it and went, “you know, that might be something I like!”

Some feedback from a Zoner named Megan in regards to this week’s contest to win Stone Temple Pilots concert tickets…. which doesn’t have a clever name.  uh oh, bad DJ am I.  Basically I unleash the power of the FM dial and encode a “secret” message on either the left or right channel.  you need to pan your stereo right or left to hear it.  Megan is into it except… MONO stereo!  ahhhhh

“Hey! I have to say, the Stone Temple Pilots ‘beat the box office’ contest is cool, with the secret code and everything. But, I listen to the zone everyday” at work on my headphones, and it doesn’t work on headphones!! I get both messages in both ears. So, I am at an unfair disadvantage, tho I am a huge and religiously loyal zone fan!! Just sayin!”

I hope she figures it out, because today… the code is extra, extra special!

Lastly a message from local Victoria manabouttown JP Maurice.  He is part of a hip hop crew? sure crew, called The CFC and they have a new video for their song “City Drift.”  Listen for “City Drift” next week on Capital Rock City with songs from Purple Grimus, Rabbit and likely more Laundronauts/Steph Macpherson/Forestry.  Whoa, so much good new local music to get at…

A day late a buck short… I’m writing the report… oh wow, Blink 182?  really?

Capital Rock City #71 is a couple days late, and I apologize to you passionate CRCers out there who wait breathlessly each and every week for your fix of some fine BC rock & roll.  Corj and I took Mads on a trip of the interior, then yesterday was just way too busy and I was sick and blah blah blah… yeah.

Today is the day, and I thank you for finding Capital Rock City and downloading the show.

Vince Vaccaro crafted a video for an alternate recording of one my favourite VV cuts, “Costa Rica.”  Whenever I play this song for someone they become a Vince fan.  Both my sister and Coral love the song.  The video is an excellent DIY creation and well worth about 3 minutes of your time.

The only thing Vince… I noticed a shot of Vancouver radio station The Peak 100.5, but no clips of The Zone?  next video I’m sure.

Our September Band of the Month ’round these parts is a group called A Trophy Life.  You can hit the Band of the Month PAGE on THEZONEDOTFM and download some songs for totally free man.

TV Heart Attack is a Vancouver band that I have featured on the show before.  Peak (and former Zone) music director James Sutton turned me on to the group.  They recently competed in the Peak’s Performance Project where they were a finalist.

TVHA’s new record is called Lost in the Sway and is available now at finer record stores or on iTunes.

On October 20th I will have been married for 9 days AND I’ll be able to get my paws on the brand spanking new Daniel Wesley record.  Before taking off on holidays last week, Daniel came by the Zone and recorded a song called “Pilgrimage.”

The shows today starts with a fine taste of the group Holy Fuck.  I love this group with features the dude from the band By Devine Right!  remember them?

Holy Fuck is going to be in Victoria for the Rifflandia Festival and as luck would have it, they are playing on the only night I have free that weekend to hit a rock show!  Rifflandia looks amazing this year and I wish I could check out more shows… I know a few Morning After Show readers would be interested in Sam Bradley… yup, he’s playing too all you R Pattinson fans.

Next week on CRC 72 I am hoping to have the boys of Saul in the studio.  Steve of the band Rotterdam and his set of Vic metal for CRC 73 and then maybe Two and I will be ready for the special live acoustic CRC 74?  maybe?

sun it will rise / soon enough

Coral and I got busy this weekend.  We have almost organized the homestead.  I went rooting through Madelyn’s closet and dug out the record player.  Just needed to find a home for it.  An adventerous trip out to Wal-Mart and we moved the TV off the mantle and onto a TV stand and now the record player has a home!

My record player is my old man’s that lived in our family home throughout most of the 80s and into the 90s.  It is a Hitachi Direct Drive Turntable HT-350.  I don’t know if that is a good record player or not, but it is the year 2009 and its still spinning 33s.  I had this old beast set up in my old Fernwood apartment.  The top is covered in wax from candles and there was a candle spill down one of my speakers.  The speakers are the newest part of the rig, my old man bought them for me as a present when I first moved out on my own or soon after.  The amp is an an ancient Kenwood KR-4600 from the 70s I bought at a flee market in Aldergrove (maybe ? or maybe Cloverdale) when I was living with Paul in the basement of that shithole in Burncouver.  Some guy had the bed of a pick-up truck full of old stereo equipment.  He sold me that Kenwood for $20.  He said, “kid, this Kenwood is older than you and it’ll work!”

These days, the amp has some connection problems when I fiddle with any of the knobs.  I might need to take my amp in for a tune up…and heck, the LP player could use a tune up too.  Alix was saying something about a store that sells juke-boxes out in Oak Bay or something where the guy can fix up and refurbish my archaic audiophile instrumentations.

I have an exciting week coming up.  I have a new project that is paying me a good living wage to do what I do best.  When it is finished and my client is satisfied I’ll be sure to share it here.  It might be a new business venture for me.  I am jazzed on the concept because it is a job that remains focused on my core values as a person.  It feels good to get paid and recognized for what you fundamentally do.  Plus I can continue to rock the Zone and live in Victoria!  Those are such massive benefits.  I might actually start a real-life business and pay taxes and get a website and everything!  as Madelyn would say, “OooOoOoH  wow Da-dy.”

on the non-profit front, I have two new podcast ideas to try and launch in conjunction with Capital Rock City.  Both are spoken word and of a more serious nature.  I doubt I have the energy for both but I think I will try a demo of both a see what I like more.

The first idea is a history podcast.  Tackling a story or idea of Vancouver Island history every week.  I like history and there isn’t a good history podcast on the iTunes store… maybe I can be the guy that makes it.

The other idea is a farming podcast.  I am working with a farming family on Madrona Farm in Saanich on some fundraisers to help save their farm from the pressures of development.  The family are real characters with an encyclopedic knowledge of organic and sustainable farming.  It would be a shame to not share their passion for your food with you!  It’ll change the way the way you think about your salad greens, that’s for sure.

That said, if the podcast doesn’t get off the ground, a mighty rock concert will.  Details for the concert will play out on this blog as they develop.  If you’re in a band and you want to take part, please don’t be shy and fire me an email.

My coffee is running low and its almost time to flip the Fleet Foxes record to the B-side so I’m out like trout.

Couple things went down for this weeks Capital Rock City.  Tuesday, The Clubhouse booked a big party of convention people.  Great for business, but I couldn’t record my first live-to-tape Capital Rock City with Acres of Lions.

It will still happen, but the first one will have to be with a different band?  Anyone want to volunteer?

Tyson said they’d be down to record one for me in April.

The other plan was to have Miranda and Ryan of the Paper Cranes on the show.  But on Monday (when I record the show) I ended up at the Victoria Film Festival.  Miranda and Ryan will be next week for CRC 42.

The film festival was very fun.  I saw 14 short films!  It is too bad that there is no place on this planet for easier consumption of this great art.  My favourite films I couldn’t even find websites for, let alone streamed on Youtube.  Hey film makers… if you make a film and want people to actually watch it, you have to distribute it.  (shakes head).

There used to be a TV show on the CBC called Zed.  Do you remember that show?  It must have been on TV around 2000?  I was living with Paul in Burncouver (or was it Vanaby?) and we smoked a lot of pot.  The show was basically a film fest every night.  Then it stopped.  WTF CBC… Stoners are Canadian tax payers too you know.  I like Strombo… but I’d have a nighty time explosion in my pants if my evening went Strombo at 11P then Zed at midnight… or who knows, maybe Zed is still on?  I can’t find it and have never seen an ad for it.  Anyways… the show was basically a collection of short films, animations,  and avant-garde music videos presented for an hour or two every night from mostly Canadian but also world film makers.

The only issue I had with the film fest is a personal one… I was tired and it was along night.  I went from The Zone directly to the film fest and sat on a hard chair for 4 hours.  Great films… but long night.  Like longer than Titanic!

During intermission I was hungry as shit.  So  I left to find some food, but in the end all I wanted was a coffee.

I wander back into the film fest and the lady taking tickets turns to me and says, “do you know where to get any food around here?  I am starving!  I had to rush from work to the film fest and I ate no dinner.”

“Me too!” I reply, “I just found this coffee.”

“Did you know coffee is an appetite suppressant?”

“No I did not.”  Then I related the story to her about the time time I ate an apple.

“one time when I was doing my show I said on the air that was very hungry and during the commercials I was going to eat an apple because I love apples.

“this lady phones my show and says to me, ‘Jeremy did you know that apples are appetite suppressants?’ and I said really?  when I am hungry and I eat some food my appetite is suppressed? who’d have thought of that?”
